Teenage kicks

946

So how do you feel about playing a couple of teenagers, Filip Twardzik and debutant Jackson Irvine, in central midfield, but dropping a couple of SPL points?  Good, I hope.  Welcome to the world of player development.

For a decade or more Celtic produced prodigious youth teams but watched as Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts even Hamilton Accies graduated more effective adult players.  Key to this is perhaps ensuring that players are tested at a higher level at key times in their development.  In short, if you have not played regular first team football by the time you are 22 there is a good chance you will not fulfil your potential.

There is cost to this development, you’re not going to win all the time, especially when the two teenage central midfielders are surrounded by other young players: Adam Matthews, 20, Tony Watt, 18 and James Forrest, 21.  Half time substitute, Victor Wanyama, is still only 21.

I’m looking forward to seeing more teenage kicks in the coming months.

Spot on…….we need to bring the youths on, and it will also allow us to rest the first team on a rota basis …… Every player has a part to ply, as do the …….Hail Hail

  2. Bent F.C. are takin’ the absolute ***** out of the sfl and the mgrs. in the sfl are none too happy about it. Methinks the bent lot are about to get ripped a new one regardless of how hard their fellow goat botherers try to keep them munching on fresh turf.

  5. Talking about teenagers.

I see Roy Hodgson has picked Butland for the England squad again while ignoring a keeper who is playing in the CL, and was widley praised by english pundits

    I hope they get humped.

  6. I am not a fan of Twardzik ,he is too namby pamby for me.

I also thought that Irvine panicked and looked overawed.

I am not righting off these players,

What they were asked to do yesterday, was way too much at this stage in their development.

They were surrounded by players with not much more experience than themselves.

The whole side was far too young.

Even Tony Watt lacked composure when his big chance in the match came.

To blood young players they should be surrounded by at least a couple of veteran older heads ,who can guide them through.

We did not have that yesterday.

If these bhoys need regular matches to develop at SPL level, then we should loan them out to other SPL clubs, who will play them with regularlty.

They can make the mistakes that most youngsters make at other clubs.

  7. This season is tailor made to develop the younger talent, if at season end we have just one new first choice player from our young lads it will have been worth winning the SPL by 20 points instead of 30.

  8. Lisb\o/nbhoy who thinks Neil Lenn('0')n is a legend on

5 of the squad (2 started ) from yesterdays game were part of last seasons next gen under 19 squad. With an Injury ravaged squad it was great to be able to use these great young players.

  10. ‘Teenage kicks’.

Brilliant song – one of my favourites.

As the season progresses I am sure that Neil will give more of the young players more game time – mainly in the SPL and the league cup.

These bhoys need to be nurtured carefully ‘though, and helped by their more experienced team mates. And no booing from certain ‘supporters’|

    HH!!

  11. Great news on Lassada, i’m really pleased with our new signings.

Like others i too am pleased to see the young bucks in the 1st team, all that was missing yesterday was clinical finishing in the 1st half and better defending in the 2nd.

That’ll be why we’ve brought in 2 strikers and a centre back never mind Stokes, Samaras, Mulgrew, Rogne, Kayal, Ledley, Brown and 2nd half Vic to return.

I hope this Anhzi Makachkala buy the 3 Benfica players for 90m as surely it will weaken them and help us.

  12. Has our new arrival duly arrived?

    Paul67,

You make an excellent point. I would think the management have to pick games where the young ones aren’t going to be kicked to bits, with the connivance of the referee. Games at Celtic Park against the likes of Hibs look the obvious choice. Brines yesterday allowed even them to kick young Forrest with impunity.

  13. Spanish media reporting that [ according to Levante ] Lassad Nouioui signed for Levante at 2am [ Spanish time ] on 1/9 / 2012 .

    Things might get interesting.

    Work done ——- beach time —– !

  14. I am at a loss to understand the logic that states that we LOST 2 points yesterday.

We started the game with 7 points.

We ended it with 8 points.

    What am I missing ?

Are we supposed to assume that we must win ?

Are we becoming The Peepul,.. with all the ‘rights’ that that implies.

    We WON a valuable point.

    End of…

  18. Had a bad dream last night.

They knocked down St Andys and moved Ampelforth to Clydebank.

Think I might have posted in my sleep.

    But nobody reads the nightshift.

    So it’s fine.

  19. Kilbowie Kelt

Obviously not over the moon at not gaining 3 points yesterday,I can understand players

having a bad day,can understand players having a run of bad days.

What I didn’t appreciate about yesterday’s game ……I thought (IMO) Paddy ,just didn’t

look interested, that to me is unforgivable.

I am not a Celt who demands or expects us to win every game, but I expect every

player who’s pulls on that jersey to try a leg.

  20. I’m happy for the boys getting their chance and can relax knowing the league will be ours for years to come.

I seem to be making a habit of being the last poster on a blog.

It’s becoming embarrassing even my son and his pal are ripping me;-) hh

  21. The Exiled Tim ——-

    Don’t know !.

Lot of new signings . Got a good away draw last weekend.

Genoa -lots of new signings Good win last weekend…

I have gone for a score draw .

  22. big joe

    your question tailed off

but if your askin if i am a hunskelper

    the answers a resounding yes

  23. We were without eight players injured yesterday and four new signings were not available. Add in big Victor going off and that left us with a very young squad on the park. Yes it was disappointing to draw at home but the experience that these young players gained will make up for it in the long run. And we will still win the league!

  24. we have a young team and when we put other younger players into the team we are likely to struggle from time to time, but we are a good team and we have good young players. if we did not have so many injuries we would not have played so many young players yesterday, but of course some would have featured.

we should be giving young players more game time and i hope to god celtic are looking at doing this, not only when rangers are not here, but if sevco are promoted to the spl, be that in 2 or 3 years time, because we do have very good young players, but potential will never be reached if opportunity is restricted.

that opportunity should be at celtic park, we should see at least one player come through the academy every season
