Teenage kicks

946

So how do you feel about playing a couple of teenagers, Filip Twardzik and debutant Jackson Irvine, in central midfield, but dropping a couple of SPL points?  Good, I hope.  Welcome to the world of player development.

For a decade or more Celtic produced prodigious youth teams but watched as Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts even Hamilton Accies graduated more effective adult players.  Key to this is perhaps ensuring that players are tested at a higher level at key times in their development.  In short, if you have not played regular first team football by the time you are 22 there is a good chance you will not fulfil your potential.

There is cost to this development, you’re not going to win all the time, especially when the two teenage central midfielders are surrounded by other young players: Adam Matthews, 20, Tony Watt, 18 and James Forrest, 21.  Half time substitute, Victor Wanyama, is still only 21.

I’m looking forward to seeing more teenage kicks in the coming months.

The Beeb saying the deal for Lassad is done.

Yesterday the same site said we had missed out on him…

Liverpool’s main problem is that Gerrard thinks he is bigger than the manager.

Either kick him out or lose your job,Brendan-as has happened to his previous managers.

  3. Many thanks to everyone for their kind wishes yesterday. Had a great evening out.

    SffS, indeed.

    EXILED TIM, agree.

Parkheadcumsalford, yes, James Forrest was badly under-protected by the ref.

  4. Big Swee walks on with Neil Lennon on

Got to agree it is great to see the young players get some much needed time at this level. All about experience and growing into the team as regulars.

We should have been out of site first half if more clinical in front of goal.

    Point won.

    Hail Hail

  6. We are buying in a market where we should have been getting players from for years, mid table Spanish and Italian leagues for that matter. Not all these guys are on funny money,we can improve on the contracts these teams offer.Much better technical players, than getting players who have never played outside Scotland.

    Howdy!

  8. From 2005 I remember we got good money for some of our young players coming through our youth system:

    Beatie 1,650,000,

    McManus 1,500,000,

    Wallace 1,200,000 (deal with Varga),

    Maloney 1.3m

    McGeady 10.5m,

    Marshall 350,000,

    Caddis 175,000,

    Ferry 175,000,

    Sheridan 300,000,

    Scott Cuthbert 100,000

17.25m pounds for these players developed by the club, if young players get a run and together with our new signing policy of young players with potential its not a bad model.

But requires our patience when they are developing, we cant have it all ways!!!

Now is a perfect opportunity to bring them through with less pressure due to opposition, however Comical Ali and Sevconians FC will be back and we want to be ready over the next few years from both a player quality perspective and financial one. A squad packed with young experienced champions league campaigners, selling the odd asset here and there to keep the conveyor belt going. This is a great opportunity for PL to get it right at not huge expense and build a war chest of sorts so we are dominant in our home market. We have to ensure qualification to CL/EL group stages to keep the revenue flowing.

The odd big name , price permitting will put bums on seats if its done right.

Agree with your list of unfulfilled potential – except for Stephen McManus. Stephen was no Cannavaro but he was miles better better than Loovens or Dan.

    I think Victor’s a fine name.

    Noun:

1.A person who defeats an enemy or opponent in a battle, game, or other competition.

2.A code word representing the letter V, used in radio communication.

    Synonyms:

    winner – conqueror – vanquisher – champion

  16. Will be interesting if Stokes and Hooper get the new contracts Neil spoke about towards the end of last season.

  17. Cant say too much of new signings as i dont know enough about them

But the areas of the team that needed bodies in have been addressed so for that we should be pleased

Whether they strengthen us time will tell

However what this window will do is stop headlines from Paul about ” Financial Armeggedon” next year

We havent spent the Ki transfer monies so all of CL money will go onto clubs coffers So if the new guys can justify our Managers faith and the young guns can develop into players they threaten to be then we will be set for next 2 years finiancially

  20. Part of the learning process I guess, but it’d be nice to see James Forrest play to the whistle and not stop expecting the foul to be given.
