Teenage kicks

946

So how do you feel about playing a couple of teenagers, Filip Twardzik and debutant Jackson Irvine, in central midfield, but dropping a couple of SPL points?  Good, I hope.  Welcome to the world of player development.

For a decade or more Celtic produced prodigious youth teams but watched as Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts even Hamilton Accies graduated more effective adult players.  Key to this is perhaps ensuring that players are tested at a higher level at key times in their development.  In short, if you have not played regular first team football by the time you are 22 there is a good chance you will not fulfil your potential.

There is cost to this development, you’re not going to win all the time, especially when the two teenage central midfielders are surrounded by other young players: Adam Matthews, 20, Tony Watt, 18 and James Forrest, 21.  Half time substitute, Victor Wanyama, is still only 21.

I’m looking forward to seeing more teenage kicks in the coming months.

  1. It’s funny enough that “The Rangers” are reduced to playing Elgin. It’s even funnier that they are moved to 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon. But to hear they are behind is hilarious.

They will probably win 5-1 again, but it is such a laugh watching their humiliating attempts to get to the dizzy heights of the third tier.

  2. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

Grade one officials for 4th tier game, are they still getting the grand a game ?

  3. James Forest throws his hands up on occasions when it’s not a foul.

Yes he often gets kicked all over the place and yes he needs more protection from the officials but the guy is a footballer and needs to remember one of the first things he would have been taught all those years ago when he first started.

  7. Good to see Celtic (and some new fourth level club) supporting ethnic minority sporting events by hosting the UK football championships. These used to be the UK Asian sports but have now been broaden to support diversity. The Final is being played at Celtic Park next week and entry is free!

Is there an opportunity for an Irish team in the SEMSA?

If NL was upset at Watt’s workrate yesterday he must get radio rental when Stokes deigns to stroll around when he’s playing

On refs – always said it is one of the quickest ways to improve the standard of football on offer in Scotland – just tell/instruct the refs to apply the rules as they are applied all over the rest of Europe!

How often do you say to yourself “Only in Scotland…” when yet another assault goes unpunished or when a Celtic player gets fouled and the ball goes 40 yards away from the opposition goal and the MIB waves play on … as that is advantage!!!!!

  9. First post since returning from yesterday`s game and having been out today.

Expected to see the usual ” We dropped points so we were rubbish.” nonsense. Pleased to see that most posters recognise that we outclassed Hibs and, but for poor finishing and bad luck, would have won by an embarrassing amount.

IMO , Brines is a cheat . This was obvious to me on numerous occasions. So, whilst I can see why some say a player should always play to the whistle, I believe James Forrest is correct to constantly appeal against this blatant cheating.

Filip Twardzik is a class act. Tony Watt has shown that he has what it takes but he also showed that he is a youhg guy with a lot to learn. Filip looks the real deal already.

Without the Green Brigade on days like yesterday (which, despite the result, was men against boys with our boys being the men!), Celtic Park is lacking in atmosphere. Hats off to the remarkable Green Brigade.

  10. Just watched a short feature on Radamel Falcao over here.

165 goals in 248 games as a pro.

That’s nearly as good as Henrik.

Do we have any scouts in Colombia?

  11. Doesn’t matter if servo come back and win, totally embarrassing for them to be 1 down to Elgin considering how much they have spent, although Elgin have history than them.

When the huns were winning everything in scotland, and were getting humped in europe every season, the msm kept telling us the reason was the lack of quality week in week out in scotland.

The reason they kept getting papped oot of europe was fair referees.

The oportunity to change the game for the better is there, but no, still the same old same old.

Jeez they really do hate us.

  13. This morning I came on and posted I was running the Half Marathon in Glasgow today.

I finished it and it was a wonderful experience.

I am at present drinking beer, I will continue that for some time whilst lurking, if I post nonsense you know why.

  14. TET

My older brother always said that , apart from having quality players and a truly great manager , Celtic won the European Cup because of fair refereeing in European games.

The difference between the ref on Wednesday and Brines yesterday was as obvious as Brines` anti-Celtic officiating.
