Tell Buffon we don’t score goals but Gary Hooper does

455

Football reporting tends to follow trends and the Celtic support has been trending since the Barcelona game in November.  Juventus have arrived ready to steel themselves against wave after wave of Glasgow sentiment, but Gianluigi Buffon is right, crowds don’t score goals, or win games.

We have a part to play in settling the Celtic players and ensuring they are encouraged when they need it most (i.e. after making a mistake) but Celtic beat Barcelona because Neil Lennon designed a game plan which out-manoeuvred one of the most effective teams in history.  His players knew their tasks and stuck to plan impeccably.

If Juventus think that all they have to worry about are the fans they will lose tonight to players who have bloodied a few noses already this season.  Bizarrely, our secret weapon is not a stadium full of screaming lunatics (no implication or offence meant), it is a group of players who have proven that they can beat anyone.

Celtic have been rocked in the opening minutes of European games in recent seasons.  Starting with an edge is important.  We also need to be alert to the fact that Barcelona scored two of their three goals against Celtic beyond the 90 minute mark.  Games don’t end until the referee decides.  The 80-odd minutes between these times will take care of themselves.

And, if you meet Gianluigi on his way into Celtic Park tonight, tell him he’s right about crowds not scoring goals, but Gary Hooper does.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

I used to go to the J J all the time. I have a wee son and as I work away from home I don’t go out to watch the football as much as before. But yes the JJ is my pub of choice. How do you know it?

good to see you on again, I told you not to put that nail in the fuse holder :oD)))

  3. Just heard Arrigo Sacchi on the radio .[ Not a Juve fan ]

    He talked tactics ——

Juve aren’t the best at defending [ even more so without Chiellini ]

Juve will go for it . Celtic have a dilemma — do they try to narrow the game and force Juve to go through a tight midfield or do they attack Juve knowing that will give Juve width and space .. ?

If they cannot sustain their football club through football, we are better off without them.

lived in the ‘bul for a while through work – there was a period between June 2003 and October of that year that I spent every Friday and Saturday night in the JJ (in it’s old location up beside taksim) – lived there again between 2005 and 2009 but was a less frequent visitor to the JJ – my now hubby wasn’t a fan (I didn’t know him in 2003). Gulsum is still my friend on FB.

We must have an Istanbul conversation some time – not today, as in the words of KevJ -I’m off oot – but I actually mean it….

ASOD – as BMCUW pointed out re UBIG, Hearts owe twice as much to UBIG as Romanov’s 65% share of Ukios is worth.

If push comes to shove, and he needs to dough to keep the whole group floating, it’s flats flats glororious flats down Gorgie way.

The club can be bought for whatever it’s worth sans stadium – buttons – and take a groundshare with Livi ’til they sort out a new home. It needn’t close the company down, but most likely means stripping it of anything of value and repatriating the capital to support UBIG.

Whatever way things play out, there is an inevitability about it all that is striking and seems unavoidable.

    Damn right-it’s football first.

A fine article in the latest 442 about Borrussia Dortmund, and how they tried to build on their success in 1997 by turning the club into a business which saw football income as a sideline.

It went well-they were within hours of bankruptcy-and automatic stripping of professional status, but for their equivalent of a CVA.

FOOTBALL CLUBS HAVE FANS,NOT CUSTOMERS,AND ONE OR TWO CLUBS SHOULD BEAR THAT IN MIND.

TESCO might want to see their customers through the doors-or should that be starting gates,haha?-on a regular basis, but we are NOT people who can be swayed by a cheaper offer at a rival.

We should be rewarded and acknowledged, not taken for granted, and treated with disdain.

In the case of Hearts, their fans have been sold down the river by a snake-oil salesman. I feel for them, honestly. But I doubt I will miss them.

They can’t build flats at the ground due to the close proximity of the drug factory down there. I believe it may have a work around but Romanov has already checked it out.

  11. Just read this in the the ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ – missed it this morning.

Gigi Buffon has played in 73 CL matches for Parma and Juventus.

    …and conceded 69 goals.

Not a great record I would say.

Let’s hope that after tonight his CL record reads –

    – played 74

    – goals conceded 74.

    I can dream!

Celtic have played 61 home games in the European Cup / Champions League since 1966, and only lost two of them

    Can’t be right.

We’ve lost to Barca twice in last few years, 1-3 and 2-3.

Also beatned by Arsenal – may have been a qualifier but if you’re saying European Cup / Champions League surely that counts?
