RANGERS 2 CELTIC 2 May 6 1967
CELTIC clinched their second successive title in the original nine-in-a-row sequence during a relentless downpour at Ibrox on an unforgettable Saturday afternoon in May 1967.
Jock Stein’s team had a game in hand and realised a draw would be enough to be crowned champions for the 22nd time.
Tommy Gemmell saluted the dazzling performance of diminutive winger Jimmy Johnstone who thumped in a double as the rain tumbled from the heavens.
HIGH AND MIGHTY…Jimmy Johnstone is hoisted by Tommy Gemmell after his first goal at Ibrox in May 1967 as Celtic seal their second successive title. Bertie Auld is about to join in.
The extrovert defender recalled: “The pitch was an absolute sea of mud and there was our five feet nothing outside-right terrorising the opposing defence.
“In the first-half, Sandy Jardine lashed a shot high past Ronnie Simpson, but their advantage was nullified minutes later when Bobby Lennox struck the post and Wee Jinky swept in the ricochet.
“In the second-half, our wee winger weaved his way in from the right onto his so-called ‘weaker’ left foot. Suddenly, he took aim from about 25 yards and sent a scorching left-foot drive high past Martin.
“Rangers got a late equaliser, but we still celebrated the title on the ground of our oldest enemy.
“Could it get any better? Well, as a matter of fact, it could in Lisbon 19 days later!”
