CELTIC 7 RANGERS 1 October 19 1957
CELTIC were the holders when they took on Rangers in the League Cup Final at Hampden on crisp, clear October afternoon in 1957.
Exactly 82,293 fans were at the national stadium for the silverware showpiece against the Ibrox side who were the bookies’ favourites to lift the trophy. Amazingly, it was the first Cup Final duel between the two Glasgow sides for thirty years.

THE HAMPDEN GOAL HEROES…Willie Fernie, Billy McPhail, Neilly Mochan and Sammy Wilson.
Being written off didn’t upset the Parkhead men as they ran amok and enjoyed what still stands today as their biggest victory over their old foes. Sammy Wilson scored in the 23rd minute and Neilly Mochan doubled the advantage a minute before the turnaround.
Shortly after the interval, Billy McPhail claimed the first of his hat-trick and, although there was a quick response from Rangers, the centre-forward hit No.4 in the 69th minute.
Mochan scored again and McPhail completed his trio in the 81st minute. With almost the last kick of the ball, Willie Fernie slotted in No.7 with a penalty-kick.
