Textbook away performance, Brand Britain

3353

I was a bit annoyed at BT’s halftime analysis which suggested Celtic were more than fortunate to be level at that stage.  Salzburg had just enjoyed their best 15 minute period of the game, but, from beginning to end, Celtic’s performance was a textbook lesson on how to play away from home in Europe.  We took our chances and drew our defensive line well in front of our box.  This is how it’s done.

Were you as comfortable as I was during the final minutes last night?

Having watched the performance against Aberdeen on Saturday, when we bossed the game but were penned back when, with two debutants and a returning Scott Brown in the team, the legs faded in the last 30 minutes, I expected the same to happen last night.

Instead, Scott’s goal arrived on 60 minutes, which infused Celtic legs with adrenalin.  This was the crucial moment of the game.  We conceded that fabulous goal from Soriano during the final 30 minutes, but this was also our best period of the game.  Wakaso (who is a player, b.t.w.) ran himself into the ground – literally.  Brown, Johansen, Izaguirre and Ambrose all covered enormous areas of the pitch.

Instead of going through turmoil in the closing stages, we saw Salzburg drop deep, acknowledging the clear danger they could concede for a third time.

The one obvious question is, how did we pick Craig Gordon up for free?

Brand Britain

Brand Britain is damaged. Last night’s vote was a high water mark for independence, so far, but the demographic breakdown suggests support for change is strongest among the young. If the three major UK parties have any intention of maintaining the status quo they need to indulge in considerable Nation Building.

The football business in Britain is in the hands of two closed-shop cartels, one in England and Wales [controlled by the affluent], and one in Scotland [controlled by the unambitious]. This arrangement has disenfranchised Scottish football and drains our economy of tens of millions of pounds per year. It is a clear manifestation of second class status for Scotland and our economy, which is unacceptable for anyone who considers the UK to be one nation.

Politicians with an interest in pushing the buttons of the people, should use this time to call this arrangement out for what it is.

That’s the way to win friends then – I’ll down tonight safe in the knowledge that my country hasn’t taken leave of its senses and voted to launch itself on a fantasy voyage to the bottom

Even Murdoch ‘s scummy newspaper recognised that the economic policies on offer were nonsense

Try looking after the poor when you are completely broke!

We were offered an independent Scotland that would have been all things to all men and women but who or what would have paid for it?

Oil! But when that was questioned all they could do was try to shoot the messenger!

This happened on the currency and anything else when proper scrutiny was applied

The last bit of propaganda I got from the yes campaign was a wish list that Would have made Scotland a true utopia -unfortunately there was absolutely no indication of how it would all be paid for!

As our American cousins tell it “it’s the economy stupid!”

Nationalism is a heady brew that intoxicates many -especially the young and the idealistic

    Socialism can do the same

We should always, always beware those who want to combine both

History warns us that it can lead to real disaster!

Iran has just issued suspended sentences of one year in prison and 91 lashes to a group of 6 young people who videoed themselves dancing to the Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy”.

Now, there’s a country with a serious disconnect between its ruling group and its young people. Sometimes we over-estimate the oppression we experience.

I hope when the young people of Iran take over they punish the old men by making them dance to Pharrell’s wee ditty too and post it on You Tube.

Celtic winger Aleksandar Tonev charged with racist abuse.

    • Alleged incident reported by Aberdeen full-back Shay Logan

    • Bulgaria winger has previously denied the accusation

The Celtic winger Aleksandar Tonev has been charged with racist abuse by the Scottish Football Association.

The Aberdeen full-back Shay Logan accused the on-loan Aston Villa player of a racial slur during his team’s 2-1 defeat at Celtic Park last weekend.

He reported the alleged second-half incident to the referee Bobby Madden and his captain Mark Reynolds before informing his manager Derek McInnes.

The fourth official, Crawford Allan, and Celtic were also made aware of the allegation by the Dons management team.

Celtic released a statement that said Tonev had denied the allegation: “We have spoken to the player and he has stated that the accusation made is not true.”

The Bulgaria winger was making his Celtic debut after arriving this summer on a one-year loan deal from Aston Villa with a groin injury.

The Scottish Football Association compliance officer has issued a notice of complaint accusing Tonev of “excessive misconduct by the use of offensive, insulting and abusive language of a racist nature”.

The player has until 26 September to respond, with a Hampden hearing pencilled in for 9 October.

Personally I believed that ye could have built a decent caring society as an Independent entity, However we are never going to know, lets see whether the power brokers in Westminister will now deliver for ye. My belief is that they won’t and at next election the SNP will be stronger than ever.

  12. The Honest Cover-up on

I hope it won’t be long before the bitterness in this blog dissipates and we get back to talking about football. Never before have I known the Celtic online community to be so divided. This has made our arguments on the Poppy and Strachan v O’Neill seem like friendly banter.

Given that the vote was close to 50:50 as many predicted I would’ve thought that any reasonable person would be able to sympathise with at least some of the viewpoints of the opposite side. Neither the Yes camp or the No’s were a bunch of loonballs extremists. There were extremists within each camp but they both had valid arguments and presentable cases.

I don’t like the sense of gloating among some No voters. This was a close call and had it not been for a potentially bogus promise of further powers it would have been even closer. Humility is called for.

Equally there is an air of self righteousness among some Yes voters today. They weren’t ticking a box to end Scotland of poverty and funding problems. Indeed the proposed notion of simply borrowing yet more money instead of addressing the deficit was fantasy economics. After a huge party this weekend an independent Scotland would be waking up to the mother of all hangovers over how to tackle the problems they have highlighted. Scotland faces tough times ahead. People need to unite. If folk are genuinely concerned about social justice they will mobilise and vote for a party who will use tax raising powers at Holyrood. In the first 15 years or so of the Parliament those people have been nowhere to be seen.

  16. I am disappointed in the result as I have alway thought that a nation can only be called so,if it so determines its own social, economic and political powers path within this complex world of ours. For whatever reasons(and therer are many) the electorate here democratically elected not to agree. They have democratically chosen to re affirm the union of 1707.i, as a democrat abide by that.but I fear it has impkications for the Scottish identity.

I hope the demoratic engagement and participation in the referendum continues as I feel politically and constitutionally we are in for a troubled few years

.The electorate now want to engage with those who govern…but I have no confidence that engagement will be reciprocated. We can see that now, listening to milliband and cameron on the assurances they gave before No won their pyrric victory.meant nothing.
