Textbook case of successful football club

285

In years to come, football fans will refer to the Matt O’Riley episode at Celtic as a textbook case of how a football club should conduct its business.  An English-born player, playing for an English club, was signed for £1.5m and sold for £26m, with add-ons hopefully to come.

Celtic have the luxury of being able to recruit and develop young talent without risking their business model.  Signings will not all be as successful as Matt, but they don’t need to be.  Look at any of the great teams from smaller countries who go deep into European competition, they have things in common.

They recruit lots of young talent, loan them out or play them in their first team.  They develop all of these players, very few will not improve and appreciate in value.  Those not good enough for the first team are sold, more often than not at a profit.  The successes are usually sold quickly, with ever-more invested in the recruitment process.

Salzburg won 10 Austrian titles in a row before losing out to Sturm Graz last season.  Even with one of the most respected operations in the business, football can be unpredictable, but you can hardly get a bet on them winning this term (a winning bet would earn a 20% return, more than a high interest account, but not much more).

As you and I discussed recently, clubs should always be ready to trade.  It’s easier to love the model than to get too attached to the players (except Kyogo).  Best wishes to Matt on the south coast.

  1. Perhaps Chelsea are reaping the reward of going all in on the loan system resulting in a 42 man squad

Do you keep your savings in Turkey or Uzbekistan?

  5. Yep Paul.

And with the success of the model, more mobs will try to emulate our success with it.

Meaning that we’re ideally working on ways to enhance the attraction of drawing prospects to our pool.

Going deeper in Europe (oo err Continental Missus) offers a playing appeal precious few clubs could offer.

I’m a bit surprised Matt didn’t wait around to take in the x8 CL ties with us, but money talks.

And it’s undeniable that our grey suits are smashing their financial KPIs with a sale like that (tho Brendan’s steely insistence it’s ‘ the player’s true value not the league’s profile’ did its part very well!)

Incidentally, I thought US and THEMS could actually be competing for similar profile signings from now on.

The only thing we need fear for the weekend is complacency. HH

  7. Get GT signed up right away, get another LB for competition.

Greig is a grafter/trier and someone else pushing him will help Greig.

We need LB, CH, 2 midfielders.

A couple of loans with right to buy, a winger and if its only 1 then fine.

  10. The fact the manager is in public record as saying recruitment is not where it should be betrays the best run club narrative.

Yes we’ve secured a big price for Matt. Problem is – every club in the world knows it and will act accordingly should we call them…

Spot on. Especially your last point.

It’s why I was delighted Lawrence of Govan was out here saying they will come and get a result motivated by their sense of being written off.

Hopefully our guys are grounded and fully focused.

Not a single 2 goal margin win for us last season in the Glasgow derby games. Nothing to be complacent about.

  13. It’s a funny thing Paul but I don’t see you writing about Brendan being a bed wetter since his comments on Friday and post match Sunday.

He’s openly and quite rightly stated our recruitment isn’t as efficient as you and many others make it out to be.

If we sign all of the linked players we will indeed have done well but none of them will have been brought in as early as was wanted.

So in 2021 we had lost our first league in 10. We lost the guts of our squad.

    We recruited a top manager

    We recruited :

    Kyogo

    Abada

    Starfelt

    Hatate

    Maeda

    O Riley

    JJ

    GG

    Harte

    Jota

    CCV

    And several others.

We have won 3 leagues since and 7 domestic trophies despite a hugely overspending rival.

We have sold on Starfelt Jota JJ GG Abada and ORiley for significant money. Yet the asset value of our player pool is now stronger than ever.

We are on the cusp of a pretty exciting new Campaign in Europe where we have a settled team and formula (albeit MOR exit needs adjustment) and many are very confident we can win domestically.

We have signed players who have proven themselves here or elsewhere this season so far in Schmeichal Bernardo and Idah and have projects with the Finnish GK and the Barcelona LB (maybe more than a project). We should sign a couple more in the next few days and rotate out some surplus.

Frankly both on and off the park I would struggle to name a better run club financially or in trophy haul from anywhere outside the big 5 leagues in Europe.

    Can you name one ?

  19. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Yep – great bit of business. Best wishes, Matt. Pretty sure we’ll see you at a bigger EPL club before long.

Talking of Salzburg I was hoping we might make a move for their young MF Kjaergaard.

Quality player already and plenty of scope to develop further, although unlikely we would show that much ambition in a year that partner club are not in the CL.

  20. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Agree that’s the model and i haven’t seen a single fan complain about Matt’s sale. Of course only works if the recruitment is better than under Mark Lawwwell’s disgraced reign.

Also a depressing reminder that we are below the likes of Brighton in the food chain. Thanks Rupert Murdoch.

Almost ten years to the day……………..

“ That is one thing that is coming through is that there needs to be a bit more understanding or realism about what the Scottish football environment is and where we are in a club in that. It is tough and there are real challenges.

In terms of investment our policy our commitment is that every penny that comes into the club will be reinvested, it will go back into the club. I do not think we can be clearer than that.

There is no pile of cash sitting there that we could look at, watch, feel and touch. It doesn’t exist. It is fantasy.

‘We have a wee bit of cash reserve, which gives us stability, and we have money we can invest on the right players. We can do it at the right time and we have a track record of doing that. “

  22. Looking at the prospects re the CL draw does anyone really think we cannot get to the last 16 knockout stage ?

I realise it does depend on the luck of the draw but we have every chance. A lot of luck with the Pot 2 team we get at home might help but essentially beatable pot 3 or 4 teams is what will help.

Getting seeded for the playoffs would be massive but would need 3 wins and 2 draws out of 8 games. An unseeded spot would just need 2 wins and possibly 1 draw but likely 2 draws out of 8 matches. Looking at the teams it is doable.

The fact the manager is in public record as saying recruitment is not where it should be betrays the best run club narrative.

The only fact there is that Brendan thinks recruitment is not where it should be. Which isn’t really a fact.

The manager is on record as saying “there’s no doubt here, the club is super well-run”. Which does feed into the successful club narrative, but not the best run club narrative that you just made up

  25. I’ve been checking the DR lately – the message is consistent – there’s not much hope of players coming in to ibrokes and they’re trying to offload but not guaranteed of it.

    IMHO.

Why did Dermott / the Board not stipulate to the celtic fans who coffed up (pardon the pun) for the covid season that they would get reductions on their books say over three seasons to cover them for their outlay , if not , why not ?

    If they did my apologies

As I’ve said before , Peter /board /Dermott can’t be faulted for the financial health of the club .

I don’t have the view that we’re as far in front of the huns on the pitch as a few here would like me to believe .

As you said 1 goal wins (one is all that’s needed ) is to close for comfort to losing a league .

Europe for me is a free hit.

We can’t spend to improve (so I’m told)

So I go along for the atmosphere , meering old friends ,the experience of seeing some quality players and watch our bhoys go toe to toe with some of the best on the planet …..wonderful nights if not always the results .
