Textbook case of successful football club

285

In years to come, football fans will refer to the Matt O’Riley episode at Celtic as a textbook case of how a football club should conduct its business.  An English-born player, playing for an English club, was signed for £1.5m and sold for £26m, with add-ons hopefully to come.

Celtic have the luxury of being able to recruit and develop young talent without risking their business model.  Signings will not all be as successful as Matt, but they don’t need to be.  Look at any of the great teams from smaller countries who go deep into European competition, they have things in common.

They recruit lots of young talent, loan them out or play them in their first team.  They develop all of these players, very few will not improve and appreciate in value.  Those not good enough for the first team are sold, more often than not at a profit.  The successes are usually sold quickly, with ever-more invested in the recruitment process.

Salzburg won 10 Austrian titles in a row before losing out to Sturm Graz last season.  Even with one of the most respected operations in the business, football can be unpredictable, but you can hardly get a bet on them winning this term (a winning bet would earn a 20% return, more than a high interest account, but not much more).

As you and I discussed recently, clubs should always be ready to trade.  It’s easier to love the model than to get too attached to the players (except Kyogo).  Best wishes to Matt on the south coast.

No jokes. Honestly beware re Aluko. Not worth even thinking about it in this day and age.

Really not. I have my thoughts and will just keep them to myself on that particular lady.

If we did meet for a beer, as mentioned previous then I might give you my views and understanding on that one.

I’ve not taken much notice of the changes this season to the Champions League setup until this week, with the draw for match opponents coming up. I absolutely loathe every single thing about this competition except the money UEFA give Celtic for playing in it.

It’s a good thing to start on 6 bonus coefficient points for group phase (it’s been 4pts for all previous seasons I can remember), so the first target, I believe, is two wins from our four home games. Such would achieve the 10pts coefficient season total required to return us to our starting points total (32pts) with six more opportunities to add to the total.

The key for me is scoring goals. My hope is Kyogo and Hatate are ready in their heads. Idah arrived in January and showed us he can score at tough away fixtures so he’s a positive addition for me.

    Ref Bobby Davidson

Can anyone remember him refereeing a Glasgow Derby which we actually won ?

I can’t recall it myself but I do recall him ruining our treble in 1970 that fateful day v Aberdeen.

  5. Think Brendan said” Certain aspects” of the recruitment needed looked at.Apart from that, glowing praise for those involved.

    Not damning.

Wait until you see the kerfuffle on the last day and night of the window, darn saff. You know, these perfectly run teams with fantastic recruitment teams, turning it into a bun fight.

I remember Jock Stein going on to the pitch to confront Davidson in a midweek league cup tie v Dundee at Celtic Park.

  7. As from tomorrow Celtic need to step up on signing at least 3 players ,we have until 11 pm Friday to get our business done,

I’ll be glad when the fooking transfer window closes. I’m drinking more to control my stress levels.

The wee Jinky goal was so important and struck with his left foot as well, in full view of the inter manager.

    Winning the league at ibrox.

I was just too young to remember that but it really was the best.

*As the Clancy’s sung “naw nae never naw nae never no more”, after the sheep cup final the Big Mhan gave mitb davidshun such a mouthful at the end that he was fined £10 by the scottish freemason association

In later years sheep boss Eddie Turnbull was asked if his performance was that bad to which he replied: “Put it this way, if I had been in big Jock’s shoes, I’d have had 20 quid’s worth! after that”

  12. Beaton know to be upset re not getting the big job last year. It will be interesting to see how he performs on Sunday. Hopefully we don’t give him the chance to influence but it is never that easy.

Marspapa- I think Taylor was offered a new contract last few months of last season possibly.

I really Hope the wee guy signs on again . He’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I for one wouldn’t like him to go .

  14. We’re a hostage to fortune now. Cash rich and running out of time. We will not be coming out on top of any negotiations this week. That’s the price you pay for leaving it till the last few days of the window.

    ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I was lucky enough to be at the Demolition Derby and I would probably go for the King of Kings chip, but wee Jinky’s goal is a close second.

  16. I don’t get the point that Brendan saying we need to improve our recruitment approach, undercuts the narrative that we are a well run club.

Surely, that’s the kind of goal that every well run club should have.

Who would say “We’re happy with what we’re doing” or “We’re gonna rest on our laurels cos we’re already there” or “This can’t be improved on”.

In any case- it’s just a cheap talk aspiration until it can get defined into operational terms. I often had to write Development Plans in my workplace and try and knock such aspirations into concrete steps that the aspiration-producers forgot to include. A wish list is not much use until it becomes a doable list and you can measure your success or failure against it.

Over half of the Development Plans I read from rival organisations were just a compilation of wishes and lies.

Is Louis palma for the off ?….

Looks like this guy is the next rumour to be linked with us

    —-

I was undecided on Palma for a long time but I’d sell him now. He’s not Celtic and his decision to take to social media after not getting game time last weekend will undoubtedly work against him.

I make Bernardo the only success from last summer’s window. Undoubtedly a window that will be referenced for all the wrong reasons for years to come.
