Textbook case of successful football club

285

In years to come, football fans will refer to the Matt O’Riley episode at Celtic as a textbook case of how a football club should conduct its business.  An English-born player, playing for an English club, was signed for £1.5m and sold for £26m, with add-ons hopefully to come.

Celtic have the luxury of being able to recruit and develop young talent without risking their business model.  Signings will not all be as successful as Matt, but they don’t need to be.  Look at any of the great teams from smaller countries who go deep into European competition, they have things in common.

They recruit lots of young talent, loan them out or play them in their first team.  They develop all of these players, very few will not improve and appreciate in value.  Those not good enough for the first team are sold, more often than not at a profit.  The successes are usually sold quickly, with ever-more invested in the recruitment process.

Salzburg won 10 Austrian titles in a row before losing out to Sturm Graz last season.  Even with one of the most respected operations in the business, football can be unpredictable, but you can hardly get a bet on them winning this term (a winning bet would earn a 20% return, more than a high interest account, but not much more).

As you and I discussed recently, clubs should always be ready to trade.  It’s easier to love the model than to get too attached to the players (except Kyogo).  Best wishes to Matt on the south coast.

    Nawrocki is German.

Wonder if Augsburg fancy player plus cash?

    ……….…

Why will no one admit to signing this play, who has shown up well in my opinion?

To say as some have done that he gets exposed too often, well that is down to team shape and managerial competency.

Some managers are aware that the defence must also be defended, as the Great MON demonstrated with two defensive attack dogs in midfield, Lambert and Lennon, doing the hounding job in front of the defence.

Stevie Clarke had Alan Power and another in front of their defence, sometimes the six outfield players all shielding the defence, which led to Greg Taylor catching a lot of eyes, until he comes to Celtic with wide open yards of space in front of him leaving him vulnerable and always being blamed for being made to look like the weakest link.

Any manager who dizny realise that the defence must also be defended will get his team relegated out of the EPL and go to managerial buroo to be picked up by some chancing pretentious SPL team and a new grift begins.

And they say its the Huns who are pretenders.

  4. Augsburg,many years ago I was there on business for my company.Picked up at the airport by a Director.Very pleasant guy,but looked familiar.Over lunch,kept looking,on the fly.He said”You know me dont you.You should.For a while I was a hero in your country”

Turns out he was Uwe Zeeler, scorer of two goals in WC in Mexico, that put England out..Lovely man.

    Wee story.

  5. The transfer window is ticking by and we are weaker than when last seasonended. 2 Keepers replaced by 2 new keepers, midfielder and striker brought in who were here last year and perhaps a 20 year old leftback loanee. Board have 2 full days to get some quality additions in.

Readying self for the yearly excuses now

  6. Roy Aitken is a Celtic great who, when in full flow charging forward through the centre of the field, was a spectacular sight. He had been the rock in Celtic’s defence in many successes from 1977 until 1989 and a fine Celtic captain. An inspirational player, he was always able to motivate those around him and Roy Aitken’s true value to Celtic was never fully appreciated by many until he left. Many would even argue that the barren years to 1995 really sunk in and began when Roy Aitken left the club, as Celtic were left rudderless thereafter for many years.

  9. I suppose the laughter surrounding the Hun takeover story led people away from the valuation put on the shambles.£150 million !!!!!.Really,WTF did that valuation come from. Not unless they are throwing in the Bicycle and the Loving Cup.

Is it not possible for them to take a day off from making an arse of themselves.Panto Season.

  10. Stebhoy,

You are just desperate for that window to slam shut.

Bet you have been rehearsing, writing down things to post.Reams of paper everywhere.Go on,you can tell me,I won’t say.

  11. garygillespieshamstring on

I’m sure I heard something about a Motherwell born billionaire being interested in a takeover.

    A pound for your thoughts.

  12. Turkeybhoy

Augsburg now Allegedly wanting£13-15 million from us.

Not true. The article you picked that up from on news now mentioned €13-15M all-in, suggesting the £6.5M lowball offer could go up to say £9M plus add ons etc

Folk might think that’s too much for a player they picked up for pocket change two seasons ago, but the exact same could be said for MOR

  13. I’m inside your head Turkeybhoy Stephboy67 said everything I was thinking. Rodgers asked for quality to improve the team and compete in champs league. This far, players we have signed or are linked with do not do that – valle, Engels , bogusz, trusty – are interesting but maybes !

  14. Good Morning from a dry but overcast North Staffs

Would be good to see some confirmed deals today.

  15. Best wishes to Matt for a speedy recovery- not even a booking for the terrible tackle- Scottish like refereeing

  16. heroes are forever on

Fritzong Scullybhoy wholeheartedly agree about Roy Aitken, i think he’s now a Celtic ambassador

  17. Sorry to see Matt getting ‘clugged’ five minutes into his debut – hope it’s not so bad.

This kind of event can explain and illustrate why when a life-changing offer comes in, a player will almost always want to move on. You are only one bad tackle away from having a career jeopardised.

Some said Matt should have waited another year and that another offer would come along – well maybe yes, maybe no and just maybe a career-ending injury.

Good luck Matt – hope you’re back soon.

  18. Stebhoy,

Only noising you up mate.Try lightening up a bit with the window. What will be will be.You fretting won’t put a bomb under their ass.

Normal Celtic fan with 3 days window left.
