In years to come, football fans will refer to the Matt O’Riley episode at Celtic as a textbook case of how a football club should conduct its business. An English-born player, playing for an English club, was signed for £1.5m and sold for £26m, with add-ons hopefully to come.
Celtic have the luxury of being able to recruit and develop young talent without risking their business model. Signings will not all be as successful as Matt, but they don’t need to be. Look at any of the great teams from smaller countries who go deep into European competition, they have things in common.
They recruit lots of young talent, loan them out or play them in their first team. They develop all of these players, very few will not improve and appreciate in value. Those not good enough for the first team are sold, more often than not at a profit. The successes are usually sold quickly, with ever-more invested in the recruitment process.
Salzburg won 10 Austrian titles in a row before losing out to Sturm Graz last season. Even with one of the most respected operations in the business, football can be unpredictable, but you can hardly get a bet on them winning this term (a winning bet would earn a 20% return, more than a high interest account, but not much more).
As you and I discussed recently, clubs should always be ready to trade. It’s easier to love the model than to get too attached to the players (except Kyogo). Best wishes to Matt on the south coast.

On young Frankie /Alex is the option to buy a non-starter due to the lowish release clause of 2.5 M euros recently included in his Barca contract.
So if Greg really wants pastures new then we can give Alex a hefty signing on if everybody is happy.

now we are worrying about next seasons qualifiers, dearie me.
I’m sure Brendan has talked about having a stronger squad.
Stronger squad can be interpreted as having adequate cover in all positions. Doesn’t mean having better players in some positions.
I would say Adam and Alex have strengthened the squad – not currently first choices.
EKBHOY @ 11:28 AM,
Alex signed a new contract with Barca’ before coming to Celtic
It means his option to buy is a least 8 mn and it’s not exclusive
So if he doesn’t go back to Barca’ anyone can sign him.
It’s kinda like the Idah end of January deal but a bit worse…
Hail Hail

“We needed a quality, experienced left back in at the beginning of the transfer window”
Easier said than done: Brendan 6 July
“We could have had nine players in by now if we wanted, but it’s all about the right players that we want,” Rodgers told the Daily Record.
“There’s no point in us doing anything other than that and sometimes that takes a little bit of patience. In the world nowadays, where everything’s immediate, everyone thinks you can do it straight away, but it’s not always the case. There’s always a collaboration between ourselves and another club to get the players that we want, but I’m very hopeful that come the end of the window, we’ll have a really strong squad and be ready and prepared for an exciting season.
“There’s lots of time. Of course, we would want to get them in sooner rather than later. But it’s always a two-way thing.”
Given that and Brendan’s willingness to convince him to come, wouldn’t you say that Valle is a player he wanted and fits with the “quality” profile Brendan has talked about?
If not then what’s the alternative?

EKBHOY @ 11:28 AM,
…..
Fair dos, 8M is a bit steep for a left back … goodness knows where I got the 2.5M from
this time next season ……….
thank f we didnt have a clause to buy him, he …………. insert name ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, is pish
unless offcourse he is not in the know, and just made up a number.
I defy anyone to say they have seen problem performances from either Odin Thiago Holm or Mark Nawrocki when they have appeared for Celtic.
Apart from a very rash tackle in a CL game, Odin has impressed as an energetic, creative and attack minded midfielder on the rare occasions he gets game time. Brendan commented that he did not protect the ball well enough but that criticism was from a period early on last season where we were doing not much else but ball recycling to no great effect. Brendan’s post Xmas style for Celtic has been much more expansive and risk taking.
Maik Nawrocki suffers from the reputation of being injury prone but I see a period from last August where he was out for 5 weeks with a hammy injury. The rest of the time he was either. not in the squad or an unused sub. Apart from 10 appearances where he seemed to me to be doing fine.
So before, we dismiss all last summers signings as daddies- can you say what it is that is deficient or unworthy about the play of either of these players.
They look perfectly fine to me but Brendan doesn’t fancy either of them very much.
Oh, and before the accusations fly, Brendan has earned the right to select who he sees as worthy of a place. I’m just making the point that we as a support don’t see the problems with these 2 players, so it’s unfair to call them inadequate for Celtic or , indeed , failures.
Previous Celtic failures like Barkas and Jack Hendry and , I expect, Mikey Johnston, have and will show that we misjudged their abilities here.
diddies not daddies obviously- I have no idea if Odin is an Allfather yet
EKBHOY @ 11:44 AM,
His buyout clause would have gone down to €3 mn if he hadn’t signed the new contract with Barca’ so that’s where the £2.5 mn probably came from.
Hail Hail
was it ange who said there will be av even higher turnover of players ? dont get too attached.
it is the model
EKBHOY on 28TH AUGUST 2024 11:44 AM
It was reported all over the internet that it was £2.5m. Possibly erroneously, who knows?
Celtic has made the problems by being so slow to sign new players. Selling clubs know we are desperate, have money, so will play hard ball
new article posted.
It looks like he’s signed a new one year deal with an option for another two so maybe this is about putting him in the shop window while he develops.
Not to say it won’t be of great benefit to us as well but he won’t be here next season
Spanish Quick News. Old life long learners on here😁. Vale, ya bass. 😁
The transfer window opened 14 June 2024 – twelve weeks (eighty-four days) in duration. That we have waited till day eighty-two to add to last year’s squad, with the exception of the early goalkeepers, speaks for itself – I wonder what day eighty-three & four will bring.
The club is well-run of that there is no doubt – the recruitment department, taking all the well known availablity and affordability caveats into consideration, is not up to the same standard – sad to say this – maybe this year will be a landmark and things will change. HH
