Thank you, Celtic, growing the family

That’s the response from Scottish Premiership clubs on notification they will each receive £365k solidarity payment from Uefa for Celtic reaching the Champions League group stage. At the bottom end of the league, that will pay the wages of six members of the squad for a year.  To one and all: You’re welcome.

Further up the table, it could make the difference between being underwater and not needing to seek borrowing. Be in no doubt, this is a great day to go to work at all top flight Scottish clubs. Directors across the country, who keep their clubs afloat with personal loans, would have been on their feet cheering as Scott Sinclair’s opener hit the net – all of them.

I loved the interactive billboard campaign which launched within minutes of full time: “This is how it feels to be in the Champions League”. As a club, we are hitting all the bases right now; opening avenues for the whole of Glasgow, and Scotland, to enjoy and participate in our success. This is how it feels to grow the Celtic family.

As for the weak-minded among you: there was never any danger last night. Without profligacy in front of goal, we would have been ahead at the break. Scott Brown learned that two mistakes in quick succession is likely to lead to a goal, while Mikael Lustig satisfied his long-held curiosity as to what would happen if he was the last defender, and instead of closing down an opponent rushing towards goal, he backed off.  It would have been a great learning experience for some of the young players involved.

Rijeka couldn’t lay a glove on Olympiakos last night, while Sevilla only just clung onto their advantage over Istanbul Basaksehir, who were a goal away from qualifying for the group stage, and elevating Celtic to pot 3. Our hopes now lie with Hoffenheim overturning a 1-2 deficit at Liverpool. Pot 4 beckons. Still, I’m not complaining.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

I am looking forward to seeing the game again tonight and reviewing the mistakes. The first was down to ultimate mistake of Ajer positioning but also losing the ball in the first place. The second I’m not clear how they got through but Browns attempted clearance and header put it on a plate. Brown hasn’t made mistakes like that in a long time. We then failed to get a grip and kill the game after that with another goal giving them momentum this time a player allowed to advance through 3 Celtic players crossing for unmarked and not followed Astana player. Ntcham and Lustig inside the 6 yard box but no midfielder from Celtic followed the run- who should have tracked him and why was the cross not stopped.

The 4th came from a quick attack after Griffiths missed a sitter. The ball was passed from around the half way line behind Tierney who was about 15-20 yards from half way line and 10-15 yards inside the pitch. Had we gone to a 352 by this point? Why was Kieran so high? Bitton then makes a half arsed attempt to stop Twumasi and he speeds into the box with Lustig stopping.

Their attacks all came with no challenge from someone trying to run back alongside them. For some reason we don’t seem able to foul opposition players high up the pitch they ran straight at banks of 2 or 3 Celtic players with no Celtic player knowing if they should commit or sit off. Normally we keep the ball so well that these issues don’t present themselves. The 3 goals in the second half as well as the reaction to losing them should lead to some coaching situations to eradicate it. It’s schoolboy stuff though not tracking runners and not taking initiative also not taking a bloody foul higher up!

Brendan Rodgers may feel that two centre backs with some experience may have prevented 1 of the goals perhaps 2 but the source comes from higher up the pitch.

If your shape dictates that a player is in a position to do forward damage is he also able to recover if the ball transitions to a situation where he should be defending?

Rodgers tried to plug the holes with a change of shape but I’m not sure the players had the composure to retain possession or act as a group who knew who would press the attacker and who would sit off.

This year was the best opportunity to go into the qualifiers with a settled team in umpteen years. The end of the season would have been a reference point to consider what the team would look like going into last nights game. No one can really fault the coaching staff for two of our Centre Backs being injured but we did let two or 3 centre backs go so we knew we were short of at least one. We are about to sign the Social the South African lad so this demonstrates the need. He cost £800k. I imagine his signing wasn’t subject to Champions League football so why not sign him at the start of the Window? What would the difference in cost have been?

Also we have two strikers for one slot. I agree that for all other positions 2 players is enough but our main striker role is so specialist that we need 2 fit strikers in the squad for each match. If Forrest or Rogic were the contingency then why were they not tried there last season for a longer period?

These qualifiers are the be all and end all of our progression as a club. The planning and thought should be meticulous. At least we have the comfort that the more we qualify the more we earn which should lessen the chance of losing out at qualification each year.

Next year I am hopeful that we have no issues with key positions such as Scott Brown, Armstrongs contracts – strengthening the right back area, replacing Dembele or Griffiths, bids for Tierney or Ntcham?

    Excellent player assessment.

  6. A comment I saw:

“What a great week for both halves of the Old Firm (sic) – £365,000 for Rangers and £35 million for Celtic. Both teams should be able to strengthen considerably before the window closes.”

  7. Rogic, Armstrong and Ntcham look a very strong midfield 3. Would love to see them commit long term to the bhoys. Broonie seems to be the first name on the team sheet for Brendan, but I feel those 3 are our strongest midfield for the CL.

Catch you next time I’m in Jersey.

    Must fly!

  15. Pointless trying to choose an ideal group really, but if we were drawn in a group with Anderlecht as the Pot 3 team I would fancy our chances of getting the EL spot.

  16. Think I must have a weaker disposition than most cos I only calmed down after a good night’s sleep. At 4-1 I was very apprehensive to say the least.

Very glad we got through and hope for a more favourable draw this time round.

Will say again that I think we have found a gem in Mr ntcham. Kudos to whoever spotted him

Mr Trainer came to eldest son’s school to talk to sixth year leavers. Very nice guy and a Celtic man through in through.

    Hail Hail

  18. Bullshit criticism of lustig Paul!

He was seeking to cover the inside pass as that was the highest likelihood/threat option.

You could equally criticise Gordon for being beaten at his head post. Or credit the boy for his wonder strike.

Or look at the role of another ‘defender’ in that and another goal. I won’t name names as it’s for my Dublin pal to source scapegoats.

As for faint hearts? For a period during the 3rd quarter the sieve was returning with alarming and accelerating pace.

On another night we could have scored loads. They almost did, and it was more good luck than judgement that stemmed the flow.

  19. How does it happen?

First half as controlled and competent and effective away performance as any I’ve seen.

Second half for 28 minutes…..total brain freeze.

Understood football is a game for humans with all their imperfections. But still….

  23. Go tell the Spartim on

All im hoping for is for us to be at full strength for each and every CL game, then we’ll see how far we’ve come.

We need some of the team to evolve as leaders, imho, if Broonie slackens, as he did last night, we need others to step up, a calming influence was needed last night.
