Thank you, Celtic, growing the family

“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“*!*! you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”

That’s the response from Scottish Premiership clubs on notification they will each receive £365k solidarity payment from Uefa for Celtic reaching the Champions League group stage. At the bottom end of the league, that will pay the wages of six members of the squad for a year.  To one and all: You’re welcome.

Further up the table, it could make the difference between being underwater and not needing to seek borrowing. Be in no doubt, this is a great day to go to work at all top flight Scottish clubs. Directors across the country, who keep their clubs afloat with personal loans, would have been on their feet cheering as Scott Sinclair’s opener hit the net – all of them.

I loved the interactive billboard campaign which launched within minutes of full time: “This is how it feels to be in the Champions League”. As a club, we are hitting all the bases right now; opening avenues for the whole of Glasgow, and Scotland, to enjoy and participate in our success. This is how it feels to grow the Celtic family.

As for the weak-minded among you: there was never any danger last night. Without profligacy in front of goal, we would have been ahead at the break. Scott Brown learned that two mistakes in quick succession is likely to lead to a goal, while Mikael Lustig satisfied his long-held curiosity as to what would happen if he was the last defender, and instead of closing down an opponent rushing towards goal, he backed off.  It would have been a great learning experience for some of the young players involved.

Rijeka couldn’t lay a glove on Olympiakos last night, while Sevilla only just clung onto their advantage over Istanbul Basaksehir, who were a goal away from qualifying for the group stage, and elevating Celtic to pot 3. Our hopes now lie with Hoffenheim overturning a 1-2 deficit at Liverpool. Pot 4 beckons. Still, I’m not complaining.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

You will also watch the game from the Directors’ Box. In collaboration with this raffle, we are raising money for Mary’s Meals. Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat each school day in a kitchen supported by Celtic Quick News readers. You can donate a minimum of £5 here.

To win, email your MyDonate confirmation to me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer to this question IN THE SUBJECT LINE:

How many Champions League qualifying games have Celtic played in the Astana Arena before last night?*

Other emails with the correct answer will also be considered. Competition closes at 14:00 Thursday afternoon. You need to be able to collect your tickets in Glasgow on Friday. Please ensure you leave reliable contact information on your email. Good luck!

*Failure rate on this question is higher than with any previous competition.  If you know your history… ooft!  It was only four years ago.

Clumps – you sure that was twin peaks? Looked like a training session to me- didn’t spot any green footwear!

  2. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

    True enough Bada.

ML has been terrific for Celtic, also 100% effort and commitment every game.

Anyway regardless of the defensive failings, we scored 3 goals away from home in Europe which is no mean feat.

The statistics show that Celtic more than matched the opposition team.

    HH.

  3. Good to hear folk standing up for Lustig. Imo, our captain is the one most deserving of criticism, if anyone is. He has done us proud (including yesterday’s 1st half) so often but he was posted missing in the 2nd half.

Having said that, when you have to play with an inexperienced CB and a DM, as your twin CBs, then everything is a bonus, imo.

I would still expect Nir Bitton to play in away CL games, provided there are any 2 from Simunovic, Boyata and Sciavtencko (sp?) behind him.

  4. BADA – Lustig has been immense. Last night he was doubled-up on. SHOULD have been in the centre of defence sorting things out with young Ralston dropping into right-back. Same people ripping him are the year-upon-year ones telling us he’s past it. Only focus on his one shortcoming – lack of true pace. Defensively, he’s a rock; multiple interventions yesterday to break up danger, constant talker, fills others with confidence.

Him, Jozo, KT, and A.N.Other – the rock upon which we build our group campaign.

The guy’s a proven, experienced international; precisely the character you need in the CL. He now also seems the acid test for whether you know anything about football or just like bumping your gums with the torch-bearing witch-burners.

  5. Sandman-ML is one of the first names on the team sheet, great to see Ralston coming through,he will get some games this season, but ML will be our first choice RB for at least this season and next IMO

  6. If those having a go at Mikel were Brazil ’70 fans they’d focus on the Italian goal from the final so they could moan about something.

Think it’s just new blinds they bought. If it’s new windaes they need then no doubt Hugh Bonkle fae Dallas will do mates rates for them.

  8. Oh well,it seems its ok to slaughter Broony for having half a bad game,1 out of 50,maybe more, and pick on the other scapegoats, novices in their positions last night, but dont ever ,ever, say a word about Lustig. After all”He gets us”.He was as poor as anyone in the defence last night, and as one with his amount of experience, should have done more to help.Yes he has good games, but i am sorry,I dont think he cuts it in the CL any more.I really dont want to be sitting here in 3 months time saying”I told you so”.It happens to all players. He can still pick a pass, but so could Commons, where is he now.I like Lustig, but I have grave doubts at CL level now.

On the ML debate, I love the guy to bits but this is what I messaged my youngest Bhoy at 17:07 during the game last night:

“Lustig is a feckin tube at times”

    Who isn’t? ;)

  14. The wee mhan had a game last night.

    Shut the front door. 1-1

    Turned the engine on…1-3!!!!!!

Watching back when I came home later……

The 20 min aberration was dramatic but not quite as dramatic and excitable as the radio Shortbread commentators would have had you think.

olivier ntcham In the second half was world class.

    —————————

Correctomundo, a couple of players had a bad day at the office as we all do. Nobody died and it gave us a bit of excitement.

During that period of the second half, when we lost the goals, I thought our players were looking out of it (knackered) due to travelling, time difference and heat. We then seemed to get our second wind and took control of the game again.

I would suggest that sitting in an aeroplane for such a long period is not conducive to playing a football match, not that UEFA give a toss.

  17. TURKEYBHOY

The problem with Lustig is a lack of pace and every now and then when faced with an opponent who has he struggles.

I think Brendan is aware and is being addressed with Ralston.

On Brown who I love I have stated that I feel Brendan was aware that our central military dfield was short of the discipline and patience required at European level and Nt’cham and Kouassi were bought to address.

  18. First, and very vital goal last night – watch the move; Lustig takes the ball under pressure, holds, hooooolds, and then picks a great slider of a pass to Callum, who lays off for Scotty to fire home.

    Sheer class from Lustig.

But he’s pish. of course he is. Because he was isolated for one goal. Applying the same game logic, Scotty Sinclair is pish too becasue he missed a couple of sitters. And as for that Larsson fella, sheesh….

Criticism for a mistake is valid, but some use it as an agenda to crucify. THAT is pish.

I just think the current Celtic squad is almost beyond scapegoatism. and the support should be too- BR has educated us in squad management and how to get the best from players, many of whom were underachieving wth RD. gone SHOULD be those days of screaming at Sammi before he’d even taken the park. Total Hunnism.

  19. Lustig has never had great pace, which makes his reading of the game ,and his opponent exceptional.

  20. So, why don’t Cellic fans empty the park and…..

    get rid of Hawthorne ?

Fellow Cellic fans being criminalized by, club executives….

and still they queue up ? Awfy strange ?

like the PLC have done about the same club issue, with their…..

Some fans have moved on as well, as is evidenced by….

Seems that, Simple Simon drives the bus, whoda funk it ?

Cellic to win Europa League trophy…..it is written….

    ……off-oot.

  21. POG…

I thought the worst bit of bad play was Leigh’s attempt that he skied over the bar,but it happens and he’s still a great player for us.They all make mistakes.

Mikel’s been a regular for us,Swedan and Rosenberg for a decade.I think managers know a bit more than us about players.Big fhella’s ok for me.

And I agree, flying thousands of miles to play a Euro tie isn’t ideal preparation.Especially since the game’s in Asia.

Anywho, job done,we’re where we wanted to be so onwards and upwards.

    HH

  22. Two or three years ago I opined that Mikel Lustig would be comfortable in ANY team in Europe. A couple of weeks ago I commented that he was no longer the player he was. He is STILL a very good player but I feel this could be his last season at the required level.

I think the reason posters on here become aggressive in this and many other ` debates` is because of the black and white positions adopted. ie x was great V x was dreadful ( the latter often based on one or two mistakes made in an entire game).

Taking extreme positions is not , of course , exclusive to CQN. Ask most golfers how they played that day . The most common answer is ” ***** ” with the occasional ” Not bad ” thrown in on a very good day. It would seem to be the default setting in humans to be negative. Survival instinct, I guess.

PS In nearly every game I have seen at Celtic Park in the last year, Scott Brown has been by far the most influential player in our team.

Squabble, squabble…like a load of baldy men squabbling over a hairbrush… :-) I love it!…reminds me of the Stevie Winwood song, ‘Keep on Squabbling’…

  26. JJ-Agree,re Broonie.Pog beat me to it earlier,I thing the travel, heat, bodyclock stuff hit us in the 2nd half, the double substitution gave us a bit more legs at the time.

  27. By the 90th minute of yesterday’s match Astana required 5 (five) – yes, FIVE – goals to go through. Over two legs Celtic utterly horsed – yes, HORSED – Astana.

If that doesn’t thrill you, your thoughts aren’t very good and you should ask for new ones for Christmas.

    Mikael Lustig rules ok…
