Thank you, Celtic, growing the family

That’s the response from Scottish Premiership clubs on notification they will each receive £365k solidarity payment from Uefa for Celtic reaching the Champions League group stage. At the bottom end of the league, that will pay the wages of six members of the squad for a year.  To one and all: You’re welcome.

Further up the table, it could make the difference between being underwater and not needing to seek borrowing. Be in no doubt, this is a great day to go to work at all top flight Scottish clubs. Directors across the country, who keep their clubs afloat with personal loans, would have been on their feet cheering as Scott Sinclair’s opener hit the net – all of them.

I loved the interactive billboard campaign which launched within minutes of full time: “This is how it feels to be in the Champions League”. As a club, we are hitting all the bases right now; opening avenues for the whole of Glasgow, and Scotland, to enjoy and participate in our success. This is how it feels to grow the Celtic family.

As for the weak-minded among you: there was never any danger last night. Without profligacy in front of goal, we would have been ahead at the break. Scott Brown learned that two mistakes in quick succession is likely to lead to a goal, while Mikael Lustig satisfied his long-held curiosity as to what would happen if he was the last defender, and instead of closing down an opponent rushing towards goal, he backed off.  It would have been a great learning experience for some of the young players involved.

Rijeka couldn’t lay a glove on Olympiakos last night, while Sevilla only just clung onto their advantage over Istanbul Basaksehir, who were a goal away from qualifying for the group stage, and elevating Celtic to pot 3. Our hopes now lie with Hoffenheim overturning a 1-2 deficit at Liverpool. Pot 4 beckons. Still, I’m not complaining.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

You will also watch the game from the Directors’ Box. In collaboration with this raffle, we are raising money for Mary’s Meals. Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat each school day in a kitchen supported by Celtic Quick News readers. You can donate a minimum of £5 here.

To win, email your MyDonate confirmation to me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer to this question IN THE SUBJECT LINE:

How many Champions League qualifying games have Celtic played in the Astana Arena before last night?*

Other emails with the correct answer will also be considered. Competition closes at 14:00 Thursday afternoon. You need to be able to collect your tickets in Glasgow on Friday. Please ensure you leave reliable contact information on your email. Good luck!

*Failure rate on this question is higher than with any previous competition.  If you know your history… ooft!  It was only four years ago.

STV News carrying footage of the giant Glasgow billboards, shining green and white joy all ove rthe city.

Can feel the earth beginning to tremble as depressed Huns everywhere finally look up…

The Perma-Rage Apocalypse is upon us.

Pedro – rage…..fixed that for you:))

    Maybe invented a new phrase…?

  2. Fair play to the Sevs for making plans for the cold winter nights with no European football (Or meaningful SPFL football).

How about a night at the Masquerade Ball on Saturday 18th November at a cool £110 a head?

What caught my attention was the Highwayman’s Mask in the advertising.

Some of the first team squad look don’t look too happy at last years Ball and maybe could have kept their masks on :)

This Rangers Charity isn’t at all to be confused with the Trustees of the previous Rangers Charity who fell foul of the Regulator.

Its all gone very very quiet on the Paddy front – where is he – embdy got an update?

  4. INVINCIBLE 'GG on

    Nit picking in overdrive.

So a couple of our usually reliable players made a couple of mistakes last night.

So what was a routine first half turned into a “basketball game.”

So we had an exciting second half.

Had we travelled to Kazakhstan in the first leg and lost 4-3 we would have been ecstatic.

However, since we expected a stroll in the plastic park, we are turning on players.

    Let’s get real.

We had two CBs unfamiliar with each other.

We were playing on a dicey surface.

We were maybe a wee bit complacent at the start of the second half.

We should have expected Astana to throw the kitchen sink at us as they needed to give their fans something to shout about.

We were NEVER, I repeat NEVER, in any danger of elimination.

We are back at the top table for the second year in succession.

    No mean feat.

We can cement our dominance in Scotland, attract better established players, better promising players and we can afford to improve our own facilities at Celtic Park and Lennoxtown.

Has Paul been too shy to mention G. O. D?

haven’t been out and about today to see the billboards. Can anyone tell me where they can be seen around the town centre or east end?

  9. BOB O’ BALDY @ 5:11 PM,

With all due respect, we’ve had folk commenting on how bad Celtic Qualifying for the UCL League is for Scottish Football.

Ewan Murray who is the Scottish Football Correspondent for a National Newspaper declare…

…Another European adventure would be great for Celtic – but not Scottish football

CQN was set up to directly oppose this sort of nonsense.

If it sounds a little triumphant well maybe he just wants to hit home the point.

    Hail Hail

  10. What is the Stars on

Anyone else beginning to think that putting up billboards all over Glasgow gloating about our success is in bad taste.

    No ?

    Just me then?

    Have they not suffered enough!!!!

    All together now….

    NOOOOOO

  11. We can talk about last night’s match until the cows come home.

Anyway that’s now in the past & we have qualified for the CL

Group Stages however & howcome can a football Club based

in Asia be part of a European football competition that does

not make sense question on a postcard please to UEFA or is

it because they are a Banked rolled Club being allowed in

said competition by UEFA yeah that sounds about right on

the money as for the Bhoys getting through okay there was

defensive frailties in our Defence by playing players out of

position due to our normal Defenders unavailable due to

injuries/sidelined & for about twenty odd minutes in the

second half we looked lethargic what was the the

Temperature over there? I bet you it was very warm indeed.

& an eight hour flight from Glasgow on Sunday would indeed

take its toll yeah signs of Jet Lag kicking in does not help

one’s concentration over a full 95 minutes of a very important

match with a lot @ stake put it this way Astana FC had nothing

to lose by having a go @ us in the second half but that is now

all bye de bye because we managed to steady the Bhoys Ship

& progress via Mr Oliver Nicham man of the match for the Bhoys

& is turning out to be a very good acquisition to our Club & a

fine executed goal by super Leigh so @ the end of said two

Matches between the Bhoys & Astana FC the aggregation

over both matches read The Bhoys 8 Goals Astana FC 4 Goals

4-Nil to the Bhoys as mentioned by previous posts even if we

only won the first Leg @ CP 1-Nil we would have still progressed

into the CL Group Stages so a big well done to Brendan Rodgers

All The Players & Backroom Staff for bringing CL Group Stage

Football to CP for another Season 2017/2018 past six potential

Banana skin fixtures which reads 4 wins one draw & one defeat

Goals For 15, Goals Against 4 total 11 Goals + & out of 18 maximum

points (6 Matches 3 points for a win 1 for a draw Zero for a lost)

We collected 13 points because we drew with Rosenborg @ CP

& lost to Astana FC in Kazakhstan the new European Country

Aye right. I’m personally looking forward to @ least three big

European nights @ CP & hopefully if we can get a decent Group

draw for a pleasant change please (No Barcelona) we have played

them nearly every time we qualify for the CL Group Stages then

hopefully we will have European Football after Christmas providing

we don’t get shafted into the Group of Death it’s called give us a

break & I hope Lady luck is smiling with us for a change as regards

to said draw which is being screened live on BT Sport tomorrow

afternoon around 4:30pm I believe anyway folks I bid you all a

pleasant Evening & enjoy what lays ahead (come-on-you-bhoys-

  12. The billboards are as much to do with commercial profile of the champs as it is with sticking two fingers up at sevco.

Who’s your brand going to look good on?

  13. 8.4 we won.

    Just magic.

The billboards look fabulous, does anyone know how long they will be there for.

Hopefully at least until tomorrow, I will make a small detour to see the one above central station.

These are the good times, sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of that.

They needed five to get to extra time six to win outright

    By halftime they needed seven

With 20 mins to go they needed three

By the end they needed to score five

    Isnt that where we started

Okay so Kazakhstan has part of a European River flowing through it.

Well, due to where it’s located within Planet Earth I hope we avoid

Teams from there for a while due to spending loads of hours

traveling on a city in the sky device entitled an Airplane & having

to play on 4G dodgy playing surfaces & of course the heat over

there in a Tropical climate yeah it’s a case of thanks but no thanks

hopefully we can avoid said location for the foreseeable future

Well done Celts last night, it’s a great feeling to have ticked off the Champions League Group target – 42 champions reduced to five.

I think Pot 1 being champions now lends itself to Pot 2 teams being the big spenders, in seasons to come, in order to overcome the team which finished above them in the respective leagues. Ever decreasing circles, UEFA?

    Celtic forever.
