Thank you, Celtic, growing the family

That’s the response from Scottish Premiership clubs on notification they will each receive £365k solidarity payment from Uefa for Celtic reaching the Champions League group stage. At the bottom end of the league, that will pay the wages of six members of the squad for a year.  To one and all: You’re welcome.

Further up the table, it could make the difference between being underwater and not needing to seek borrowing. Be in no doubt, this is a great day to go to work at all top flight Scottish clubs. Directors across the country, who keep their clubs afloat with personal loans, would have been on their feet cheering as Scott Sinclair’s opener hit the net – all of them.

I loved the interactive billboard campaign which launched within minutes of full time: “This is how it feels to be in the Champions League”. As a club, we are hitting all the bases right now; opening avenues for the whole of Glasgow, and Scotland, to enjoy and participate in our success. This is how it feels to grow the Celtic family.

As for the weak-minded among you: there was never any danger last night. Without profligacy in front of goal, we would have been ahead at the break. Scott Brown learned that two mistakes in quick succession is likely to lead to a goal, while Mikael Lustig satisfied his long-held curiosity as to what would happen if he was the last defender, and instead of closing down an opponent rushing towards goal, he backed off.  It would have been a great learning experience for some of the young players involved.

Rijeka couldn’t lay a glove on Olympiakos last night, while Sevilla only just clung onto their advantage over Istanbul Basaksehir, who were a goal away from qualifying for the group stage, and elevating Celtic to pot 3. Our hopes now lie with Hoffenheim overturning a 1-2 deficit at Liverpool. Pot 4 beckons. Still, I’m not complaining.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

You will also watch the game from the Directors’ Box. In collaboration with this raffle, we are raising money for Mary’s Meals. Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat each school day in a kitchen supported by Celtic Quick News readers. You can donate a minimum of £5 here.

To win, email your MyDonate confirmation to me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer to this question IN THE SUBJECT LINE:

How many Champions League qualifying games have Celtic played in the Astana Arena before last night?*

Other emails with the correct answer will also be considered. Competition closes at 14:00 Thursday afternoon. You need to be able to collect your tickets in Glasgow on Friday. Please ensure you leave reliable contact information on your email. Good luck!

*Failure rate on this question is higher than with any previous competition.  If you know your history… ooft!  It was only four years ago.

  1. Astana and Celtic were more than pleased with last night’s result. Astana restored some of their pride after being blitzed at Celtic Park and held onto their excellent home record in Europe although Celtic should have won this game in the first half.

Great result for Celtic when one considers that Roberts, Dembele, Jozo and Boyata and now that Armstrong’s contract problems are resolved will be back to full strength for the group stage. We may also possibly see Brendan add a couple of additions to the squad in the coming days. Plenty to look forward to.

  3. I see the Imperial Bears are none too impressed by the plans to bring teachers over from Ireland to assist in Scotland (where, there is a shortage of teachers for Catholic primary schools, in rural areas.)

Oh well, something else for them to moan about. No surprises…

  4. Just read that account of the meeting with Doncaster and McKenzie, these two are covering their arses big time, are squirming at times when a question is led that might throw their stories out and you can sense that all is not right and proper with this, they know it, the people at the meeting know it, many fans know it clubs are likely to know but WHO is going to do something about this and hold people to account and get rid of those who should not be in football?

Interesting part of the meeting with Doncaster and McKenzie …

They were also asked about the new club issue. RM said they were same club because ultimately they (the SPFL) wrote the rules.

So what Head of UEFA Club Licensing and Company Law state doesn’t count then ?

We’ll see how that stands up under judicial scrutiny !

Liverpool 2 up (4-1 agg) so Pot 4 it is tomorrow. Bring it on ….

  7. Anyone think the football authorities here would prevent David Murray from getting involved in football again if he was inclined to do so?

  8. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

I work in Cowcaddens and go down Renfield Street on my way home.

I had the great pleaure of seeing the Lisbon Lions advert on the roof of Central Station overlooking Union Street for the week beginning 22/5/17 . It was a wonderful sight , very pleasing on the eye.

We did our job last night with an understrength team, which was very pleasing.

A central defender , Patrick and a centre forward on loan , would be nice , over the next 8 days .

We might describe brother Pedro as eccentric rather than ” loony”. Bit classier:))))))

Or are you thinking Danny Ings if we don’t draw Liverpool tomorrow?

  11. Thoroughly enjoying the Liverpool v Hoffenheim game. Great attacking football from both teams. Get a feeling it’s not over yet. Liverpool up 3-1 on the night, 5-2 on aggregate. I expect more goals.

  12. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Lennybhoy, possibly City are waiting on the Champions League draw before a decision is made whether we get Patrick on loan or permanently.

My preference is a permanent deal for Patrick

  13. Not often MWD puts up a sensible post…)

Over a two leg affair we won 8-4, we played with a makeshift defence. Yes pick out who made the mistakes, we all make them but to berate a Player, any Player who has served us well and contributed along with the Manager to where we are today…I cannot understand it.

Thank you Bhoys and thank you Brendan…Invincibles and UCL qualifiers, again.

    Keep the Faith!

The problem with Lustig is a lack of pace and every now and then when faced with an opponent who has he struggles.

I think Brendan is aware and is being addressed with Ralston.

On Brown who I love I have stated that I feel Brendan was aware that our central military dfield was short of the discipline and patience required at European level and Nt’cham and Kouassi were bought to address.

That has always been Mikels problem, and its getting worse.Last season at Ibrox,Mc Kay roasted him.watching Liverpool tonight,I cant even begin to think what Mane will do to him.People saying,he made a great pass, yes,he does that regular,it does not make him faster at defending. Its always the same on here when you mention faults with one of their favourites. No one is saying he is a bad player.he has been a great servant for us,but IMHO,I think his best days are behind him.Fine for the SPFL,we need better for CL.

No definite information but we want a permanent deal, worse case it will be a loan.
