Thank you, Celtic, growing the family

That’s the response from Scottish Premiership clubs on notification they will each receive £365k solidarity payment from Uefa for Celtic reaching the Champions League group stage. At the bottom end of the league, that will pay the wages of six members of the squad for a year.  To one and all: You’re welcome.

Further up the table, it could make the difference between being underwater and not needing to seek borrowing. Be in no doubt, this is a great day to go to work at all top flight Scottish clubs. Directors across the country, who keep their clubs afloat with personal loans, would have been on their feet cheering as Scott Sinclair’s opener hit the net – all of them.

I loved the interactive billboard campaign which launched within minutes of full time: “This is how it feels to be in the Champions League”. As a club, we are hitting all the bases right now; opening avenues for the whole of Glasgow, and Scotland, to enjoy and participate in our success. This is how it feels to grow the Celtic family.

As for the weak-minded among you: there was never any danger last night. Without profligacy in front of goal, we would have been ahead at the break. Scott Brown learned that two mistakes in quick succession is likely to lead to a goal, while Mikael Lustig satisfied his long-held curiosity as to what would happen if he was the last defender, and instead of closing down an opponent rushing towards goal, he backed off.  It would have been a great learning experience for some of the young players involved.

Rijeka couldn’t lay a glove on Olympiakos last night, while Sevilla only just clung onto their advantage over Istanbul Basaksehir, who were a goal away from qualifying for the group stage, and elevating Celtic to pot 3. Our hopes now lie with Hoffenheim overturning a 1-2 deficit at Liverpool. Pot 4 beckons. Still, I’m not complaining.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

You will also watch the game from the Directors’ Box. In collaboration with this raffle, we are raising money for Mary’s Meals. Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat each school day in a kitchen supported by Celtic Quick News readers. You can donate a minimum of £5 here.

To win, email your MyDonate confirmation to me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer to this question IN THE SUBJECT LINE:

How many Champions League qualifying games have Celtic played in the Astana Arena before last night?*

Other emails with the correct answer will also be considered. Competition closes at 14:00 Thursday afternoon. You need to be able to collect your tickets in Glasgow on Friday. Please ensure you leave reliable contact information on your email. Good luck!

*Failure rate on this question is higher than with any previous competition.  If you know your history… ooft!  It was only four years ago.

I’ll settle for Monaco, Dortmund and Spurs.

Pot 4 looking strong. A few of these teams more than capable of making the Europa.

  2. Embra – just noted the phrase ‘in the competitions’

does that exclude Dons, St J and manky mob who were all in a competition

  3. I just had a look at the clubs in Pot 2, if Celtic draw Real Madrid we will play against one of the following PSG Dortmund Man City Man Utd or Porto from Pot 2.Exciting ties.

  5. I watched the first half in a pub in Dundalk while I waited on my car to be fixed. Disappointed we conceded to an og but delighted we equalised to go in all square at ht.

Went back to the garage to pick up my car and from there dash to my bro’s house to catch second half. Car wasn’t ready though and owner tells me the score is 3-1. Delighted I was. Until I realised it was in Astana’s favour.

    In Brendan we trust.

Finally get car and as I make my way to my Bro’s house I get a text: 4-1.

    Holy F¥>k:-)

Decide to head home as thunder storms brewing (literally and emotionally) and get two more texts as I race down the M1.

    Couldn’t read them, honest:-)

But this is what it means to be CELTIC.

  6. Alan Stubbs believes former club Celtic need to improve defensively in Europe and says Kieran Tierney is their “only top-class defender”.

    ——-

Embarrassing comment. Complete overreaction across the board to a poor defensive display last night. Simunovic and Boyata are good enough to play in the CL. And we are about to sign Coetzee. What exactly does Stubbs expect us to do? Does he want us to splash £40m on three defenders? Has he any awareness of the situation and the reality we face. How guys like him make a living from the game is beyond me.

  7. embramike says ” Yer team’s deid…Beat it!” on

With 5 English clubs being kept apart in the 8 groups more than likely we’ll get 1 of them.

If we draw Liverpool should be a few goals in those ties as we went through 8-4 and they went through 6-3. Worth a Greater than 2-5 goals I think !

Some crazy Pot 1 teams though – Spartak Moscow have a coefficient of just 18.606, the 3rd lowest of all 32 teams, but go into Pot 1 by default as Russian champions, while CSKA Moscow are in Pot 4 with a coefficient of 39.606.

Roll on tomorrow when all the anticipation and guess work is over – just delighted to be there !

An agreement on terms will have to be followed up by the travel up from S Africa for the medical to be undertaken (and he picked up a wee hammy in his last game I believe) and of course the work permit, which shouldn’t be too much of a problem based on his International appearances.

All takes time to get the paperwork done before official announcement.

Charlie Nicholas grates me with his lack of backing and standing up for us to please Sky .

That penalty he missed in the Neuchatel game was embarrasing.

He made a comment last season that he does not tow the Celtic party line like our other ex players doing media work trying to explain his attitude to us . Obviously he has not heard Walker, Bonner or McLeod to name a few.

  24. Goooood Evening CQN

    Big day tomorrow:-)

Now I have just read the minutes from Celtic underground meeting with ND and RMcK, is it just me who can’t follow FtSPFL, but how come after ND announcing that the FtSPFL agreed to a Judicial Review, that the same FtSPFL have still to write to FtSFA to request such ???

Celtic, can you not see what is going on here ? Or are you happy with this deflection of duties ?

Strip the trophies, and clear out the Knuckle crunchers form running Scottish Football

And let’s not forget this Priority for many fans

  25. Another thing ( I must be getting crabitter with age :-))

Just reading on BBC about “free Scoring Liverpool” who scored 6 goals in total

Yet Celtic struggled with 8 in yesterday’s headlines

    So FtBBC as well
