That’s not an outbreak of Tourettes you hear

715

No, that’s not an outbreak of Tourettes across small patches in the west of Scotland, it is the long-suffering Newco fans realisation that their board have been breathtakingly incompetent in their attempts to recruit a manager.

In many respects, briefing the media ahead of their two games against Aberdeen and an AGM that Derek McInnes would be installed at Ibrox this week, had the desired effect. The players were sufficiently motivated to out-perform Aberdeen, while Dave King got through the AGM on a nod and a wink. The falsehood of the assertion, however, will surely come at a cost. King will hope that memories fade before he has to face fans again in 51 weeks.

My immediate reaction when I read the ridiculous statement from Newco last night was that their hilarious PR system was at the keyboard while jaked. They spend six weeks targeting McInnes, then, after he rejected them, claimed this was evidence he was not up to the job.

An obscure phrase was used, “concomitant risk”, instead of the more common “associated risk”. There’s a fair bit of research into why people unnecessarily use complex and obscure words instead of simpler alternatives. None of it is flattering.

I assumed the statement was the work of Newco’s shamlessly-brilliant PR operation, but a studious CQN’er emailed this clip of Dave King’s AGM speech last year.

4 minutes 29 seconds in he states they should: “run an operating deficit, without a concomitant event risk that could lead to a repeat of the last few years”. Last night’s statement has Dave’s tones all over it.  Fewer and fewer people compliment the emperor on his new outfit.

A big thanks to teams two and three in the league, who have damaged their positions and/or humiliated themselves, while Celtic have extended their lead at the top of the table.

If it does, I may even overlook my displeasure with the Board, and come over for a proper visit to Celtic Park.

    Wee Sally.

  13. Apologies if this has already been shared.

Tom English’s piece on that Statement

“At 272 words, the Rangers statement of Thursday night was brief compared to some of their bloated efforts of the past, but it will still go down as an extraordinary thing that somehow managed to make an already bad situation even worse.

In explaining why they failed to secure Derek McInnes as their new manager – part of the statement was a thinly-veiled attempt to portray him as being too weak to take on the job – the Ibrox board resorted to “patronising”, “spiteful” and “undignified” language that was “unbecoming of Rangers”.

Those are not the remarks of a pundit, or a journalist, or a fan from another club, they are plucked from a Rangers heartland, from the Bearpit, the comments section of the most thunderous of all Rangers supporters’ forums, Follow Follow.

The statement was described as “a shambles”, “disrespectful”, “awful”, “unnecessary”, “condescending drivel”, “embarrassing and childish” and “absolute garbage.”

‘I wasn’t prepared to walk away’ – McInnes

Rangers job would be hard to turn down – Murty

Dons fans ‘must forgive and forget’

The board, by turns, were depicted as “not fit for purpose”, “lacking in class”, “farcical” and “massively failing the support”. One contributor said: “Amazingly, there seems to be no end to our uselessness.” Others called for the board to be sacked.

In among the outrage, there was, of course, a championing of those in power at Ibrox and backing for every word contained in their statement, but the majority appeared mortified by it. Time and again, the same sentiment arose: ‘This kind of stuff should be beneath us’.

Some Rangers fans would appear to be arriving – if they have not already arrived – at the point where the goodwill is going, or has gone, where the gratitude of a section of the fans towards chairman Dave King and his team for ousting the old guard has become exhausted.

Rangers caretaker Graeme Murty and Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes

Graeme Murty will remain Rangers caretaker after the failed approach for McInnes

There comes a time when being better than the Easdale brothers is not enough anymore. The tortured Mark Warburton saga, followed by the expensive catastrophe of Pedro Caixinha, followed by the protracted and failed pursuit of McInnes, has caused significant reputational damage to this Rangers board. This is not outsiders talking. It’s their own people.

There was no need for such a soap opera. When Caixinha was sacked, McInnes was immediately identified by Rangers as their number one target.

They looked around to see who else was there, as they’re obliged to do in the interests of the club. They returned to McInnes. Thought about it again. And thought about it some more.

All of that soul-searching, in the wake of their blunder with Caixinha, was understandable, but it should have been over weeks ago. Rangers’ loss to Hamilton at Ibrox on 18 November really ought to have been the trigger for action. They’d had more than enough time to get their ducks in a row by then.

From Caixinha’s sacking, Rangers took 40 days to make official contact with Aberdeen – and then got knocked back. What does that say about the effectiveness of this board? And what does the rejection from McInnes do to their prospects of landing a manager of substance? Surely the first questions their next target will ask are, ‘Why did McInnes turn it down? What is it about the club that he didn’t like the look of?’

In turning down Rangers’ approach, he has also made it harder for them to secure a manager with the kind of track record they require.”

  14. I hope we get an eastern European team in the Europa; one of the finest away displays I saw was the Burton/Taylor game where we won 2-1 in Budapest, it was a 4:00 pm ko so was televised live.

The Magyars had beaten Valencia home and away in the previous round so we knew they were a good side. We had a fairly young side that night with the Wee Mhan, Dixie and big Cairney missing and 5 of the Quality Street gang in the team. Nae recognised centre with the Buzz Bomb and wee Skip tae ma Lou up front tae run them ragged.

2 weeks later and they are a different side, a couple of more weeks under their belt after the winter break. They took the lead early doors tae tie the match but we still had the away goal advantage.

The Wee Mhan had played in a friendly at Kilbowie Park on the Monday in an effort to prove is fitness, I was at that game and the Fife Beckenbauer also played, stand out incidentally was a young Pat McCluskey, the latter was in the side but Jinky sat on the bench.

I for some reason, mibbees crowd congestion as it was a sell out crowd, was in the old enclosure that night; we were under the cosh for most of the first half but regained our composure in the 2nd. About 10 minutes intae the half and Brogie goes down again within minutes, there’s a hush from the crowd as Bob Rooney signals tae the bench, although we are defending a lead and Tid who can play in defence is a sub the next thing the Wee Mhan is limbering up on the touchline and a chorus of “we’ve got Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Johnstone on the wing” starts, by the time he discards his trackie its in full crescendo, the whole ground is chanting it, even the prawn sandwich stand lol behind me.

He was in blistering form even though the Hungarians targeted him, and 10 minutes later wee Skip Tae equalises. We knew then we were through, however, on leaving the ground and the next day in work the consensus was we wouldnae like tae meet them in earlier rounds.

Well guess what we did the following season, after they took another early lead we won 2-1 at home thanks tae a 2nd half double fae King Kenny only tae get gubbed in the 2nd leg going 3 down in the 1st half. This match, again a 4:00 pm ko, was also supposed tae be televised live but a breakdown in the transmission meant there was only radio coverage where a grim Joe McBride in the studio couldnae believe what transpired. I was not surprised.

Again the winter break caught up with Ujpest and they lost out tae eventual finalists Juve in the next round on away goals after doing the hard bit and tying 0-0 in Turin. We’ve all been there.

  16. See sevco are building a pitch for youth development,in Auchenhowie, and a stand to be.built for there supporters, with the help from the local council,I have said this about the redevelopment of Barrow field, somebody posted a couple of months ago that Celtic were looking into doing something about Barrowfield

  17. “In turning down Rangers’ approach, he has also made it harder for them to secure a manager with the kind of track record they require.”

And there ye have it Mr English, the kinda shite that passes for fitbaw journalism in Scotland.

They haven’t had one manager with a track record, not one, McCoist, Mullet, The Baldy Choob, Admiral Warburton and Pedro the mad cashbox, couldnae make a manager out of all of them in a cement mixer.

The fantasy continues from the pen of Mr Barking English, a manager with a track record, give him no budget and land him with a bloated squad of bandits on the run from various Latin American countries:))

Dream on Tom ya complete zoomer, it’s Murty the Celtic Supporter and fine ye know it:))

    Agree with you re BSR.

The man is in the form of his life, keeping us entertained for free while all the local based oul’ yins are supping their Sweet Stouts in the BV!! : > )

  19. My take on the McInnes situation is this:

    * After Celtic Brother Number One Pedro was bulleted, Sevco approached McInnes’ agent. He was interested. He waited for a formal approach.

    * Sevco, realising they had no cash to make a formal approach, and an AGM to navigate, started a PR war to create the illusion of inevitability that McInnes would be appointed, hoping this would harangue Aberdeen into accepting the inevitable.

    * McInnes and his agent start to get annoyed.

    * Sevco notify Aberdeen of their intention to make a formal approach, and are told: “That’ll be 800k. Plus more for his Timmy assistant.”

    * Sevco, still without 800k, hint to McInnes’ agent that his client might want to engineer his own departure and will be “looked after” later (*taps nose)

    * McInnes, by now thoroughly p!££%d off, has a heart to heart with Milne who points out the dangers of joining a club/company that don’t even have the spare change needed to talk to him.

    * McInnes agrees, and stays with Dons.

    * Sevco, realising how damaging the truth would be to their “pure massive club” self-image, concoct a ridiculous statement which none too subtly hints that McInnes doesn’t have the bottle for Sevco/Gers.

Where they go now is anyone’s guess, but this whole sorry episode is a case-study in the fantasy that the SMSM have created around Sevco. But we’re still waiting for the scene at the end of the Wizard of Oz, when the truth is revealed.
