The 18-year-olds you have

215

How much success is inbuilt talent, how much is application and how much is development at key times?

The latter is crucial. International youth teams are filled with teens who make no impact on the game, as the inbuilt that earned them a youth cap withers, while others grow through their early adult years.

It’s not about the 18-years-olds you have, it’s what you do with the 18-year-olds you have.

  1. It does show how much EPL teams are prepared to spend on promising 18 year olds. £40m for kid with one season in the championship

  2. SFtBs @ 3:49, 3:59 PM,

You are spot on, this thing has been happening since Willie McStay was the last manager of Celtic Reserves fifteen years ago.

Cynics would say a heavy dollop of jobs for the bhoys….

My thoughts is, they may well have a point, although most agree, to keep tradition, values and celture on the rails an element of this will always be needed.

Also, my belief is the ghuys are there on merit

Most agree, even his critics, that BR could pull his staff together, his various tenure with Chris Davies as his right hand man has proven that.

So my belief is they’ve earned their shot and my sincere hope is they take it…

This is Brendan’s season, we can speculate what went on between late June’s OpTIMism and January’s December’s doldrums…

But we hot four points in the UCL, we got a double and we are set to go…

So certainly the hope is we can have a less polarised debate on the heresay and a more robust one on the fitbaw…

    Hail Hail

  3. CELTIC40ME @ 3:56 PM,

So Ange achieved all this despite there being no established pathway? But Brendan did very little despite the change over the couple of seasons?

We are still talking about player development aren’t we!?

So could you let me know “ALL” that Ange achieved there, at a complete loss myself…

Also it was Ange that had a couple of seasons and Brendan that has had one.

    Hail Hail

  4. Chairbhoy

“Cynics would say a heavy dollop of jobs for the bhoys….”

    ————————

If they ignored the fact that neither Tommy McIntyre nor Stephen Frail were actually previous Bhoys, they could.

And John Kennedy, as a genuine Bhoy, did so badly he got promoted in this system and denounced by those in the know as a mere layer of cones.

  5. It suggests Ange is there for the long haul, as you’d expect, he’s investing in the future. Since he’s been there all the players they’ve sold or moved on are players over the age of 27 and spent €320m on a couple of 26 years olds a bunch of players in their early twenties.

11 players under the age of 26 for €320m. Only 27 year old Timo Werner on loan older than that.

  6. i personally dont know a single current celtic employee.

i do know anytime i listen to any podcast about the actual organisation, everyone within football thinks John Kennedy is an excellent coach, great at all levels of understanding poeple and process.

I also hear that the “jobs for the bhoys” actually brings forward highly qualified individuals in their chosen field.

Sure you learn and study the game while you are a player, but that doesnt necessarily teach you business, or people management , or performance cycles or indeed how to lay out the cones.

I was really interested in two recent interviews with Aiden McGeady, stating he has never worked as hard as he is doing now to submit a dissertation for a sports science and business degree.

He also says, Broony the manager is a very different proposition than Broony the player, but he is still the same. Only different.

I dont like that the whole structure is written off by people as just “jobs for the bhoys”.

Intelligence of these people is ignored. Qualifications, degrees, education football experience ignored.

iBrendan didnt bring any of his former staff with him , did he ?

He didnt just settle on JK, he made a point that JK is so good he tried to take him away.

Transfers eh, the close season, it is a real stress point for fans. Why cant celtic just do what the fans want. and faster.

  7. The lead article is not decided by me, though it seems rather incongruous to be discussing 18 year old prospects whilst having Scott Bain as our current #1 goalkeeping option.

  8. If Ange doesnt start with a long unbeated run and something special in Europe then shoogly nail time will be upon him.

The Spurs supporters online and on their calls in where over the hineymoon by the timme the season really did peter out for them.

  9. CHAIRBHOY on 12TH JULY 2024 5:10 PM

In Anges first season. All 22 or under (but without the famous pathway being in place)

    Liam Scales (22) – 13 appearances

    Dane Murray (18) – 2

    Antony Ralston (22) – 47

    Stephen Welsh (21) – 24

    David Turnbull (22) – 42

    Jota (22) – 40

    Mikey Johnston (22) – 20

    Karamoko (18) – 2

    Liel Abada (19) – 50

    Joey Dawson (18) – 1

    Owen Moffat (19) – 3

    Ben Doak (18) – 2

    Adam Montgomery (18) – 18

He bought Abada, Scales, Jota and O’Riley and played them enough for them to be first team players and then be worth a ton more than we paid for them.

That is some line up when you see it on paper.

You also have to evaluate and praise the attacking entertaining football he also endorsed.

    Winning with style.

I see Liel Abada at 19. I dont want to go over old ground on why he left, however if circumstances were different im sure he would have progressed to be an absolute superstar.

It was a lot for a young man a long way from home to deal with – that sort of thing goes right to the core of every Israeli’s psyche. He always struck me as someone who needed careful handling, the right sort of manager to get the best out of him.

But his big game mentality marked him out as something special, its a shame we didnt see what he was really capable of.

  16. I see on the Celtic website that we have given nine Academy players professional contracts. It is encouraging that somebody sees and values their potential. Hopefully they realise that they are beginning their career as paid footballers, and try and push on from here. Though not a big fan of the Academy system, the fact is ours has recently produced a number of players, Doak, Vata and now Kelly who we felt had a future at Celtic, but which they turned down. Time will tell if they and their agents have made the right decisions at the right time, or are chasing rainbows.

However they need to play.to progress. You’re old enough if You’re good enough.

As a club we have some choices to be made to give said youngsters game time.

Naturally our main focus should be on the league and Europe. However the domestic cups could and possibly should be the platform to give these youngsters game time.

I have had numerous discussions about this for many years.

    HH.

  21. CELTIC40ME @ 5:40 PM,

As usual we have a scatter gun approach and an oddball look at Celtic Youth development and it’s pathway.

    Liam Scales (22) – 13 appearances

Ange helping out Liam Scales development more than Brendan Rodgers….

Even by your myopic standards thats a stab in the dark.

Dane Murray (18) – 2, poor lad has had a horrendous couple of years out with injury, back playing last week and instantly looking the part, we all hope the bhoy fulfills his potential.

Let’s get real though, Ange did not develop Dane into a first team player.

    Antony Ralston (22) – 47

Did great under Ange, started his first ream development under Brendan, was shelved by Lenny and resurrected under Ange.

A real feather in the cap of all involved

Stephen Welsh (21) – 24 A Celtic stalwart, the court of public opinion suggests the jury is out on Stephen but it was great to see both Ange and Brendan give him a chance, he was hugely honoured to wear the Captain’s armband t’uther night

David Turnbull (22) – 42 Motherwell development player, never reached the heights his potential suggested but I’m sure we hope the lad excels in the English tiers.

Jota (22) – 40 A six million pound signing and a product of the Benfica “Dream Factory” wonderful couple of seasons at Celtic but definitely “Made in Benfica”

Mikey Johnston (22) – 20 Mikey the enigma, Ange was certainly a little kinder to the bhoy than Lenny, yet he seems to be coming of age under Brendan.

No doubt a good future in football, the 64 thousand dollar question is where

Karamoko (18) – 2 Not at all sure where the success story is with Karamoko, normally a poster bhoy for the opposite – however coming good under Blackpool, if it does work out for him, and we hope it does, no Celtic manager is taking the credit for that one.

Liel Abada (19) – 50 Hardly a poster bhoy for Celtic Academy, or the green brigade… but a great advert that shows moneyball done properly can work and work very well

Joey Dawson (18) – 1 Is a great example of an initiative of the Celtic Academy, like Bosun Lawal was signed as a “B” team player with a view of making the first team, we even have a bhoy over from Australia.

Again, not a first team player and we hope Joey pushes on and realises his full potential

Owen Moffat (19) – 3 Another head scratcher, not only is Owen not a first team player, he isn’t a Celtic player – again he’s wished all the best but hardly a great advert for Celtic Youth development

Ben Doak (18) – 2 Not sure anyone at Celtic, let alone Ange will be patting themselves on the back as regards Ben – he’s a Liverpool player dontcha kno’

Adam Montgomery (18) – 18 Again a player whose development has been a bit stop start for a few reasons including injuries, not a first team player though.

Yes, couldn’t understand your point earlier now totally confused.

The only academy player that Ange propelked to another level as a first team player is Tony Ralston.

To be fair to Ange, he had little interest and little mandate there.

His tenure will be remembered fondly for many things, Celtic Academy Development won’t be one though.

All being well we can revisit next season and see how Brendan is doing with two seasons under HIS belt

    Hail Hail

  22. i am the opposite, only long unbroken appearances leads to development and experience.

Ange gave Ben the okay doakie, a route forward, turned it down

Think Brendan got the impression that Vata was not committed, couldn’t risk his attitude

Likewise with Danny Bhoy, he was given game time at eighteen and now offered a new contract which he has turned down. I dont fault ambition, but a chance to establish thmselves at Celtic FC is a great opportunity by any standards. Good luck to the new intake.
