The 18-year-olds you have

215

How much success is inbuilt talent, how much is application and how much is development at key times?

The latter is crucial. International youth teams are filled with teens who make no impact on the game, as the inbuilt that earned them a youth cap withers, while others grow through their early adult years.

It’s not about the 18-years-olds you have, it’s what you do with the 18-year-olds you have.

  1. Not physically durable? He made nearly 50 appearances all told and didn’t miss a single training session, according to Critchley. Not versatile? The former winger spent much of the season playing centre midfield in a 3-5-2. Not big or strong enough? Dembele has grown and filled out a little, but it’s more a case of making intelligent adaptations to his game that render his size irrelevant.

He’s a little star! Celtic youngster Karamoko Dembele makes Under 20s debut aged just 13

    article image

Look up the new compilations of him on YouTube and you’ll see him repeatedly receiving the ball in tight spaces and gliding through attempts to barge him off it. What is also apparent is his ability to deliver a wicked set-piece, which is where many of his assists came from.

‘He’s got a unique ability to twist and turn and receive the ball under pressure, to take the ball when he’s marked and eliminate defenders,’ says Critchley, who worked alongside Rodgers during a long spell coaching at Liverpool’s academy and later served as Steven Gerrard’s assistant at Aston Villa.

‘He’s got a low centre of gravity and can just take defenders out the game in a split second. We slightly adjusted his position during the season just to give him that freedom, because teams started putting together plans to stop him, putting men on him and things like that.

‘He played off the front for us, through the middle, slightly wider, and, towards the end, as an attacking midfielder in a three-man midfield. He’s fantastic to work with, because he just absolutely loves football. You’d turn around after training and he’d be on his own, dribbling, practising shooting and free-kicks, flicking the ball up, juggling… he just always wants to learn and improve.

‘He was the standout performer for us, he won pretty much all of our awards.’

  2. “Ange helping out Liam Scales development more than Brendan Rodgers….

Even by your myopic standards thats a stab in the dark.”

You’re arguing with yourself here. I didnt say he did. He’s played his part, though, by giving him meaningful minutes in the first team not long after he arrived as a raw 22 year old from the LOI. Signed him, played him, loaned him out to Aberdeen to develop. Seems like a sensible plan that has worked out with help from Brendan and a bit of good luck.

“Yes, couldn’t understand your point earlier now totally confused.”

    So I see.

“As usual we have a scatter gun approach and an oddball look at Celtic Youth development and it’s pathway:

    How is it oddball?

  3. Whats oddball about suggesting that giving lots of young players meaningful minutes is a the correct pathway for player development?

Doesnt it make more sense than not?

  4. he’s an oddball BD – wtf was he doing

    – you won

    – well done , take the plaudits

    – get off the court

  5. !!Bada Bing!! on

Interesting to see a few staunch defenders, coming round to realise the transfer policy, and any kind of forward planning is shite.

  6. Ange gave 9 Academy graduates aged 22 or under 120 games in his first season.

    That is development at work

Maybe they’re all better off not playing?

  7. So our development is shite

Our home grown players are shite

And our transfer policy is shite.

    Howdy fholks!

Not posted for a while, but been lurking in the background.

Started my new job seven weeks ago after nearly a year out with mental health struggles.

Job is tough, but loving being back around people on a daily basis. As I had isolated myself from doing very much with anyone due to anxiety.

Some very dark times in the previous 12 months, but started a light dose of medication and have seen unbelievable improvements.

This place and going to watch the hoops games in Fitzgerald’s in Liverpool kept my spirits up.

Have to say as well that my missus has been unbelievable throughout and am lucky to have her.

If anyone is struggling with mental health, please seek professional help and go on medication if suggested (which I was totally against), it is sometimes the wee boost you need to get you back to yourself.

Great to see you all posting (not so much the bickering) but it wouldn’t be a cracking Celtic forum if we didn’t have differing opinions. It’s what makes this place special.

Aipple, hope you, Texas Tim etc lap up the hoops on the US tour and look forward to catching up with some peeps from here next season when I’m back up the road.

Out for a bite to eat and will get some tunes posted when am back in.

    Hail hail!

    Let’s hope we sign some players soon. 😃👍 ⚽️ 🇮🇪 🍀

  11. Brilliant to see the GOAT prevail at the tennis.

Sticking it up the cheating bitter little Englanders.

Huge credit for achieving this after knee surgery only 4 weeks pre tournament.

Most of those pathetic jealous detractors are not fit to lace his Dunlop red flash trainers.

Tennis genius might not win it on Sunday but he will never be overtaken as GOAT.

Seems we are also pretty shite at losing lots of domestic trophies.

But we are not shite at making up stories to show how bad we are with absolutely zero factual evidence …… but hey let’s dance the tune of the MSM to bring us down to the level of the other lot.

No way do I believe you are as thick as your reply at 5.40 indicates. Not possible to mix the two themes of Celtic secrecy surrounding transfers, and Spurs, and other clubs publicly naming the players they are trying to bring in,with your take on the post.
