The 29 day resurrection, Same old Alloa

736

Yesterday’s win over Motherwell came 29 days after the defeat in Gibraltar but for all intents and purposes there was a lifetime between the performances. Celtic have been transformed in that time. It’s still early days but you can see the week-on-week improvement in Celtic.

We look like a proper team, one which will be difficult to play against and will carry a threat. Although we went home raving about the flowing, attacking, football, Celtic were patient early in the game; it took them 11 minutes to craft a chance. I think this is going to be a feature of our play this season. Getting our systems organised and feeling our way into games before stretching opponents.

Scott Sinclair probably did more last night than on his marquee performance at Tynecastle to show what he will bring to the team. He often played between the forward and midfield lines and always had an eye open for the defence-splitting pass.

It was another solid performance from Moussa Dembele, who looks increasingly comfortable in a Celtic shirt. Goals help, of course. Top performer was Tom Rogic. Twice he scored by perfectly timing a run into the box, the first of which was an exquisite piece of work between Rogic and Callum McGregor.

You will have again noticed Rogic’s fondness for ‘having a pop’. He’d developing that antenna for goal which we like so much in Kris Commons, a good number of Motherwell keeper Craig Samson’s saves came from the Aussie.

In the next round it’s ‘Same old Alloa……..’ This game comes in the midweek between the first and second European group stage games, so a home tie against lower league opponents will probably be a welcome change of pace for Brendan and the players. And us.

The Road to Lisbon

As many of your know, our own Mouldy67 will undertake an enormous effort in May to commemorate the 50th anniversary of something or other. He and others will cycle from Celtic Park to the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon to raise funds for the Celtic Foundation.

They will leave Celtic Park on 6 May 2017 (50 years to the day since we won the league across the city), arriving at Estadio Nacional on 25 May, the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions becoming the first team to break the Spain-Italy-Portugal stranglehold on the European Cup.

This is a stunning project. At the moment, opportunities exist for you to join Mouldy and the others in the cycle, you can also become a project sponsor, or simply donate to the fundraising effort. For more information, visit theroadtolisbon.com

as I recall, UEFA said it was considered a political act because the conflict with Israel was ongoing at the time …

good thing that none of the UEFA delegates attended the opening ceremony for the Olympic games, I guess ..

  2. Sorry to disappoint but been and still am season ticket holder for decades. We disagree on flag issue but give me a break on the paranoia.

  3. Bloody bell, I came on to read about how we are improving as a team. James Forrest especially, I can’t believe how different he looks on the pitch. In the 1st half we had a corner and Motherwell broke and wee Forrest chased all the way back to clear the ball in our box.

Politics has no place in football, a clown with a Palestine flag was close to me last night. I wish I had confronted him. But that would have been very heated.

I don’t understand what is going on, I go to Paradise for 1 reason and 1 reason only, to support the team.

If people want to raise awareness and protest, why not do it somewhere else like Hollyrood or Downing street?

My 10 year old son couldn’t put it better “What’s that got to do with the fitba?”

Apparently the flag of any full member state within UN is OK by UEFA but, unfortunately, not that of Palestinian Assembly.

Not our rules but for our sakes hope all supporters abide by the rules within the stadium and keep demos, flag waving outwith the ground and show their support for the plight of Palestinians that do not invole CFC.

The issue of Palestinian flags at Celtic park can be quite an emotive one.

I have proactively supported the Plight of the beleaguered Palestinian People for many, many years.

Being a militant Irish republican.it was a natural decision for me to identify our struggle with that of Palestine peoples’ fight against an invading foreign country.

When I was on remand in Crumlin road prison in 1977 the conditions were deplorable, the rules and punishments draconian and there was brutality almost on a daily basis.

There were few options available to counteract such situations and one that was employed regularly was one,two and sometimes three day hunger strike protests.

After a period of time it was realized that this type of protest was counter productive,it was detrimental to the morale of the prisoners and the prison authorities laughed at our self harming so other avenues were explored and initiated, mainly sabotage that affected the smooth running of the prison and it helped alleviate the the harsh living conditions.

We stopped shooting ourselves in the foot

I will be going to Celtic park next and I will not have a Palestinian flag because if we do we will be shooting ourselves in the foot. Our opponents (the sfa,the huns the establishment the israelis) will be laughing at us.

We will incur a large fine and possibly partial ground closure hurting no one only ourselves.

If we want to help the people of Palestine why not hold a prematch protest with a bucket collection from say 6.00pm, physically and financially helping there plight without hurting ourselves.

Highlight it on social media and the world will see the Celtic familys’ positive support for a nation under siege.

Hopefully, those who are concerned with the plight of ordinary Palestinians will take on board your advice and wisdom derived from your own fight against institutionalised injustice.

the support for you guys was evident at every single celtic match i attended.

    collections, papers, propaganda, every week.

i find it very hard to be told by other celtic supporters that a view cant be expressed, or a protest made.

I’ve heard it all before that Celtic/Politics don’t go. Bollocks. Only ever the case when the politics aren’t to the taste of some or they fear a wee fine from a corrupt UEFA.

Go protest outside Holyrood or the Israeli embassy were you willbe ignored or unnoticed. Aye right. Or show a bit of support in the firm of waving the emblem of a people who are treated criminally on a daily basis under UN resolutions, which are far too many to mention. Such a dangerous action to take. Israel isn’t in Europe. Why the hell are they afforded the opportunity to play in Euro competitions. If their was money in it UEFA would allow North Korea to play in their comps. FUKC UEFA!

It is not Celtic supporters who say that Palestinian flags may not be flown nor protest banners displayed, it is UEFA and unless you want the club sanctioned please do not do it. So that there is no doubt, such displays are forbidden by UEFA. HH

when you read the fines, we are not serial offenders,

i cant help but compare it to the OBAF debates.

    Football supporters are criminalised.

Celtic are receiving punishments , because UEFA dont like the messages.

Their rules are shit, protective of the organisation, so I feel dissent is good.

    Good point

How the hell an there be a UEFA ban on a national flag?

Seriously, does someone have a link to the edict or ruling?

Anyway, have had sympathy for the Palestinian cause and stood with activists outside the old GUU in 1984. Place was hoaching with all sorts of counter-activists and some seriously handy looking ‘students’ with military style haircuts and sensible shoes..

Seems our result and performance last nite has re-activated a few Ho wrong Huns seeking to de-rail the feel good factor.

For the record (sic) I wouldn’t think that waving a few Palestine flags at a fitba match will change anything for the better.

Also, understand that when Celtic Park was rebuilt c1994 some foundation works was completed in front of main stand to facilitate future development and enlargement of the South Stand.

Hope you are enjoying the Brendan Blizzard!

  18. Good evening my friends.

A wee day off work tomorrow as I have a Father of the Bride speech to write for the next day and what do I notice – that BT Sport are showing a full re-run of last night’s game at 8.30pm. I’ll be enoying that in the company of a couple of beers ;-)

SunnyJim and others – fine posts.

Won’t stop the loony lefties and other perpetual protesters and racists from trying to cause trouble but that’s inevitable.

  20. Get the rules changed? How do you do that?

When in London I visited the statues of Emiline Pankhurst and Nelson Mandela. They got rules changed by what means exactly?

I can not condemn fellow Celtic fans who want to show their support for the cause of the Palestinian people. Just as we supported the Justice for the 96 campaign.

There is nearly always an International Brigade flag at CP in the stand above the Green Brigade. Should that be banned?

The fact that flying the flag of Palestine should lead to a fine is an outrage.

Perhaps there should just be a big TIFO that reads “Support the UN resolutions.”? Does UEFA consider itself above the UN?

Politics and sport are completely inter connected. From England fielding Basil D’Olivera against South Africa, to Muhammed Ali to the Black Power salute political statements in sport have been commonplace.

Ali was harangued for his overt political stances at the time as were the two Black Power athletes as well as the White Australian runner who supported them.

You don’t change rules by conforming. You change rules by showing how unjust they are.

Rosa Parks didn’t sit at the back of the bus.

    Tim,

The sympathy for the poor Palestinian people is comprised of a lot of ignorance from people who haven’t set foot in a complicated part of the world. They don’t have to endure bombs for example.

Take your protest elsewhere by all means but you aren’t wanted at Celtic Park. The safety of Celtic supporters is more important than student politics.
