The affordability of ethics

342

Who is in the mood for some virtue signalling this afternoon? English Premier League teams yesterday agreed to prohibit gambling advertising on the front of their shirts. This is a gesture towards the ethical lobby which for the major clubs is practically costless. Gambling ads can remain on the shirt sleeves (or elsewhere) or displayed prominently on hoardings.

Most crucially, the EPL’s main TV partner will continue to drown their EPL coverage with promotions of their in-house gambling platform. Sky Bet rubs up against other gambling companies, who can call on partisanship to promote loyalty. It would be better for Sky if such competition was shoved to the margins and what’s better for Sky usually has a way of becoming better for the EPL. The game there will do no more than shrug at this decision.

The EPL has a global reach and top clubs attract brands who can benefit from international coverage. Airlines, telecoms, software and financial services brands are on all the most valuable shirts. Newly valuable Newcastle has a gambling sponsor, but they have not troubled European tournaments in a decade; next time they will hook an advertiser with a global reach.

Brands with global reach don’t travel up the M74, we do not have the profile they look for. The overwhelming extent of Celtic’s media coverage is in the domestic market; what we wear on our shirts, reflects us, or to be more specific, our vices.

Saying, “No gambling or alcohol partnerships” is an easy virtue signal to send out, but it is no more than that, especially from those support the drink and gambling industries with their custom, or serve alcohol in their bars and restaurants. “Yes, I would like a bet/drink, but my club really should take its lead from someone else.”

As with many ethical questions, this one is not as clear as it seems and that’s before we thrown the fuel of commercial realities and the pressure of winning, that you and I are more than happy to pour into the mix. Still, it’s an easy virtual signalling opp.

Where to start on the six match ban for headbutting a coach after a match when the victim is looking the other way? Acts of physical agression should not take place between coaches, never mind an assault such as this. Missing a month’s worth of games does not reach the deterrent threashold.

People gambled and drank booze, long before jersey sponsorship, not disrespecting posts on previous thread, but IMO the only way to work out if it’s attracting folk to drink and gamble, if they see it on a football jersey,is probably impossible to quantify.

Videocelts saying that more hun players out “injured “. Aye, so they are. 🤔

Yes onto Rugby Park. Quite well named I think for the sport that is practised there.

Looking forward to and declaring ” Still the only unbeaten team since domestic VAR was introduced. ”

Now that pesky plastic pitch is one fossil fuel product I would happily cancel.

Anyway, I better do some work. The ears have walls 😆

The article is titled The Affordability of Ethics.

    Catchy.

Virtue signalling down south? Won’t disagree but don’t care.

Why don’t we bring it closer to home.

I’ll stick my possibly antiquated, possibly puritanical neck out.

I don’t like gambling or alcohol sponsorship on our shirts.

    I always ask myself

“What would our founder make of it?”

    I don’t know of course

But, given his life’s work to lift the poor out of their wretched lives?

    I suspect he’d be horrified.

Perhaps when he went to get money from various publicans he metaphorically held his nose.

    Again, I don’t know.

Simple values. Easiest thing in the world to type.

    Here’s where it gets tricky.

Assumption: Shirt Sponsorship brings in £14m over 4 years.

Going without it means we miss out on either a Kyogo or a Jota (fee plus wages)

    And possibly a bit more.

    Hhmm. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

    Genuinely torn.

  8. The strongest argument from the booze brands involved in sponsorship has been that is does not increase consumption per se but it simply brand switches and makes a bunch of fans of any given clubs with from one brand to another. It the maths work then alienating rival fans is ok. If they don’t then it isn’t.

With Carling on both Celtic and Rangers shirts for 7 years the objective of becoming relevant and acceptable to a huge lager drinking audience was achieved. Neither set of fans was ever going to love that brand though.

Did it make anyone drink more lager ? It didn’t.

My mate recently changed jobs, moving from one company to another, and tells me that Sevco is a client of his previous employer.

He tells me he saw evidence that the Ibrox club are financially “scraping through” to the end of the season and in his opinion, unless there is massive change, admin is inevitable next season.

I know, I know. We’ve heard it all before, but that’s what I’m told. Could that be why the glib and shameless one is sniffing around again?

” ….and the woke nonsense of preventing a decent citizen from carrying a viable thermo nuclear device down the High Street.”

Now that really did make me smile :-)))

  11. I think the betting apps and the multitude of ‘in game’ options to bet on is the bigger problem.

Take 2 things that young people are already addicted to :- smartphones and football and get them addicted to the betting apps.

I agree with GP and P67 that the EPL move is a non-story and if i can add another buzzphrase; sportswashing

People are a bit sick of the excess in transfers, wages and the cost of club acquisition.

The only ethics in the EPL is a county in the south east with no senior club

  13. WOKE, be buggered. I strongly believe in and agree that everyone is entitled to an opinion.

What bugs me big time, is why people do not ignore their ridiculous garbage. Why,ffs.

Books, cartoons, films need to be altered to prevent offence. Like all minority groups, they are attention seekers and need to “get a life”.

If you take offence at trivia, try hauling your arse to the frontline in the Ukrainian war against Russia!!!!

Then you really will have something to be offended by.

Makes me sick, and now I believe HM Government is about to pass a law to allow workers of a company the right to sue their employers if the get abused on the phone.

I personally am a huge fan of letting chimps run the country, but don’t think that will happen somehow.

There’s probably some truth in that but surely the advertisers’ aspiration is to increase market size. Otherwise their teams of accountants, actuaries and even psychologists are getting money for nothing.

As for betting firms, they appear to have not one scruple between them. Neither death nor tragedy will stand in the way of profit.

    Yeah, that stinkin’ EPL.

They don’t even have a club that’s won 5 times more league titles than its age.
