The affordability of ethics

342

Who is in the mood for some virtue signalling this afternoon? English Premier League teams yesterday agreed to prohibit gambling advertising on the front of their shirts. This is a gesture towards the ethical lobby which for the major clubs is practically costless. Gambling ads can remain on the shirt sleeves (or elsewhere) or displayed prominently on hoardings.

Most crucially, the EPL’s main TV partner will continue to drown their EPL coverage with promotions of their in-house gambling platform. Sky Bet rubs up against other gambling companies, who can call on partisanship to promote loyalty. It would be better for Sky if such competition was shoved to the margins and what’s better for Sky usually has a way of becoming better for the EPL. The game there will do no more than shrug at this decision.

The EPL has a global reach and top clubs attract brands who can benefit from international coverage. Airlines, telecoms, software and financial services brands are on all the most valuable shirts. Newly valuable Newcastle has a gambling sponsor, but they have not troubled European tournaments in a decade; next time they will hook an advertiser with a global reach.

Brands with global reach don’t travel up the M74, we do not have the profile they look for. The overwhelming extent of Celtic’s media coverage is in the domestic market; what we wear on our shirts, reflects us, or to be more specific, our vices.

Saying, “No gambling or alcohol partnerships” is an easy virtue signal to send out, but it is no more than that, especially from those support the drink and gambling industries with their custom, or serve alcohol in their bars and restaurants. “Yes, I would like a bet/drink, but my club really should take its lead from someone else.”

As with many ethical questions, this one is not as clear as it seems and that’s before we thrown the fuel of commercial realities and the pressure of winning, that you and I are more than happy to pour into the mix. Still, it’s an easy virtual signalling opp.

Where to start on the six match ban for headbutting a coach after a match when the victim is looking the other way? Acts of physical agression should not take place between coaches, never mind an assault such as this. Missing a month’s worth of games does not reach the deterrent threashold.

Breaking news! Japan national team manager Moriyasu left Japan for Europe today. He’ll inspect players in Europe for a month. He said that, “I want to build better relationship with Ange. If I can have a chance to speak with him, I would like to visit Celtic.” before departure.

    Definition of Woke:

An oxymoron term used to describe the many indoctrinated & radically left-wing people of today’s world who are obsessed with jumping on whatever mainstream bandwagon is necessary to feel included, though ironically being the most intolerant and hypocritical people on the planet.

The irony is the term should be used if correctly to describe those who are ‘awake’ to the modern world however these people are so closed minded they cannot think critically, and are actually ‘asleep.’

As an aside, the obedient always see themselves as virtuous rather than cowardly.

  6. I surprise who Aberdeen are playing next week as Euan Anderson shows Shinnie a red card after he wins the ball in a tackle.

It was never in question that Carling would grow its share as it started with virtually zero prior to the sponsorship.

My point was it did not grow the consumption of mainstream lager in total.

It also did not deliver a payback for around 9 years……that was about expectations.

That RC player went into the tackle with both feet off the ground, that’s not under control therefore a red. Wrong way round, Anderson is an arse

German born, her family moved to Spain when she was ten. She moved to Ireland in her late teens to pursue her love of music.

    And she loves Celtic.

    Well worth a watch.

I always expect a red for the team that is playing them next in a tough game.

    Was it a red?

  13. BRRB: It’s the Irish language tv channel, similar to BBC Alba. You’ll get it on the TG4 Player (via a VPN, if necessary) or it’s likely to be on BBC Alba soon

I’m good thanks, my son still supports Real but took him on the tour of paradise and he was playing Celtic songs on the phone on the way home 😀

The corporate stuff interests me, Paul had an article about Sky being in trouble if they lost the EPL and it got me looking into who owned them, realised that they are way bigger than relying on Footie

Hope everything is good with you and yours

  16. Agree completely with this article.

On strip advertising is an interesting one.

Arsenal, encouraging us to ‘visit Rwanda’?

    Ouch

  17. When he was a coach, Beale didn’t have to worry about his runaway mouth. In some respects it maybe was a good thing as it allowed him to say things to the players away from public scrutiny that a manager couldn’t get away with.

Now it’s clear he went out and did a post match complaining about an incident he didn’t even watch back. He seemingly has no control of that mouth of his.

His comments about having a squad every bit as good as Celtic’s was a huge mistake. Now he has to beat us or its on him.

He’s a man fast running out of road.

  18. Just watching Ange’s press conference…

I remember when Brendan was flying if watching a game in the pub … the whole pub would “shoosh” to hear Brendan …

I am and always will be a Neil Lennon fanatic .. I think Neil gave us far more than some gave Neil … but

Ange is special … I love him like every other Celtic manager … I don’t think we’ve had a bad one

    Good times …

And before BRRB posts … “who asked you”

Nobody needs to ask … a blog open to all :-)

    Loving Ange 🇦🇺
