Who is in the mood for some virtue signalling this afternoon? English Premier League teams yesterday agreed to prohibit gambling advertising on the front of their shirts. This is a gesture towards the ethical lobby which for the major clubs is practically costless. Gambling ads can remain on the shirt sleeves (or elsewhere) or displayed prominently on hoardings.
Most crucially, the EPL’s main TV partner will continue to drown their EPL coverage with promotions of their in-house gambling platform. Sky Bet rubs up against other gambling companies, who can call on partisanship to promote loyalty. It would be better for Sky if such competition was shoved to the margins and what’s better for Sky usually has a way of becoming better for the EPL. The game there will do no more than shrug at this decision.
The EPL has a global reach and top clubs attract brands who can benefit from international coverage. Airlines, telecoms, software and financial services brands are on all the most valuable shirts. Newly valuable Newcastle has a gambling sponsor, but they have not troubled European tournaments in a decade; next time they will hook an advertiser with a global reach.
Brands with global reach don’t travel up the M74, we do not have the profile they look for. The overwhelming extent of Celtic’s media coverage is in the domestic market; what we wear on our shirts, reflects us, or to be more specific, our vices.
Saying, “No gambling or alcohol partnerships” is an easy virtue signal to send out, but it is no more than that, especially from those support the drink and gambling industries with their custom, or serve alcohol in their bars and restaurants. “Yes, I would like a bet/drink, but my club really should take its lead from someone else.”
As with many ethical questions, this one is not as clear as it seems and that’s before we thrown the fuel of commercial realities and the pressure of winning, that you and I are more than happy to pour into the mix. Still, it’s an easy virtual signalling opp.
Where to start on the six match ban for headbutting a coach after a match when the victim is looking the other way? Acts of physical agression should not take place between coaches, never mind an assault such as this. Missing a month’s worth of games does not reach the deterrent threashold.

St Mingin equalise that’s me telt
Watching the huns, just for a laugh. They are complete shoite. Shouldn’t be anywhere near second place.
Oh dear, nearly half time anaw. Boooooo 😂
Their result today is irrelevant.
I did go on their forums though at HT to see how they were playing.
Not very good was the clean version of the first half performance.
Some comments about having no idea what the style of play was…which I’ve been thinking as well for sometime.
Cross, Cross, Cross, Cross seems to Beales mantra.
OHara again 👍

Well that’s Villa, who I always had a soft spot for since “Packie” McParland played for them, in the top 6, see what happens when you have a decent coaching staff.
TONTINE, said ages (years?) ago that Emery was the real deal as a coach. He had a hard shift at Arsenal (when he arrived unable to speak English), but if Arsenal had stuck by him who knows what might have happened?
I know we contributed to our downfall in the game v. PSG at Celtic Park in our open play approach, but that was the best football I’ve ever seen played over 90 minutes, coached by yer man Emery. They were outstanding from the goalkeeper to the wee merde out on the left who, despite being a despicable human being, is a footballing genius (but will never be a footballing GREAT).
I felt very confident that Villa would be turned around when he arrived and he has been great for them so far. As you said, what a difference with a decent coach. When you think back to all the utter guff thrown about when Slippy G arrived there, and compare the two teams then and now, you see that Slippy was a player but isnae a coach while Emery played most of his senior career in Spain’s second division but IS a coach.

Having gone 2-1 up the idiot of a captain gets a red card for foul and abusive language – 10v10 they equalise
And 4 each on yellows
And we’re down to 9 😱
St Mingin chuck it shock. Carson will be delighted

Haaland’s got 2 for citeh in the first half – some player
Got the Grand National winner today @ 10/1. I only bet Corach Rambler because it’s the same stable as my last National winner One for Arthur. I got lucky.
Also bet City to beat Leicester 4-0 @ 15/2. 3-0 up HT. Hoping they see it as job done and take it easy 2nd half.
Haaland on another hat-trick. The guy’s a machine.
So, Sevco are now clear in the penalties awarded league table ….
… while being miles in front in the net penalties awarded/conceded league.
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Think how much further ahead they’d be in both leagues if Scottish refs treated them fairly

I’m a bit late to this party, but what the heck…..
I see that Beale (but not Tav) has walked back his dangerous (and factually incorrect) statement that Jota handled the ball on the way to our 2nd goal.
Just want to state the obvious. SKY folk KNEW that there had been no handball. They had seen the replays. They had discussed it in the studio. They knew that VAR was ok with the call. And yet, they allowed the lie to go unchallenged. The decided not to correct the coach and the captain when they were being interviewed. As far as I can see, they didn’t correct the narrative in the studio. This clearly fed into the frothing wrath that followed. This in turn, allowed every other news outlet to spread the lie further.
Utterly irresponsible ‘journalism’.
Sky to rangers, is no better than fox ‘news’ to trump.
AT- The crush getting in was horrific, only to be met by the fenced off pens…
