The annual preseason youth breakthrough

230

The long road to fitness started in Austria last night as Celtic gave an outing to 19 players against Wiener Viktoria.  This time of year always provides an interesting angle on the young talent waiting to breakthrough, often to be overlooked until the following year’s preseason tour.

Last night 19-year-olds Johnny Kenny, who joined in January from Sligo Rovers, and Bosan Lawal, who joined a year ago from the Watford youth setup, did most to pique interest.  Let’s hope Kenny can fight off the fierce competition from Albian Ajeti for the third striker spot.  Having only just turned 17, Rocco Vata seems worth keeping tabs on.

Getting to the point in their career that they are making a Celtic debut is a huge achievement for Kenny, Lawal, Vata and Matthew Anderson, the 18-year-old full back who played last night.  The fallout rate of signed youth players before this point must be close to 99%.

The challenge ahead, to become a Celtic regular, remains daunting.  It is as much a challenge for the coaches as the players.

    All begs the questions…

Are we still Peter’s SPFL-focussed one of two top dogs?

Or are we about to be Mr Nicholson’s genuine, could be perennial Euro 1st or 2nd tier contenders?

The answer might tell us if we should even be bothering with our own youth development system at all.

A really well-resourced analytics and scouting operation might give us the same yield from trawling other teams best prospects, rather than our own tiers which mostly act as a donor club for Hibs, Tranmere and ilk.

Anyhoo – off to watch a few episodes of Ghosts – the US one.

  2. The lies never stop.

Tax credits were a huge transfer of wealth from the richest to the poorest.

That is a targeted transfer — making the most of scarce resources.

To claim anything else is either far left trouser snakery.

Motive = we can’t get elected so we will sh*te on the doorsteps of those that can.

You can tell how powerful tax credits were by the speed with which the Tories / Cleggy cut them back and then abolished them.

The council workers struck over a pay increase.

There were no cuts in 78/79.

The Tories / establishment burst a gut to break the ongoing wages policy.

Henry with its local “Treasure Island” vs US disaster led the way in the private sector.

It couldn’t afford a strike in the UK so was happy to pony up a Tory friendly increase.

    Funny that.

There was no monetarism in 1976.

That had to wait until 1979 and Maggie and her friends from Chicago.

JaC’s SIL reading a book by MF on holiday does not monetarism policy make.

  14. I believe that the Celtic youths will have at least 6 matches of a high standard this season as they should be playing in the corresponding Champions league matches – if that competition is running this year.

I remember when I was coming out of the match in Munich was it 6 years ago and the youths were leaving along side us.

I asked Calvin Miller how they got on.

    “we got absolutely horsed”

I think they got beat by 2 or 3 goals but he said it could have been 10.

Much like the first team that night

I don’t know why you spend so much time attacking the Labour Party.

The truth is you would never support any political party, no matter how left wing, that does not support Scottish independence.

Your politics begin and end with Scottish nationalism.

And I suspect you’d support a right leaning independent Scotland rather than a left leaning, or centrist, UK.

Silence is a strategy for those of us bored senseless by 2 posters fighting a constant verbal race to the bottom on a subject many don’t particular care for. You’re not going to convince each other so wouldn’t be better if you just ignored each other instead?

It was clear he crossed a line (as you do often) and Paul67 had to intervene. As a couple of grown men you’d hope it would scunder you both and act as a catalyst to catch yourselves on. Seemingly not.

  19. Just finished watching last nights bounce match.

No injuries reported and a good fitness exercise.

Level of team we were playing means you can’t judge anyone properly but there were good signs from the unfortunately named one in central defence, Vata and Dede of the youngsters on show.

If they aren’t in the plans for any potential call up to the first team squad then they must be loaned out to the best level of competition available.

Unfortunately the youngsters with the most potential were poached by other clubs. Doak, Morrison, Hepburn and Adam.

We do the same so we have to accept the way it is.

Feeling good about this season if we can add a quality defensive midfielder, another central defender if Jullien leaves and a third forward as if one of the current 2 get injured then we could be really short.

In my humble opinion , Labour is finished and what is required to effectively deal with the Tories is a proper re birth of the original Liiberal party…

With a policy of LVT at its core …let’s start raising Public Finance via this method and watch the Tories and their funders quake in their boots …Let’s tax Land not Labour

Oh no surely not that old Liberal hobby horse.

Anyone selling that policy is just a snake oil salesman looking for a victim.

How long has it been known about but never fully implemented?

Loving the old Liberal luv — remember the economic hard money warriors came from Manchester branch of Liberalism before they came from Chicago.

SETTING FREE THE BEARS @ 12:35 PM.

    Thoroughly enjoyable read.

    Respect.

I’d add one item to the Corbyn critique.

No strategy or defined policy on Brexit.

As to your question – should others behave like Tories to get elected?

    IMHO, absolutely.

Deploy a strategy, behaviours and mores to get elected. Bring people with the requisite skillset in for that gig – and be honest with them about what happens after.

Once that single outcome has been achieved, put all of the above (including the people) on the shelf for 4½ years.

And deploy a different strategy, behaviours and mores to govern.

  27. carpe diem 63 on

Hey …as I stated my humble opinion …but one thing is definitely true…the Left wing in Britain has been deliberately tainted by the media and the establishment for so long any variation of it is unelectable…we are more like The USA politically than ever before so to my mind Liberalism is the acceptable way forward …either that or just get used to a permanent Tory one party state

  28. carpe diem 63 on

3 more quality additions to personnel Celtic and let’s make this a season to remember

  29. JC @ 2017 = Lively / fresh / ideas / energy.

    JC @ 2019 = Tired / old / crabbit / no focus.

The media did a job on him — including the BBC three days before the election.

However by that point he was phoning it in which was a pity.

The Facebook campaign against him was a classic of its type.

Drip / drip / drip — leaving a handle for someone to latch onto.

But he never really helped himself.

Brexit at any level — no constructive narrative.

Salisbury poisonings — of the scale unworldly.

But that was always him — a campaigner never a constructive politician.

But how many will now admit that even with his flaws visible from space — JC would have made a much better PM than BoJo ever was capable of doing. The margin was huge to begin with and has grown every day over the past 30 months.

But very few will admit that they were wrong.
