The beating of Barca, II. This time it’s Tony.

1064

Where do we start discussing last night?  Perhaps the end of the night.  There was joy in abundance, not only inside Celtic Park, but in the streets surrounding the game and in a hundred thousand homes across the world.  This joy manifest itself into a great sense of community.  That performance brought tears, hugs, spontaneous jumping up and down, and not only from Celtic fans.  Messages have poured in from fans of other SPL clubs and beyond.

This is what great sport can do for people.

Brother Walfrid has excellent timing.  He managed to arrange our kick-off meeting to coincide with match day four of the Champions League group stage.  Those of us who attended the anniversary celebrations on Tuesday were reminded what Celtic is all about, the best team in the world were in Glasgow waiting to play, the fairy tale script was written, but could it be delivered?

It’s the details which are most impressive.  Mikael Lustig looked like he could play in any team in any league.  He was comfortable and composed throughout.  Adam Matthews, deputising for an injured former Player of the Year, played out of position flawlessly.  I watched him struggle at left back on his Celtic Park debut in a friendly against Wolves last year; it defies explanation how far he has progressed.

Please forget about Victor’s goal, it will only detract from his incredible midfield performance.  His composure, skill and assertiveness troubled Iniesta and Messi all game.  This was all the more impressive given the absence of captain, Scott Brown.

Georgios Samaras was crucial for most of the evening.  He was the one player Barca seemed afraid of, although a lack of training caught up with him before he was subbed.

I’ll not burden Tony Watt publicly with the comparison I made of him earlier in the season but he possesses an impressive array of attributes: upper body strength, pace-with-the-ball and a nose for goal.  I’m tempted to say he will continue to improve but, to what level?  Without injuries to Hooper, Lassad and Forrest it’s unlikely he would have enjoyed as much time last night.  Sometimes Fortune Favours the Celtic.

All of Europe would have been impressed with Fraser Forster last night, dubbed La Grand Muralla, the Big Wall, by a Spanish newspaper.  He will play for England, so too with Kelvin Wilson if he maintains this season’s form.

The only man with a problem today is Neil Lennon.  Tactically the two games against Barcelona have been as accomplished as any I have witnessed.  Neil needs to know how to follow that in Lisbon. I’ve no idea.

Happy Birthday Celtic!

  2. I think it may be going a bit far to claim that we are now the greatest football team in the world because we defeated Barca.

Over the 2 games with them the aggregate score was 3-3 . A draw.

So we are are only equal best team in the world- at the moment.

We may improve on this before the end of the season.

  3. Vladimir Romanov?

I checked what is happening East from me.

In the interview given yesterday to the Lithuanian TV, Vladimir Romanov declared his focus on politics in the country. He said that made decision about fundarising new party. Party programme will be sport and ani-corruption.

Good morning Amigos, what a brilliant week. The best football fans celebration ever, and that was before the game. Some brilliant compliments about our support in the Spanish press and the taming of the mighty Barcelona. Fantastic!!

Amazing how mush you can annoy the lower division support with a wry smile of satisfaction.

  6. Sounds like the mighty Barca were a beaten team before even going on the park.

Fabregas lamented: “Almost every team plays this way against us. But we still manage to get plenty of wins. We have to keep on playing our way, and moving forward. “We have no excuses. We controlled possession, but we lacked depth. We did not have many clearcut chances. We knew Celtic could score from corners and counter-attacks, and that is what happened. We had chances, but they took theirs and we did not take ours. But we have two games left, and we will try to win them.”

I’ve just looked at the 360 degree photo on the club site. If they can facially recognise me from that they they can come get me for the bank I robbed. From the quality of the photo they’ll be looking for a man who might look like JD or BP or GB.

Comparing this photo to the cynical filming of the green brigade is laughable. But then, I’m not completely paranoid…………………………..yet.

  8. “We played all the football. Celtic just arrived in our penalty area twice, and scored two goals – from a corner and a long clearance by their keeper.”

Someone should tell Lionel, you need to score in football in order to win.

  9. Oh,by the bye, is there any trading on the individual pieces that made up the display before kick-off. Not that I have any intention of selling mine. I will keep it like the original programmes I have of Lisbon and Seville. Family heirlooms.

  10. Positively, devilishly handsome, ( if somewhat nervous looking), in my photo at Paradise on Wednesday.

Love this comment from a Panathinaikos supporter on one of the videos on youtube of the GB display:

“I am 33 years old , from Athens Greece , supporting the team of Panathinaikos .. I am very proud of our correos, i have seen a lot in my life , participate in many of them, but for sure i can say this job on Wednesday’s game was THE BEST I EVER SEEN in my life .. Congrats “Bhoys” !!!!!”

Now the Panathinakos fans are the masters of all fans when it comes to these displays, the famous Gate 13 section of their ground in particular.

There is no higher praise in my opinion.

Well done once more to the Green Brigade and all the Celtic support.

    That was spectacular.

  12. For those who were questioning Miku and his ability.

“I have come to a different country and the first two months have been very difficult for me,” he said. “Not just the weather but also the times for having lunch and eating the main meal are different.

“My wife doesn’t speak English and my baby girl, who is only six months old, has been sick. She felt bad because she didn’t like the

cold but she is OK now.

“I feel good, too. We have my own home

and the manager has been a big help.”

Interesting comments on “Wake up to money” (5-Live) this morning.

Begbie Traynor an insolvency consultancy were contrasting the bleak outlook for Scottish Football vs their English Counterparts.

Seemed a rather odd criteria and the piece had we wondering.

It started off well enough, listened to the commentary at the end of a game this week where a Scottish team defeated the best team in the World, in the most prestigious club compettion in the World.

But the interview with the firm’s partner was rather vague (an ex Leeds United Director).

    Paraphrasing…

English Clubs have improved in the last six month – this was due to ST, TV money etc coming in (quelle surprise) their prospects were good, Clubs were on a sounder footing.

Scottish Clubs were in a more perilious position with Six Clubs in dire financial circumstances – not named.

Although Hearts current predicament was used as an examplar.

Clark Interviewer – Was this down to National team decline, TV money or R@ngers demise.

Seems TV money has something to do with it, National team not really – RFC yes, their drop to the for the top tier has had dire effects on Scottish Football, attendances amongst other things.

    MMMMMMmmmmmmmmm

Well as we know Scottish Football’s decade of decline and England’s abundance of TV money is neither unknown or a recent phenomenon.

    So googled it quickly…

Seems Begbie Traynor had dome a report and it was covered in the FT.com. It wasn’t covered much better in the illustrious publication, although there was more detail.

    Now

They looked at the English League in April, when Football teams run out of revenue. They did not look at Scottish Football at this time from information gleaned, though Scottish Football was going through a historical crisis.

The November comparison – English Clubs are from the bottom three tiers, the Scottish Clubs from the top three.

Yes the EPL and the Scottish Fourth tier with Sevco’s impact are not considered.

    Random eh!

The other noticable point about the FT’s piece is the FACT that Rangers came OUT of administration in June.

It would be good to get a insight on this report from the more knowledgable posters but to my way of thinking it seems like the Armageddon seekers needed a wee boost. In a week where Scottish Football was shown in an excellent light in World Football.

From a dreich and slightly wet Glasgow.

The enormity of this game is now firmly in my head, watched it all again from the main stand perspective and it gets better every time I see it, what a fantastic addition to the Celtic Story and what makes us the best club in the world.

If tic tac is the form of play from an attacking Barca display what, if any is the name of the style of play that captures tic tac and takes the ball from them, I need to know cause on the occasions we need to do it I want the team to do it when needed and I can name it !

  20. chairbhoy- I heard the uber Clive Dunn propagandist Tom Miller on Talksport at 7.30, telling Alan Brazil that basically Scottish football is heading for Armageddon, all number of clubs ( e.g Dundee Utd) in a dire financial state.

Cue 8am headlines, top of the list- “Scottish football on the brink of collapse”………according to our “expert” Tom Miller.

    He’s simply a fat liar.

  21. Goldstar

Eddie Thompson was on the radio last week stating that DU were doing well …bank debt was down and attendances up …..

  22. something Celtic fans will be telling their grandchildren when they beat the great Barcelona. English commentator ….the party has only just begun in Glasgow. Hail Hail Celtic 2 – Barcelona 1 stunning .

  23. I hear from a good source that the Aberdeen Board are delighted with the upturn in many ways this season. And I have a family friend who works at DUFC, also pleased with the fan reaction and engagement. A wee bit annoyed the team has not capitalised but time yet and things are generally good.

I also (well my old man really) has a contact at St Mirren and they are not in a good place. However they were not in a good place this time last year either. Income from a semi final against Celtic will have warmed the spirit I imagine! The St Mirren guy says there are other clubs who (when the team’s challenge tapers off) will start lamenting the 2 missing gate receipts, in contrast to the teams in the east who are having a renaissance.

I think the gang of 10, by the end of the season, will not be a gang at all. There will be 2 gangs at each others throats if ‘reconstruction’ with an agenda rears its ugly head.
