The best laid Foundations

The Celtic FC Foundation are holding a golf day in April to raise funds for autism in Scotland, the first such day the Foundation have organised.  When planning for the event, Leftybhoy, Brogan Rogan, Harry Brady, Tyneside No.1, me, Thomas and Jane from the Foundation, and Foundation chief exec, Tony Hamilton, wondered if and how we would be able to get winning Ryder Cup player, Stephen Gallacher, to help out.

Over two meetings we discussed strategy on how to get to Stephen, how to hone our pitch, explain the autism work, so that we might be able to get a pin flag signed, or something like that.  Two meetings!

Tony Hamilton was a Firhill last night when a Celtic fan spoke to him:

Celtic fan: “Are you the guy organising the golf day?”

Tony (thinking he’s about to sell a ticket): “Aye”.

Celtic fan: “I’m a golf pro, I might be able to help out with auction stuff.”

Tony (now worried about that ticket sale): “Great.  Which course are you pro at?”

Celtic fan: “No course, I’m on the European tour.  I’ll leave stuff with Stevie.”

Tony (confused what that means and wondering why this guy doesn’t have a regular job in a golf shop): “That’s very kind of you.”

After the game Tony checks his phone and sees a message from Tyneside No.1:

“Ryder Cup winner Stephen Gallacher in stand tonight. Have you rugby tackled him re our Golf Day yet?”

Tony’s been staring at a wall ever since.

Information on the golf day, complete with gratefully received supporting items from Stephen Gallacher, available here.

  6. How does Frank McAvennie get a job ad a radio pundit? Do these broadcasters take anyone as long as they are a football name, regardless of how they come across on air?

No harm to the guy but bliddy hell. He makes Gordon Dalziel sound like Richard Burton.

  9. Delighted to see big yogi pick up a second manger of the month in a row. Begs the Question…. What does Ronny have to do to get the nod?

Nice to see how badly these morons are hurting though……

  10. When Franky bhoy said Man City didn’t sign Bitton for political reasons…

I thought, Franky you’re taking a stab in the dark there.

Think the real reason was an injury, or possibly work permit.

I may go into a Church and light a candle for a friend, hoping it will help his recovery from an operation he’s going through on the 16th of this month.

  14. Tom,

Frank McAvennie may not be Brain of Britain, speak the best Queens English or possess a psychological degree. But he is a former player who did a turn for us and is still a Celtic man,

He refers to Celtic as we, and that’ll do for me.

Seriously tho it highlights whats wrong with football in dealing with sfa’s establishment club and its players.rule breaking for mculloch and in gambling for simonsen.

  16. Excellent article WC on John McNamee, another player along with John Cushley and John Kurilla that suffered the Ceaser ailment.

KDS has an excellent theme on old Celtic pictures, one of the latest captures the “Greens v Whites” pre-season game , this was an opportunity for the fans to see new players at the club, I personally saw a young Bobby Murdoch one summer’s night who had just joined the club along with “trainer” Bob Rooney fae Cambuslang.

We were not alone with this feature as it was common in the Scottish game. For us Celtic fans there was an open gate policy with the “Little Sisters of the Poor” waiting on the other side for much sought after donations.

The sides for the 1960/61 season that night included 9 full or soon to be full internationalists in the “Green” side with the exceptions being Johnny Kelly who I don’t recall in the hoops and Bobby Carroll.

The latter was a huge disappointment to the faithful as he had been voted Junior Player of the Year while winning the Scottish Junior Cup with Irvine Meadow in a season that he amassed 75 goals, that while playing as a right winger. He also scored our first goals in Europe.

The picture also includes 4 future European Cup Winners, I’ve included Pat Crerand here as well as big Yogi and Neilly Mochan who sat on the bench that wonderful night.

Not in either of the squads are Johnny Divers and wee Ten Thirty who was now in the bad books for daring to stand up tae thug shearer, although he played in the LC Semi against Clyde he was dropped for the final….the 7-1 game..

The “Whites” had a very young John Fallon in goal, no memory of the full backs and a strong central defence of “McNamee, Kurilla and Clark, all 3 were tough as nails with John K being called the “Gorilla” by the Jungle.

Its forward line that made me stop and think, as Alec Byrne, Charlie Gallagher and Jim Conway are in it. Nice players all 3 but that’s about it. As the Big Mhan once said “you don’t win trophies with a team full of Charlie Gallaghers and Harry Hoods.

This “White” side contained players that had probably been signed by Jock as he had only left the club 4 months previously.

We were underachieving and not at the races in those barren years and looking at the players we had available it has to be put down to mismanagement.

That same line-up with 4 exceptions, the resigned Willie Fernie, John Clark in for club captain Bertie Peacock, Alec Byrne and Charlie Gallagher were part of the original side that lost to Dunfermline, Willie O’Neill replacing the ill Jim Kennedy for the replay.

No Neilly Mochan who left the club for the Arabs at the end of the season. This is a strange omission as the season before he had scored 7 goals in 2 replays against the Buddies, not only was he a prolific goalscorer but also a very handy left back, perfect replacement for the “President”.

No club and country captain Bertie Peacock who was now fit and playing for the black north the same night of the replay and no wee Ten Thirty who left for Birmingham at season’s end as well.

We did have Willie Fernie back from Middlesboro but Willie like Alec Byrne and Charlie Gallagher was a ball player.

History has been kind to Bob Kelly but he effed us up big time during the years in the wilderness.

We should ever be grateful for the return of the “Latter day Christ” on March 8, 1965.

Oh and getting back to John McNamee I saw him almost half big Yogi in two in a LC Semi at the “worse floodlights in the UK” stadium.

  17. macavennie ..please…is he still carrying a bag of money to invest in treasure hunting…a first degree ponce…

  18. Expected win last night. Ronny now has a very young squad with the addition of the new lads and with Johannson now fully settled there’s plenty of energy in midfield. Ronny’s methods can really take off but there is still a worry about central defence if we lose Virgil and Jason at the end of the season. Ronny must do everything to hold onto Denayer for another season at least.

  21. Box,

Maybe just maybe if Celtic payed Frank what he was due,he would not have needed to go on a treasure hunt. He has a genuine grevience and I do not hear him “bad mouthing” the hoops, like some of our former legends.

Thanks for the annual ‘trial’ match info.

Brought back memories, disjointed ones mind you lol.

I’m certain my first ever visit was one of the trials but I can’t be certain which year but must be either 63 or 64. I do recall sitting on the wee wall at the jungle…I think jinky was playing and Charlie Gallagher & John divers but otherwise nothing!!!

    Ah youth…what a waste…
