The best laid Foundations

The Celtic FC Foundation are holding a golf day in April to raise funds for autism in Scotland, the first such day the Foundation have organised.  When planning for the event, Leftybhoy, Brogan Rogan, Harry Brady, Tyneside No.1, me, Thomas and Jane from the Foundation, and Foundation chief exec, Tony Hamilton, wondered if and how we would be able to get winning Ryder Cup player, Stephen Gallacher, to help out.

Over two meetings we discussed strategy on how to get to Stephen, how to hone our pitch, explain the autism work, so that we might be able to get a pin flag signed, or something like that.  Two meetings!

Tony Hamilton was a Firhill last night when a Celtic fan spoke to him:

Celtic fan: “Are you the guy organising the golf day?”

Tony (thinking he’s about to sell a ticket): “Aye”.

Celtic fan: “I’m a golf pro, I might be able to help out with auction stuff.”

Tony (now worried about that ticket sale): “Great.  Which course are you pro at?”

Celtic fan: “No course, I’m on the European tour.  I’ll leave stuff with Stevie.”

Tony (confused what that means and wondering why this guy doesn’t have a regular job in a golf shop): “That’s very kind of you.”

After the game Tony checks his phone and sees a message from Tyneside No.1:

“Ryder Cup winner Stephen Gallacher in stand tonight. Have you rugby tackled him re our Golf Day yet?”

Tony’s been staring at a wall ever since.

Information on the golf day, complete with gratefully received supporting items from Stephen Gallacher, available here.

That’s the point mate, the Celtic end was choca, Thistle’s whole support could have been housed in the 2/3rd’s of The Jackie Husband stand. That would have left the main stand free for us.

  4. Re the Jock Stein Charlie G quote…

It has grown arms and legs.

The comment arose from a conversation with Bob Crampsey and Jock took the opportunity to tease Bob who he thought had an overly romantic and amateur (in a good sense) view of football, maybe similar to Bob Kelly.

At no point was there any suggestion that Charlie had not earned or worked for his place in the Celtic line up. That he became more of a back up for Bertie is no sleight at all. He was intricate and nimble; a great passer and crosser of a ball.

Charlie was not as hard and cute as Bertie (well nobody was lol) but he was nobody’s pushover which those who did not see him might think from the somewhat misrepresented earlier postings.

    A really good player.

An Tearman, I know Bobby Carroll played for St Mirren for a while but not sure who else he played for. Sorry.

The Colin Stein song is good along with Kenny Dalglish superstar, how many goals has he scored so far.

Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice probably didn’t expect any of their songs to be adapted to football chants.

Justafan, I would have loved to have seen Charlie Gallagher playing.

My dad, his brothers and other Celtic fans of their generation I know, thought Charlie was one of the best passers of a ball they had seen. He would probably be worth a fortune now.

I was at a lunch years ago and I was sitting next to Evan Williams. He was great. He said to the table that as well as being great players, all of our squad in the mid to late sixties, could look after themselves, including those who some of our support thought weren’t hard enough.

“Talking to Sophie about her Dad earlier, some details are already becoming a little sketchy to her, she was only 11 and a lot has happened. I would like to get a memory box together for her with bits and pieces about him. If you have anything to contribute please let me know. Stories photos anything really. A recording of him speaking would be nice. Please ask friends who are not on social media. She adored her Dad so much and she is struggling to remember him”.

If your on FB have a look, Linda is on my friends list. Paul67 has already put something on, it will bring a smile as a tear to your eye, thanks Paul.

Hamiltontim, the photo of big Billy on the players shoulders was the 1981 league winning game, one of my favourite games I was at including a wonderful goal by the even more wonderful Tommy Burns.

There is a great photo from that game of Tommy Burns and Johnny Doyle celebrating after the above game. Roy Croppie occasionally posts it.

1979 – 1982 what I describe as the sh*t years , only constant in my life then was Celtic. Thankfully a lot more constants now .

  27. For you with no knowledge of baseball one of the sport’s most colourful characters was Pete Rose aka Charlie Hustle. He played from 1963 to 1986, and managed from 1984 to 1989.

He was a switch hitter, the all-time Major League leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), singles (3,215), and outs (10,328).

He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and also made 17 All-Star appearances at an unequaled five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B, & 1B).

In August 1989, three years after he retired as an active player, Rose agreed to permanent ineligibility from baseball amidst accusations that he gambled on baseball games while playing for and managing the Reds, including claims that he bet on his own team.

In 1991, the Baseball Hall of Fame formally voted to ban those on the “permanently ineligible” list from induction, after previously excluding such players by informal agreement among voters. In 2004, after years of public denial, Rose admitted to betting on baseball and on, but not against, the Reds.

Pete Rose was banned indefinitely and now 25 years later he would like to be reinstated to the Baseball Hall of Fame

However, he was granted one concession: he could apply for reinstatement once a year for as long as he lived after ten years. He has subsequently applied for reinstatement four times; all four reinstatement requests have been rejected. After years of denial, Pete admitted that “everything” the Dowd Report contained was the complete, unadulterated truth.[

The issue of Rose’s possible reinstatement and election to the Hall of Fame remains a contentious one throughout baseball. Especially as the All Star game next season will be held in Cincinnati and Major League Baseball has approved Reds owner Bob Castellini’s request to let Rose be part of the all-star festivities. He will be permitted to participate in agreed-upon Reds celebratory events and be part of a pre-game all-star game recognition.

On September 28, 1920, eight Chicago White Sox baseball players admitted to taking bribes to let the Cincinnati Reds win the 1919 World Series. It came to be known as the “Black Sox scandal” and it was devastating for baseball fans.

What has this to do with us, well the MLB took a dim view about gambling, in fact legendary ball players like Mickey Mantle and Ty Cobb both retired and both in no way involved in baseball anymore, were banned in 1983 after they were hired by casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey, as greeters and autograph signers, Pete Rose who was a good hard working player and loved by all baseball fans suffered as a result of this view.

Unfortunately for Pete, who was a member of the Order of DeMolay as a young boy, this order derives its name from Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, even that can’t help him, pity there isn’t a Speculative Society in the States.

Meanwhile, we have a club that has been allowed to cheat for years, in fact probably encouraged, who are suspected of cheating through a tax evasion scheme has now had 2 players that admitted to gambling and only received the proverbial slap on the wrist.

The people who run our game are not fit for purpose and should be removed from office.
