The Celtic Globetrotters

I don’t know what the commercial value of our summer games against Barcelona, Leicester City and Inter Milan are, but those three games are sure to dwarf the earnings we make from domestic media and prize money for the whole of next season.

TV rights for English Premier League football from next season will average just above £7m per game, that’s for each of the 10 games on the weekly card – Sweet Georgia Brown! The actual value of these varies enormously: Watford v Bournemouth has practically no commercial value, all the real value is added by games between big clubs – even the likes of Newcastle, who are a poor team, but one which many colours of football fans still want to watch.

In a different environment, TV rights for Celtic games would be north of that £7m per game figure (the increased exposure would also geometrically improve commercial rights values). Think what we could do with that kind of money…….. more paper towels in the gents, maybe, the possibilities are limitless!

Our position is far from unique, there are a dozen or so European teams of similar size who have been marginalised from what was once a meritocratic game, so change must (always) remain on our agenda. But for now, we have to make what we can from our role as the Celtic Globetrotters.

  1. “Is that you’re final answer?’ Chris Tarrant used to ask contestants on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

So, their final answer is that they are the same club, despite it being quite obvious that they are not.

    Same club, remember that.

Personally I’m quite relaxed about the shareholders in a club who are members of a national association that is itself a member of UEFA, asking questions of UEFA when there is good reason those questions cannot be ignored without consequences.

It would be much preferable if it was the club asking as that would save some more hoops (see what I did there) to go through, like for example ( and God forbid) another resolution from a much more widely informed shareholder based.

For me it’s about putting information in front of folk to make a decision. Deal with or ignore but consider the consequences of both especially if what is ignored surfaces in a criminal court near you and you really shouldnt have ignored.

But if the package ain’t delivered a decision ain’t going to get made.

I’ve seen the stuff Mr Reiver sent to UEFA. It’s excellent but without locus he has no leverage. We have, we are shareholders in a business whose share value may have lowered as the result of actions of a rival business under same national association answerable to UEFA for any breaches in their rules.

Res12 has many layers and full accountability would be the icing on the cake but even having it as an ingredient would be a huge step forward.

I have little doubt that the Board are attempting to run the Club in a proper & fitting manner. The problem arises because the Board doesn’t share the antipathy that many fans have against the Hun. WE remember the heartaches of the cheating years and we want revenge. The Board doesn’t see it that way.

People say here our Board could have buried the Hun forever, that is nonsense it would have needed the majority of Clubs in Scotland to unite in common purpose to achieve that and that was never going to happen.

People here accuse our Board of chasing the Bigot Pound but the reality is every Club in Scotland wants a bit of that action.

Our Board could do more and I would like to see major changes and fans representatives on the Board, I would also like to see more balance on the Blog.

That subject of Catholic Civil servants reminds me of a comment of a fellow non Catholic Interview Board member in 1980 when interviewing Lanarkshire’s finest youngsters for jobs in Inland Revenue and ODA.

Quite unconsciously and with no malice he turned to me and said that he was quite impressed with the standard of applicants from Catholic schools!

As a product of same schooling I smiled to myself thinking there are a lot more from where they came from mate.

  8. Corkcelt

Res 12 isn’t about der Hun.

What happens if (or perhaps that should be ‘when’) UEFA politely declines our shareholders’ request for it to have a serious look at Res 12, saying, ‘Sorry, chaps, matters like this need to be raised by a member club’?

If Celtic (PLC) continues to play dumb to the blatant injustice of what has been going on, many of us will face a genuine dilemma.

Personally speaking, if we don’t get the board – that’s the board of OUR club, remember, without whom it/we would be nothing – to see sense on this (i.e. that it needs to act – and be seen to act – in order to avoid the heavy accusation of having been complicit in making the game a mockery by its tacit acceptance of SFA chicanery), I imagine I and many others will probably stop following the game; a game I have hugely enjoyed following (and helped financed, in my own humble way) for 50+ years.

It may break my heart to do so, but I’ve anguished over this for long enough and simply can’t escape the conclusion that Celtic PLC’s mantra of us being ‘A Club like no other’ would have been turned into a cynical slogan, directed at mere ‘customers’.

The self-same mantra would actually have been rendered meaningless by the board’s decision to choose a solely commercial direction for its stewardship; it would be a choice devoid of self-awareness, historical perspective, or a moral dimension and contemptuous towards the vast majority of the support who do actually see Celtic as much more than a mere business.

We would, in effect, have become a club just like all the others.

However, I would be loathed to take such a course of action without some kind of fight: I hope enough of us who feel strongly about this will be prepared to make a ‘last stand’ and be ready to take to the proverbial barricades to protest against the current board, should the situation described above come to pass.

I sincerely hope it won’t come to that but, just in case, I hope enough of us are already asking ourselves this question …

    Auldheid,

The difference, as you say, between Res12 and Reiver’s work, is the fact that Res12 is shareholders, effectively, club owners, rather than Reivers non aligned missive.

I should have known that you lads would have been aware of that.

Thanks for the reassurance and use of my Sunday name!

Going back to Rogic’s flukey winner for a minute.

One of the Sky pundits, Provan or Thompson, remarked that the Killie player, the former Real Madrid star, got caught on the wrong side of Tom, taking himself out of the game.

Actually, what happened was that the boy anticipated that Rogic was going to take the ball on his right foot and turn to his left; the more natural turn.

However, he turned the opposite way, and perfectly teed himself up for his sclaff.

Interesting that Celtic do not mention Sevco in the Ticket information article. I have often wondered what level of awareness there is at Board level re calling them `Rangers`. The ticket article strongly suggests that there is a strong awareness. It also suggests that the numbers who do not want reference to`Rangers` is high enough for the Board to take notice. Like I said. Interesting.

    Beautifully put.

Ethos and ethics have the same derivation.

What in my eyes stood Celtic apart from others was a sense of sharing the same ethics and so shared values – honesty, decency, caring etc, etc.

It would be extremely heart breaking to find out after decades of supporting Celtic that our ideal was not shared across the board.

Given that the CL qualifiers start before our domestic competitive football, do you think that the best preparation is playing games amongst ourselves or playing games against CL level opposition?

Assuming it’s that latter – do you think it’s best to play those games behind closed doors (which would be one option) or to get increased revenue and media coverage for doing so.

Again if you see the latter as a better option. Do you think playing at home, or a short flight away (there and back on the same day) is better than going to another continent?

I genuinely struggle to see how Celtic fans could find a negative with our inclusion in the ICC.

Your reply to Thomthethim gives some comfort that UEFA might consider investigating the matters germane to Resolution 12. On that basis has consideration been given to the PR on the submission.

I assume that the submission will be mailed International Data with a requirement for receipt to be issued on delivery. However, would it be an idea to alert Swiss TV and sports media and have a delegation, with banner and copies of detailed complaints anent Resolution 12, possibly translated into German for issue outside UEFA HQ. This could be financed by crowd funding from CQN contributors.

    Any thoughts?

PS I would not depend on a third party legal case against SF A actually proceeding. Rats in a sack come to mind.
