The Celtic oxygen

604

In a month full of events which resonate with the spirit which inspired those who formed Celtic Football Club, last night’s Wee Oscar 4 Life race night at the Kerrydale Suite was as special as it gets.  Those who were there know they gathered as a community to help the family of Oscar Knox do whatever they can to help the four-year-old through his illnesses.

If you were there, you were magnificent.  Those who decided they would give their time and resources to organise the event are an inspiration to us all.  It was great to hear Bobby Petta talk about the Celtic support in glowing terms.  He has been back in Glasgow for a couple of years and is very much at home in Celtic.  Treble-winning-captain-Tom-Boyd and Frank McAvennie didn’t need to learn about the Celtic support, they were born into it.  Both were there to help and ensure the night was a success.

Performances of the night came from Oscar’s dad, Stephen, Kris Commons’ partner, Lisa and our very own Minx, who sounded like she had presented Children In Need for the last 20 years.  Lisa, who is heavily pregnant, inspired the room with an uncommon touch of humanity.

By late in the evening the total raised was over £25k.  Another simply stunning day in Paradise.

I’ve been offline for most of the last couple of days but have picked up on some of the issues surrounding the Green Brigade.  What I haven’t missed is a single minute of action at Celtic Park this season but I’ve not seen a single incident of crowd trouble or alarm.  This season our games could be ‘policed’ by stewards alone, so it is beyond curious as to why police have any interest in Celtic supporters at all.

Football operations the like of which have been reported are not the actions of officers on the ground, they are a political dictate from very high up the food chain.  There is neither justification nor plausible motivation for using our tax money in this way.

  1. Regarding the Govan Emerald statement.

There are a number of possibilities.

    1. The statement is a lie and the events as described did not happen. I’d be inclined to discount this possibility. based on my experience of the CSC.

    2. The events did happen but the policeman was lying, possibly in an attempt to deflect attention from the motivation of the police or possibly to drive a wedge between the support and the board, or just to sow the seed of doubt. If this is the case the board have to take action.

    3. The events did happen as described. If this is the case the support have to take action.

A post and a half thank you for that, I do wish that our Celtic board speaks up though, the accusation is there, it’s clear, concise and I for one need to know if they are the victims in this or are they victimising me. We shall here from our club very soon I’d think.

  4. A few things

    1. If the Celtic management are using the Police to get to members of the GB they should be fired

    2. There is nothing wrong with Celtic wanting an end to Republican songs at games

    3. The GB should hire Findlay (think of the symbolisim) for legal action to stop the curtailment of civil liabilities.

    4. The GB should use the heid and stop giving ammo to their enemies

    5. Celtic should come out and either deny or admit that the GB statement is true.

  5. Paul 67

If you have the ear of any board member you might want to ask them to address the issue of victimisation that the GB appear to be suffering, not to do so when the club is on the up will split the support

“Mr Mulholland went on to say, “If there is sufficient, credible and reliable evidence to show that the crime was motivated by particular hate, that aggravation will be libelled in the charge and will not be deleted as a result of plea negotiation – unless there are exceptional circumstances…”

This comment explains why the PF refused to accept the proposed pleas of guilty to assault and breach of the peace, but without the “hate-crime” elements. In an effort, as Joanne pondered, to mark how seriously religious “hate-crime” is taken in Scotland, the PF will pursue it as long as there is even only one apparently “credible and reliable” witness making the accusation.”

Mr Mulholland being the Lord Advocate.

If your take on it is correct, I hold my hands up. However, how often do we (collectively) find ourselves in disagreement over the way things have been reported, and not just in the tabloids. If you were paranoid you might think there was a move to divide us …

Celtic, and by extension all paying customers who attend matches at Celtic Park, pay for the Strathclyde Police to police the matches. It would be prudent to request a full break down of policing costs, and whether the extra resources being used to ‘police’ the green brigade are being paid for by Celtic. If they are, then Celtic are well within their rights to seek a full investigation and subsequent report into the policing of the Green Brigade.

If Celtic are not paying for the extra policing of the Green Brigade, questions need to be asked of Strathclyde police as to whether they have a warrant and/or permission to undertake additional policing on private property, outwith the contractual obligations for normal matchday policing.

Neil Lennon attacker receives ‘not proven’ verdict over sectarian charge

A Hearts fan who attacked the Celtic football manager, Neil Lennon, on the touchline during a game between the two clubs has escaped conviction for a sectarian attack but has been found guilty of breach of the peace.

John Wilson, 26, was prosecuted for assault aggravated by religious prejudice at the Hearts stadium in Edinburgh last May, days after it emerged Lennon had been targeted by potentially lethal parcel bombs.

Edinburgh sheriff’s court heard evidence from Peter Croy, the Hearts’ head of security, that Wilson shouted “Lennon, you Fenian bastard” as he was being restrained on the touchline, moments after striking Lennon on the head.

Lennon told the court the assault was a “tipping point” after months of death threats, including live bullets sent in the post, and angry confrontations during Rangers games.

Describing the incident on 11 May, Lennon told the jury: “I felt like a glancing blow to the corner above the left eye.

“It all happened very quickly, I went into a defence position to avoid the contact, whatever way he was off balance so he was lying in front of me on the ground.”

However, Wilson emphatically denied the sectarianism charge and the jury returned a “not proven” verdict, a decision in the Scottish system which stops short of declaring a defendant innocent of the offence.

Wilson admitted attacking Lennon and said it was “a moment of madness” brought on by his frustration at another Celtic goal in the game and refereeing decisions. He insisted members of his family were Catholic.

Television footage of Wilson’s assault was widely broadcast as it emerged soon after that five parcel bombs had been sent to various prominent Celtic fans and Catholics, sparking a major police operation.

  17. I don’t believe that the GB issue will split the support it will unite us. The GB has done absolutely nothing wrong as numerous failed prosecutions highlight.

The only parties with a vested interest in suppressing the GB are the Scottish Nazi Party (SNP) and the last vestiges of the ‘old order’. Hopefully the lingering suspicions that PL and the board are using Machiavellian guile to destroy of the GB are unfounded.

Just in case – a wee thought for PL and the board – “beware the risen people”

  18. I agree the harassment is a disgrace. But there are two points at issue here – the victimisation with an unknown catalyst or agenda (which is what most people have attached themselves to with their justifiable protest), and secondly the less talked about willingness or not of the Green Brigade to engage with the Club.

At some point (and this will no doubt be unpopular) the Green Brigade need to justify why their self proclaimed right to stand and lateral movement beats current health and safety legislation which sees Celtic under immediate and real threat of ground closure and financial sanction.

I have a friend and neighbour, a Celtic supporting policeman, who is an exceptionally good guy. Met him coming out of mass at the weekend. Brief take on the police position as he knows it (and he is not involved with the divisions that cover football) is that Celtic have indeed engaged the police in health and safety in ‘section 111′. The club’s own attempts to control and engage with the Green Brigade have met with a blank from the GB. The H&S breaches will not be tolerated any more.by the authorities. Ergo enforcement.

Now don’t get me wrong, this does not justify the type of treatment they currently receive, and whether there is a 2nd and 3rd agenda re singing or political motive I do not know, or whether the police have been given an inch and taken a mile, or receive further instruction from government I cannot say.

But the GB do themselves no favours with the ‘ourselves alone’ attitude to the Club I’m afraid.

What would you do if you were Peter Lawwell? The Green Brigade are fabulous for Celtic, a revelation. But they won’t engage willingly. You do not know their structure or their plans, or what he next banner will say. One has already seen you fined and warned by UEFA, others have had you in front of the SFA. One has of course recently been received with awe across Europe. So what next? Ride the rollercoaster? Wait and see if the HSE follow up with their threat? How much of the ground would they close? How much will the fine be? How long would they close the whole ground were there to be a tragic accident? Would the directors be up for personal liability?

So rather then boycotts how about the Green Brigade engage with the Club, Willingly. And maybe, just maybe, meet the club half way on its Health and Safety requests. Then we can more clearly identify the agenda of others and tackle it.

  20. kitalba -10:09 on 19 November, 2012

I know Wilson admitted the assault.

My point as the quote states, is that the PF refused to allow the lesser charge of assault and that proving that any type of crime was actually motivated by religious hatred, rather than merely involving an element of it, would be very hard to prove.

I actually think that refusal by the PF is more serious than any possible bias within the jury.

  21. Football stadium closed and board members fined because of lateral movement by supporters.

Its ARMAGEDDON I tell you, ARMAGEDDON!

  22. If Celtic had been drawn against Arbroath at Gayfield Stadium, would ‘lateral movement’ be scorned by Health and Safety?

How come you are allowed to stand and sway in the lower leagues but you can’t do likewise in the SPL? Are the fans in the lower leagues more trust-worthy?

It was open to the jury to return a verdict of assault. Simple assault. No religious aggravation.

The PF couldn’t prevent them doing that.

It’s what they did with the breach of the peace charge. They deleted the religious aggravation part.

Bhoys – please don’t misunderstand me – I am not saying the Board are perfect by any means.

The Board may well be worthy of critcism on a number of fronts, but it is well down the pecking order when viewed against the sometimes overtly hostile and antagonistic political, media and civil background that we operate in.

There is an endemic drive in some quarters to harm Celtic and the Celtic support, and to protect or save (some form of) The Rangers – that endemic drive does not eminate from within Celtic, even if they could perhaps do more to resist it. I am not particularly standing up for the Board – that is not really the point I was making.

I think the fact that yer security man from Hearts said what he said and was to all intents ignored, and that the whole world saw what happened and it is not surprising that foreigners can’t understand us when our courts redifine blatant assualt – breach of the peace. The guy admitted in court to the assualt, he walked with a breach of the peace on his record.
