The Celtic supporter’s substantial heritage

374

And, after a century, it happened again. On Saturday, 4 November 2017, Celtic set a new British football record, 63 games undefeated, eclipsing the 62 game record set by the same team in 1917, under its first manager, Willie Maley. A million Celtic fans lived and died, and didn’t see such overwhelming command of the game in Scotland.

Many of those saw nine-in-a-row and the European Cup, but they also saw the 50s, or the 90s, or both, when humbling defeat was a staple part of the Celtic diet.

The football has been scintillating with those 63 games packed with joy: the recent 0-3 at Pittodrie, the dramatic 3-4 at Fir Park, thrashing Newco 5-1 home and away, and the joy-of-joys, winning an Invincible treble with a last minute goal.

Brendan Rodgers has only been here for one title in our run of six-in-a-row, but go speak to those who were around when Jock Stein was bearing down on seven-in-a-row in 1972. The joie de vivre of yet another title, yet another run to the European Cup semi-final, was beginning to fade. Stein struggled to replace his Lions as the crown weighed increasingly heavily on the head of a new King.

What Brendan brings to the search for seven-in-a-row, and his second treble, is a freshness denied to Stein. Jock sailed straight for the sun after joining Celtic in March 1965, winning a treble, two League Cups, two (of three) Scottish Cups and that European title. We have a manager who works as though he has a point to prove and players battling for their place right across the team.

It is fitting that we reflect on breaking our own 100-year record today, the 130th anniversary of the meeting which took place in the parish hall of St Mary’s, Calton, where it was decided to establish a football club called Celtic, to raise funds to feed the impoverished children of the city.

Despite the timeless monuments to success Celtic have achieved throughout a glittering history, without that poverty, your football club would not have come into existence. If you are a Celtic supporter, your world, your very person, is a product of 19th century deprivation. Your responsibility as a fan is to nurture the substantial heritage you were given, to make our founding mission grander than anyone could imagine on 6 November 1887.

    NATKNOW @ 10:17 PM,

I don’t watch or listen to the BBC very much these days. In fact if it was them and not a German Newspaper that received the Paradise Papers I’m sure they would have been buried.

In fact I’m sure there is a lot there for “UK” interest that they haven’t quite found yet and won’t until someone else highlights it.

But after reading about this, I thought I’d browse their website… DD gets more Space than our Head of State… Quite impressive.

If you are looking for a reason then this quote may be a pointer…

“Mr Desmond tries to keep out of the spotlight but his public profile is boosted considerably by his position at Celtic Football Club in Glasgow.”

So Mr Desmond, if you want your affairs discreet you’d better get out of Glasgow eh!

Wonder how DD responds to threats, even the veiled ones?

Anything that keeps the focus off sevco 2012 accounts is a boost for the LL in this country .

I remember being enraged about them going nowhere near the old dead club and the knight of the realms dealings with them .

Then I realised that they had in fact helped cause the death of their beloved club by treating the old ragers supporters like mushrooms (keeping them in the dark and feeding them s**te.

Looks very much to me as if history is about to repeat itself .

  8. Celtic is a PLC. DD is the major shareholder with, I think, 34% of the voting shares. Celtic received prior permission from the Stock Exchange to permit DD to take ownership of more than 30%. There is no doubt that he controls Celtic plc.

We would obviously prefer any directors/owners to have “ethical” investments and to pay their taxes. But wtf has any of this to do with Celtic? Is DD not domiciled in Switzerland? Perhaps Mr Daley could take his scoop to Zurich and find out how offended the Swiss taxpayers are?

  9. Ger57

Is it the case that any tax not `saved` would have gone to Switzerland and not the UK treasury?

    GER57 et al

No-one disputes that avoidance of tax is a serious problem, one which successive governments worldwide have done little to tackle. Indeed, tax competitiveness-beggar thy neighbour!-has long been a goal of many.

The Paradise Papers draw attention to many instances of this, with some firms in the frame for tens of billions and more,or individuals such as Lewis Hamilton avoiding €4m on a single purchase.

BBC Scotland focused its entire attack on one man,not even Scottish, never resident here. For “having an interest in”-i.e.,not even owning-a company which hit the SWISS taxpayer for around £1m over three years.

Or ten good nights out in Glasgow with Campbell Ogilvie.

Or 40% of the sum owed to the BRITISH taxpayer by one of its own regular contributors/employees,Barry Ferguson.

It was a shocking hatchet job,one which I feel may have breached its own charter, and I don’t think we’ve heard the last of it.

  11. Cosy Corner Bhoy on

Moyes as manager at West Ham is an oxymoron. He couldn’t manage a ménage when under any pressure whatsoever. He won’t save them from relegation.

The ‘man to go to’ to avoid relegation from the EPL is Big Sam.

When he was dismissed by the FA I told everyone he would be hired before Christmas by some team in the bottom five.. enter Crystal Palace.

Sh.te to watch but gets you out thr doo-doo!!!

  12. CCB.

I thought the huns might have gone for Sam. He would have checked under the bonnet to make sure his wages were safe, so no go.

It’s really fun to watch and listen to huns just now. Complete delusion and no hope. Meanwhile we are the best fans in the world. official, and Brendan is unbeaten in 63 domestic games. Champions League glamour fixtures, Celtic Park looking superb to a worldwide audience, £40m extra income. YEE ha!!!

No wonder the huns are hurting. Shame. innit??

  13. BMCUW

Thanks for that. Your post really shows the BBC`s intent via their prejudiced selection of DD to make their point. Astonishing.

    JJ

  14. Big Sam to Everton, apparently. bargain at £100,000 a week, and Shakespeare ( the ex Leicester boss, not the ex Stratford Bard) as his assistant. Once you get on the managerial roundabout down there, you’re made for life.

  15. Hot Smoked

Exactly. It looks like BBC Scotland has an agenda just now. When you look at what else is happening, it beggars belief that so much time is given to a non story. Deflect the masses and slag off Celtic in one cheap go? Ideal for the ludgers. DD might come back to bite their arses.

  16. ALMORE on 6TH NOVEMBER 2017 10:26 PM

Tax avoiders, who can easily afford to pay their taxes – no matter what team they support- are every bit as bad as tax evaders.

    ———————

Completely agree. However we need the political will to eradicate the loopholes.

  17. It may be that The Great Desmondo is the only person in the Paradise Papers with any link to Scotland, however tenuous, and that is the reason why BBC Scotland have featured him.

The ambush interview was entirely predictable, given that written requests for a response had been ignored.

Whether the same would have been done if it had involved someone connected to the huns is however a moot point.

  18. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    GREENPINATA

I think the political will has long been there, and certainly the public would view it as a vote-catcher. But in the age of electronic money-transfer,it requires that will to be world-wide.

Certain countries have not helped over the years-Ireland,Netherlands,Luxembourg,Switzerland have a long history of nakedly pulling in corporate and individual wealth with personalised low-tax agreements, and the UK has an even longer history of offshore possessions where no questions are asked, bar “How much?”

Now we have the late-to-the-party countries like Cyprus,Malta and The Baltic States joining in,the problem widens and worsens. But the vast majority of tax-havens are controlled by EU countries and the US. If the EU,as one,and the US act together, they could close these any time they like.

Maybe it will be discussed at Davos over Christmas.
