The costs of dropping Giakoumakis for Kyogo

237

All going well, in the weeks ahead, Ange Postecoglou will consider replacing his current Most Valuable Player – Giorgos Giakoumakis – with his MVP from the first half of the season, Kyogo Furuhashi.

It is easy to forget how early we are in the formation of this Celtic team.  Daizan Maeda and Reo Hatate are only here two months, Matt O’Riley less than that.  None have teamed up with Kyogo, they have spent little time with playing with Yosuke Ideguchi, James Forrest or David Turnbull.

That bizarrely easy win in February over Newco implied the new model had a maturity that was not there yet.  A month of indifferent performances followed, with a harsh truth delivered by Bodo/Glimt.  On good surfaces and against Premiership opposition, the system is again looking fabulous.

A big part of this system is what Giakoumakis gives us in the air – two headed goals and one headed assist on Saturday.  Without him, we have the appearance of a front line that could not jump and touch the crossbar.  We would also lose an additional strong defender at set-pieces.

The temptation to make Kyogo the new focus could be overwhelming, he was that impressive.  He brings things to Celtic we have not seen in years.  Question is, what will the costs be of dropping Giorgos, or rejigging the entire setup to fit both in?

  1. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    WHAT IS THE STARZ ….

    Was at the 4-4 game.

Remember the live match well and the Scotsport highlights.

There was certainly replays of MacLeod’s equaliser.

    Was an eventful game.

3-1 up and cruising when Willie McStay was sent off after fouling Kevin McMinn.

We proceeded to collapse, losing 3 terrible goals until Murdo’s intervention.

Significantly, that was the last time we dropped points that season.

We won our last eight and took the title.

    Happy memories.

Hopefully portents for this season’s end.

Apparently the elusive Moderator pulled one of my posts yesterday for bad language.

Any way Mr Moderator have you still not contacted Big Jimmy and told him he is banned?

    Or even answered his email?

    Poor very poor.

You are letting crackpots post utter political tripe and lies about covid plus allow posters to have multiple monikers.

Can you inform me what bad language I used and I will refrain from using it in the future.

There was a personal attack from a poster last week I brought to your attention and nothing was done, is it only when you can be bothered policing.

I do not expect any return information as your communications with posters is very poor.

Scotland playing the winners of Wales – Austria as a friendly next week, that really is the proverbials.

Scotland will play the LOSERS of the Wales v Austria WC Qualifier in a friendly next week, not the winners.

The winners will play Scotland or Ukraine for a WC spot in June after the rearranged Hampden showdown.

  5. I take that as a personal attack.

The draw for the 2022 WORLD CUP takes place on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Wales are at home to Austria. The winners will be in the draw with Scotland & Ukraine in the bottom pot of seeds.

Scotland are due to play Ukraine at Hampden on Saturday 4th June with the winners away to Wales or Austria on Tuesday 7th June for the place in the finals.

  7. Fairhillbhoy – From last night you say poor show David.

I will accept from other posters (good guys) like yourself if I stepped over the line, but I seriously dont think I did and cannot even remember the poor show you talk about.

Point is I have no respect for Paul or the Mods who run this site, I think most are in the same boat.

I do enjoy most posts and it is a great avenue to talk to Celtic minded people but Paul and The Mods have lost the supervision on certain posters and posts and once you loose supervision the games up.

Moderator1888 has explained clearly, on more than one occasion, that it is not within his remit or his authority to ban posters that others find annoying. He is here to moderate and remove posts that include bad language, as a joke of mine did a couple of weeks ago and was duly removed.

Only Paul67 can ban posters, although no doubt Moderator1888 has the option of recommending that a poster be banned.

With respect, I think you should let it go as constantly badgering for action is just getting you nowhere.

Celtic legend, Bertie Auld was born on this day 84 years ago in Maryhill, an area that meant almost as much to him as Celtic Park did.

Here we revisit an interview with the inimitable Bertie who sadly passed away last November.

    COMING HOME

Some people might say that the highlight of my Celtic career was the 1967 season, but I always look back to when I returned here from Birmingham in ‘65. I had always believed that I would come back and all of a sudden I arrived on a Monday morning, to meet Jimmy McGrory again and also Tommy Riley and Sean Fallon. I flew up that morning with my wife and my daughter and dropped them off in Knightswood at my mother-in-law’s. I then went to Celtic Park, put on one of the old grey training tops, a pair of sandshoes, shorts and socks and went out and loosened up. Jimmy then came out with Sean and Tommy and everything just fell into place. As far as I was concerned, Jimmy McGrory was the most honest man I ever met. You only had to look at him to know what he was thinking and he was Celtic through and through. Even just putting on the training gear that day and going out for a run, I felt that I had ‘arrived’. There might have been ups and downs, but from that day on things just seemed to click into place.

    FAVOURITE GROUNDS

There were two or three grounds that I loved to play at, apart from Celtic Park and one was Cathkin, Third Lanark’s ground. That’s all closed up now, but that was a great place to play, because they always had a team who would try to play football against you and would lift their game. Dens Park in Dundee was another magnificent ground, as was Tynecastle in Edinburgh. Those games always felt like cup finals and there was no love lost in any of the games we played. They were always end to end, with no tackles pulled. Kilmarnock games were a bit like that as well and Rugby Park was another great place to play. But the quality of player during that era of Scottish football was outstanding, there was an abundance of talent. It was an era when people came in their droves to watch the games and it was a fabulous time to play in.

    TOUGHEST OPPONENT

There was one player who never gave me a kick of the ball and I must have played against him around about half-a-dozen times. Albert Murphy was definitely my toughest opponent. He was an Irishman who played for Clyde and what a player he was, he was long before his time and was like Danny McGrain – with a bit more height. He was a magnificent player. He went back to Ireland when he finished playing and had so much passion, so much ability and charisma, but was not egotistical. He was certainly the best full back I ever played against.

    LISBON

It wasn’t until Celtic took us all back to the Estadio National in 2007 for the game against Benfica that I really started to remember the build-up to the European Cup final. Standing in the tunnel, the memories just started to flood back. I could remember sitting in this big, dark dressing room, with the noise and excitement all around me. The ones who looked the least excited were the ones who were going to play, they all had this calmness about them. Then we walked out into the tunnel, 30 yards up to the steps leading out to the pitch and they then kept us there until everything was ready. I can remember wee Jimmy looking them up and down and talking about the size they were. Now when we were at home, on the bus going to games, we used to sing Celtic songs and that’s what came to me that night. It was second nature and I just started to sing ‘The Celtic Song’. We started in a quiet, low, deep voice and then, by the final verse, Pavarotti would have been proud of us!

    THE CELTIC SUPPORT

There were two great rewards that I have enjoyed from being a part of that Celtic team, the first is the closeness we have and we are such great friends. The second thing is actually something that my Dad said would happen when I signed in 1955 and he told me that if I did well, then I would become a part of that Celtic support. The people who gathered every week to watch us on the terraces, they were a part of us, as much as we were a part of them. That’s why I have always said that we are ‘a family’. The Celtic supporters were fantastic, they came to us when we were in need and supported us at all times and we will always appreciate that.

DAVID GRAHAM, HANG YOUR HEAD IN SHAME

    Hi David

You’ll remember me. I’m your ex friend who used to collect your tickets from the ticket office and make sure they were safely in the District Bar for your arrival where we’d meet for a beer and a catch up. Not seen you in there for a while.

I’m your ex friend who texted to wish you the best of luck on the day of your appointment at Rangers only to get a call from you soon after accusing me of selling a story about investment and threatening that “it wouldn’t look good for me” if a private text you’d received from a journalist which included my name would some how become known to others. I’ll repeat what I told you then, I built up relationships with many journalists during the protest years and if any of them texted you suggesting you should ask me about the things they done for the campaign then I’d have no problem in educating you on their credentials.

Anyway, enough of the introductions and back to why you should hang your head in shame.

Yesterday you penned a club Statement that would have been expected of the old board in the days when Jack Irvine was the PR man for the most despised board in our 150 years. Jack Irvine however is an experienced PR man who, despite being highly controversial, understands how damning the words you used yesterday to describe and threaten Rangers fans would inevitably have zero positive outcome. You managed to do the club more harm than those you suggest are acting to harm the club.

In any other business you’d have been frogmarched out the front door for even suggesting publishing such an attack and threats to that business’s life blood. The only logical reason that you are still in employment today is that your ultimate boss must have the same distain for the rank and file as you obviously have.

Your ability to coattail others has been remarkable. You seem to have a great ability to utilise relationships to get you access to someone of greater importance. The unfortunate side of your character allows you to soon forget those you coat-tailed.

You arrived on the back of a “no surrender” video and had us believe you’d be taking the fight to others. My only recollection of you taking any fight to anyone was a teenage blogger while those intent on writing bollocks about our club still do so at will.

Your abuse of fan media is worth noting as you’ve actually set these guys up for a fall because of the amount of pure lies you’ve fed them which they’ve accepted as gospel and passed on to the rank and file as the truth.

Earlier in your stepping up career you promised the good people of Belfast that you’d serve them well and do your best for your community as a DUP councillor. You were touted as a potential Mayor of Belfast which would have gave you the ultimate opportunity to do so yet, unknown to many, you were looking for a way out and an unsuccessful attempt to become Linfields General Manager months later only delayed your u turn in your promises of looking after your people.

Now you seem happy to forget those people you went to games with and stood beside supporting your team with, the rank and file. Your words used to describe them as “rump” and use of inverted comas around “supporters” suggests those who don’t toe the part line are not proper supporters. Does that mean those ignored by the board and seen simply as a cash cow are now to be considered the enemy of the club because they won’t bow down and accept every decision the club make without the right to question and debate?

You taught history David. You’re now creating history but instead of being remembered like a brave man of the Somme as you’d like to be you’re going down in the books as a spin doctor for Kim Jong-Un.

Your threat yesterday to deal with the disrupters and their propaganda war at the end of the season is laughable. I’ve no idea if I am one of the “rump” that you intend to target but I certainly hope I am because I’ve spent near a decade telling the Rangers fans the truth despite being arrested, sued and threatened with my life for doing so. That won’t stop me because it doesn’t suit you or your employers agenda.

I thought I’d retired from campaigning but your threats and insults yesterday have made me change my mind. I’m out of retirement and stand proudly with the rump.

  23. From the BBC…(apologies if undesirable)

Statistics show Celtic receive the fewest cards per foul while Hibernian are punished the most. (Scotsman – subscription required)

    ————————————————————

Worded in such a way that suggests Celtic are punished the least. Mmm.

A cynic might suggest that this statistic is borne from the fact that Celtic are punished the MOST in regards to the quantity of fouls given against us – you know, the niggly ones that are nowhere near bookable; but help to disrupt the flow of the game; the number of 50/50 challenges that result in a foul against Celtic; etc

A cynic would suggest that refs are very keen to blow the whistle and awarded free kicks against Celtic at every opportunity.

    Glad I’m not cynical…
