The Craig Whyte narrative. Kris, Leo.

1626

Best news of the day?  Kris Commons wants to be involved tomorrow against Barcelona.  I doubt Kris is anywhere near match fit, so there’s no chance of him starting on Wednesday against Astana, but a 15 minute cameo, when the Astana players’ body clocks are telling them it’s after 2am, would go down a treat.

I’ve always been a bit more ambivalent about Leonel Messi than most.  “He’s not hit the levels of Ronaldinho” is my stock comment, and then there’s the dirty little subject.  (Tax).

But his media comments ahead of tomorrow’s International Champions Cup game, “I have a Celtic jersey at home. The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them”, proves there’s substance to the man.

I’ve a Celtic jersey at home too, Leo.  A few of us here do.

Former-Rangers former vice-chairman Donald Findlay is to defend Craig Whyte is his forthcoming trial.

Whyte’s urban legend is going to be difficult to shift, but it’s not accurate.  We mocked Rangers fans a few years ago, referring to him as “Our Hero” but he never was.  He was the bag man for a very dirty job.

How he handled the SFA, Uefa, HMRC and, most crucially, the insolvency court, when he managed to secure the appointment of Duff and Phelps as Rangers administrators was crucial in the continuation of football at Ibrox.

It was Duff and Phelps who gave Newco the right to use the name “Rangers”, after which point Whyte could claim he was passing on “Rangers”.  Everyone else mocked this liquidation fantasy at the time.  Until liquidation became a reality, that is.

Whyte left Newco relatively safe in the hands of Charles Green, where it would have thrived, if it hadn’t faced a hostile and damaging takeover bid from its first week of life.

Our auction prize, donated by (the pretty fabulous) Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, closes just after 1pm today.

You can win:

2 seats in the directors’ box

Champagne reception

5 course meal in the Walfrid Suite

Fully expenses bar (pre and post-match)

Half time snacks and refreshments

Car Parking

At the game against Kilmarnock on 24 September.

Money raised from the auction will go towards building a school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals. It it will be the 5th CQN school kitchen.

Our four existing kitchens feed over 2000 primary aged kids every day. School attendance has increased 30% since kitchens were built, as kids attend for their daily meal. This has an impact on health, education and life chances.

You can follow the auction on eBay here.  Thank you.

I’m off to Aberdour now for the 12th annual CQN Golf Open.  I’ll be the one holding the jackets.

See you then.

In the 3 years I have frequented this blog you are guaranteed of two things from our host.

Nothing will be Peter Lawwells fault and Kris Commons will be praised beyond his worth.

300 grand and 93 goals later,,,,,,,,

‘Actually the jury found the assailant ‘Not Proven’ of the charge of assault and breach of the peace, both of which were aggravated by religious prejudice. The issue was the “religious prejudice” element that was tacked on – a decision by the prosecutors which created the ‘loophole’ – and of course the crazy Scottish ‘Not Proven’ verdict,’

    ###

    1. It was open to the jury to convict of assault alone, deleting the reference to religious aggravation. The jury knew this. They did it with the breach of the peace charge.

    2. There’s nothing crazy about the not proven verdict. It’s more logical than the not guilty verdict. It’s also the original verdict in Scotland. The not guilty verdict came later, at the behest of juries.

… £10m and a heated driveway later our turnover continues to shrink?

  5. Turkeybhoy, A very aggressive straight forward poster, added a lot to blog, hope he reconsiders decision to leave.

Guys playing down Messi, pure pish, probably the greatest player of all time, certainly the greatest of his generation.Always had good things to say about Celtic And Celtic fans

    .

Kris was a top player for Celtic, off the field himself & Lisa were legends, obviously past his best now, deserves to see out his last season with respect & dignity.

Re posters listing players that want to stay or leave, I see nothing at all wrong with that.

  6. Did I hear right that turkeybhoy is doing a wee flounce?

Surely not. We will miss his anger and his cloth cap far too much.

  7. Hibernian manager Neil Lennon has confirmed that he is hoping to sign Israel goalkeeper Ofir Marciano and Celtic midfielder Liam Henderson.

The Scottish Championship club are in talks with 26-year-old Marciano, who was recently with Royal Mouscron in the Belgian Pro League.

Henderson spent last season on loan with Hibs from the Scottish champions.

Lennon says an approach has been made for the 20-year-old and he is waiting for a response.

Hope Liam Henderson stays and gets his chance but like Scott Allan he would be better leaving for his career’s sake if he’s not going to play. Would rather have those two than Bitton and Johansen.

  12. While I agree that Kris Commons should be treated with respect-imo, that should be a given for all who don the Hoops- I think he is well past his sell by date. He was very poor much of last season, imo. I can’t see how he would fit in to a Celtic team the way both our manager and former manager want us to play.

  13. Lionroars67

He placed a bet that Messi would be the MVP at Euro 2016.

that’s a bit like saying it’s great news that my dug wants to lick his baws today

of course he does, he’s a dug

  15. clogher celt on

The only way I could in any way understand the petulance of Commons last season (and others) might be if things tactically and professionally were so bad under RD and his staff that the senior players were in revolt.

But that is stretching it to breaking point.

  16. We couldn’t buy a striker that would score 40 goals in Scotland for £20m.

There is no value in selling Leigh Griffiths .

    TT

  17. Corkcelt I was working and haven’t seen any of the game. I was pleased with the end result but when I really step back and think about it I thinks it a measure of how low our expectations now are when it comes to Celtic that we are pleased or even relieved at a draw with Astana.

Financially they are nowhere near Celtic but gross mismanagement at Celtic has got us to the stage getting a draw against these teams is a sign of success.

Celtics lack of progress in the transfer window screams complacency, arrogance and, to be blunt, stupidity.

I’m not angry about it nor surprised by it. I’m simply bored by it now.

  18. I am often amused by the calls for civility and respect for existing players in periods of ‘downtime’ on the blog and compare it with the unabashed vitriol that Celtic players receive both online and at the Park itself.

e.g Kris Commons is a wonderful servant to the club who deserves respect to “get that fat useless fecker off, it’s like playing with a man down…..”

I believe the latter is often down to what is termed ‘stressed behaviour’……

  19. up_over_goal on

Yes, indeed. Kris exuded positive vibes throughout the match, showing more than a hint of tactical nous. My favourite moment was the goal. “Nice one, son. Chance. Get in. Boom!” – all before Cuddihy had a chance to blurt out ‘Goal!’. Speed of thought, eh?

Lafferty isn’t that dumb ? or is he

  21. Kris Commons was totally fecked about by Deila & Collins.

The season before they arrived he scored 30 goals.

I’m sure Brendan will appreciate him.

Use him in his best position ,and Celtic will reap the rewards.

Played in his best position and he will score 15 goals this season .

    IMHO

    Tt

  22. Bada bing

Nothing against Kris he has been a brilliant signing and would love to see him hit the 100 goals mark.

Paul seems to praise Kris above what he has contributed recently and I find it a tad amusing he would throw him in but thinks he’s only good for 15 minutes. That would suggest he doesn’t have the required fitness and should therefore not be selected to play.
