The curious significant of 1 June

1642

There’s something I’ve never been able to figure out for the last nine years.  When Gordon Strachan was announced as Celtic manager, on 1st June 2014, he apologised to the media for bumping their calls the previous week, as he was due to takeover on that date, and the announcement was embargoed until then.

No idea why the news was embargoed, but it was.  Tomorrow’s the 1st June.  If the same rules hold true now as when Gordon Strachan was appointed, there was little chance of an appointment in late May.

If you’re not going to the CQN 10-in-a-row Charity Golf day on 4 July the Sean’s Trust Charity Dinner is on the same night at the Fullarton Suits, Glasgow.  Sean’s Trust is run by the late St John Doyle’s partner, Linda.  If you’d like to attend let Lennybhoy know, lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

  1. Delbhoy59. I too was on the Rotterdam trip. Shared with the pollok csc ( Lisbon lions csc was a breakaway club from Uni club in about 1985) Paul lecombre his mate tam, I was 17 at the time about to turn 18. We stayed at a hotel beside a canal I sat beside a guy that I Didney know and we shared a room and he talked In his sleep

There was a few bearsden bhoys in the club, I was one of them

One if the Uni guys drunk Pernod on the ferry that came back up all over the floor of the coach as we drove through Belgium. We lost the final to feyenoord 4 3. My 1st time abroad

Yes let’s start slagging a world class name, who might want to come to Scottish football, strange but I don’t remember The Beast getting the same “welcome”.

    Emmmm…..????

  4. Sydney Tim….following up from yesterday….didn’t respond due to time differences…..

Neil didn’t get any of the Victor money?

He got money for Balde, Pukki, Boerigter and Virgil. Then more for Griffiths and Johanson.

I guess you are arguing that we should have spent more money. I think we should have gotten better value for the money we did spend.

Some of that money would have gone on new contracts for important players. Folk tend not to count these types of expenditures. Albeit they are very important.

The feeling around the ROI camp is that the job is Keane’s…….if he wants it.

If he comes, I hope he moves Stokes on, for football reasons and sorts out any Jack the Lad attitudes with the remainder.

Conversely,I think Scott Brown would be a good captain for him.

    .

I want a manager who is not the players’ “pal”, but one who inspires a touch of fear and respect.

  6. June 1st has quite the significance then?

O’Neill left Leicester on 1 June 2000,taking over from the team of John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish to become manager of Celtic,

  7. Pretty much any manager we sign should win the SPFL with the resources we have. I am hoping we use this as an opportunity to focus on our European performances. Maybe we will see a manager with experience on the European stage. Not sure this will be the view of the board. More likely a name we know like big Malky.

No matter who it is they will get my support.

    Hail Hail

  8. If Roy Keane is good enough for MON then he is good enough for me :)

Going to watch the King of King’s Falkenberg away to Helsingborgs tomorrow. Looking forward to it and gonna bring on my Magnificent 7 “Thanks for the memories” flag along from Henke’s testimonial v Seville which was played almost 10 years ago to the day (25/05/2004) . I will be a lucky man if I can manage to get it signed :)

    Hail Hail!

  9. Weeron. Indeed late at night here and a wee bit cold. Winter starts in 7 mins

Think u are forgetting Virgil straight swap for Wilson transfer fee

The 3 duds came from hoopers fee ( that worked out well eh :))). )

Indeed griffifths and johanson came in January for 3m of vics fee. But as I said Neil got he haw of vics money to strengthen at start of season for CL

  10. Decided to get Spotify.

Apart from my modern favorites it’s got lots of classical stuff.

    Just saying like.

    Aye you ;)

  11. Exciting times !! Sitting in Shanghai wondering how long I’d have to stay up tonight to hear the announcement ??? I for one am hoping it’s Keano – we need something to inject some excitement into our club and league, and Roy Keane is just the man to do it – have a feeling that he will have learned from his experiences and be a better manager for it !!

Rumour has it, the CSC in Belfast to ask if he could send a few of the players over to attend their charity night.

PL said that most of them are all on leave and therefore it wouldn’t be possible because of the schedule.

Then apparently, Peter said how about I attended myself, and a tell yous what, I’ll even ask a few of the Lions if they want to go over as well with me.

Now for a CSC that is very pro-Green Brigade to say the least – it was a magnificent gesture from Peter Lawwell and the club.

    Pure class.

  13. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Expect better from Willie Miller – “Rangers relegated to the bottom tier”. Dearie me…

  14. 16 roads that is a magnificent gesture by PL and the club. As great as it would be to spend an evening with first team players I think a couple of Lions would have better stories. .;-)

Was doing “parish duties” and listening to mp3 player.

When it dawned on me that songs I heard years ago now have a completely different meaning for me as I grow.

Cat Stevens – Father and Son Original

and almost every song I listen to now I look at differently or understand what the writer was trying to say.

apologies for going of track, but it was just one of those moments in the church.

  16. I have no problem with Roy as manager but I would have thought the board would go for someone who is likely to give youth a chance and be happy to take on projects. I think a lot of fans want someone to stand up to PL and in a sense that’s a good thing – can anyone see Keane being walked over? But not if that means turning the long term (and so far successful) strategy upside down.

I’d imagine Keane would be a MON type in terms of wanting to come in and spend big. The ruling with fear thing never works long term either. A certain amount of fear is good but the players have to like and respect you as well, hopefully, if he is the man for the job, he can achieve that.

Indeed mate, a think Bertie Auld was there.

I once seen Bertie at an event for Charlie Tully in the Rock a few years ago, and he had the crowd captivated, during and after his speech.

God bless the Lisbon Lions, and God bless the Celtic.
