The curious significant of 1 June

1642

There’s something I’ve never been able to figure out for the last nine years.  When Gordon Strachan was announced as Celtic manager, on 1st June 2014, he apologised to the media for bumping their calls the previous week, as he was due to takeover on that date, and the announcement was embargoed until then.

No idea why the news was embargoed, but it was.  Tomorrow’s the 1st June.  If the same rules hold true now as when Gordon Strachan was appointed, there was little chance of an appointment in late May.

If you’re not going to the CQN 10-in-a-row Charity Golf day on 4 July the Sean’s Trust Charity Dinner is on the same night at the Fullarton Suits, Glasgow.  Sean’s Trust is run by the late St John Doyle’s partner, Linda.  If you’d like to attend let Lennybhoy know, lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

My back feels like it belongs to a seventy year old coalman today

  2. Doc

If he is the new manger ? I’ve said before , whoever, manager or player should be fully supported at the off , everybody needs time , then judge .

I really hope because derk was so bad , getting a pre-season under his belt will help give him a chance to be clear of his injury and give him till chrimbo and then decide .

  3. Margaret McGill, it is mere speculation, no more.

And until it happens it is pish.

But as valid as any speculation.

    Only time alone will tell.

  4. big wavy 20.56…

Don’t know where you’re getting your info from but Malky was not “cack at Watford”.

One of my best pals is a Watford ST holder and they held him in the highest regard.

He managed during an ownership dispute and near administration. The fans had already decided they were for the drop and considered it miraculous that they finished 16th. Despite the best players being sold out of the club the following season they finished 14th.

His ability to use young players and find cheaper talent from elsewhere saved the club while the ownership/financial matters were eventually settled thanks in no small part to MM who was then hero worshipped!

Of course being a hero meant that there was a lot of grief and anger when he took up the job in Wales.

Interestingly he got Cardiff promoted as champions, something no one else had managed and until his demise kept them outside the EPL relegation places.

Manager ends up with a dud player is no news at all.

    Just saying!

  5. In any business, fitba included…… as it is a business in the 21st century, it is all about perception.

Roy Keane ticks EVERY box for being manager of a big team in the modern game.

I said earlier he will walk all over Lawell to get his way too……Exactly what we need.

Lenny got shafted by the biscuit tin mentality of Lawell’s balance sheet and walked because of it.

Other way about with Keano…..Lawell will be the one who walks….Good riddance too.

Quality on the park which is proportionate to our status as a big club.

  6. Margaret McGill on

See the donut once believed in the EPL holy grail in 2001 resulting in massive MON investment to prove to them lovely English folks Celtics EPL calibre. It resulted in Seville and no EPL so the donut isn’t likely to make the same mistake twice. If RK is appointed it’s just Irish rajists back slapping with their play thing

  7. Captain Beefheart killed Marxist dreams... Keane ate my courage... Formerly JO'N... Just say no to the clique. on

Got to agree with Margaret. Celtic aren’t going anywhere. The positive is that we get great potential access to the CL.

  8. Ryecatcher, disagree with that one.

No one will walk over PL, he may win some arguments, but he will loose more.

  9. tommytwiststommyturns on

Nakasammi – sorry, I don’t believe that for one minute. You really think that RK would agree to being No. 2 to a young manager like Lenny?!

Ryecatcher – surely Lennon’s reputation as a manager is higher in England than Keane’s? Don’t remember RK managing a team to a win over Barcelona!

Keane the player was legendary, but as a manager he’s done nothing of note!

TBJ – Hoopy birthday, ya auld deviant! :-)

  10. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Sydney, sorry for the delay in replying to you. I was out all day.

I sat beside you on the bus to the when its spring again we’ll sing again 2 1 in Amsterdam game.

You posted a few years back about your former neighbours in Westbourne, one of whom is a friend of mine. That post got me thinking it was you.

When Summa of Sammi posted your first name in one of his posts, I knew it was you.

I hope you and your family are keeping well. Its good your passion for our team is still as strong as it was when I first met you.

Gerry W is taxiing after coming back up the road. He is the only guy I know who has lost weight rather than put it on in that profession. His dad and one of his nephews sit behind me at Celtic Park.

Dushanbe Billy Bhoy who occasionally posts on here, is also a an ex uni CSC member. I was just a guest on the bus.

Sean Fallon gave an absolutely magnificent speech at the Uni CSC twentieth anniversary dinner. Many of us were close to tears with his from the heart speech. We were in the doldrums as fans but Sean’s speech filled us with pride.

Delaney’s, you would probably know Sydney if seen him. I hope you are having a good time seeing your family down the road as well as the cqn chaps.

Parkhead, great story about Big Mick remembering you. I last met him before a game at Celtic Park. He gave me a row for moving out of my parents’ house again. He told me it broke my mum’s heart. Lol

He passed away, sadly, in 1995 with the purvey after his funeral held at Celtic Park. He is buried in St Peter’s cemetry on London Road.

A great loss to his family, the church, his parishioners and Celtic.

  11. T4, but Lenny beat Barca with a Scottish team, that demeans the achievement in England, rather than heightens it.

So Keane probably has a higher reputation than NFL, mad but probably true.

  12. Justafan

He was no miracle worker at Watford. 33% win rate and 14th and 18th…

Cardiff he would have gone down with them. He is ok but seems to have the scots vote on here and therefore gets slack where keane doesn’t by the sAme mob. That was my point.

Not a bad manager. Not an enlightened choice.

And to prove I’d be pragmatic he lives round the corner from me and I’ve chatted with him a few times at mass.

  13. Doc

All I can say the original source was someone very close to this matter. Absolutely no SMSM involvement!!

Like us all on here we hear so many rumours and it might not be the reason Neil walked.

I just found the speed of his departure after Johan quitting rather strange. Considering the disgraceful and racist treatment he has experienced over the years why quit now.

Neil’s a strong character and not one of us would have been surprised had he moved on after any one of these shameful incidents

As I mentioned it might just another rumour to add to the list and I did use words like’may’ and ‘might’ :-)

Thanks and the girls in my cellar said hi ;)

  15. be…

The Watford fans think he was and I’d guess they were in a better position than you or I to judge lol. As we well know its your own supporters who are the harshest judges!

Don’t understand the Irish or Scottish angst…just get the best man from wherever.

  16. Nakasammi, not questioning your integrity, just seems far fetched, as T4 said.

All information adds to the debate mate.

Why do people persist with the notion that Celtic are trying to take away the club’s Irish heritage? It is just piffle. O’Neill, Lennon, Keane, Desmond, GAA links, music at CP, merchandise etc.

    …………………………

Thanks for the reassurance. My resolve was beginning to waver the other day during the Saltire v Tricoloour debate. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a 100% standup Irish Republican sorta fhella and while I like to see Celtic fans express themselves by waving flags which they identify with (Saltire, Star of David, Palestinian, Welsh Dragon et al) I do love to see the Irish Tricolour predominate as I think it is the flag which most peopke in the world identify us with.

  18. Justafan

Agreed. Best man got the job indeed.

Fancied a bit of continental but nobody consulted me !!

  19. I completely buy into the Peter Lawell strategy of buy imports low develop and then sell high, it works for me but the core of Celtic should be built from the development squads I want wave after wave of young Celtic fans growing into the team supported buy a few players bought to support underdeveloped areas and maintain a powerful squad and first team.

I think the Celtic team for next year as it stands is strong enough to get into the Champions League barring any departures or imports.

    Hail Hail.
