The curious significant of 1 June

1642

There’s something I’ve never been able to figure out for the last nine years.  When Gordon Strachan was announced as Celtic manager, on 1st June 2014, he apologised to the media for bumping their calls the previous week, as he was due to takeover on that date, and the announcement was embargoed until then.

No idea why the news was embargoed, but it was.  Tomorrow’s the 1st June.  If the same rules hold true now as when Gordon Strachan was appointed, there was little chance of an appointment in late May.

If you’re not going to the CQN 10-in-a-row Charity Golf day on 4 July the Sean’s Trust Charity Dinner is on the same night at the Fullarton Suits, Glasgow.  Sean’s Trust is run by the late St John Doyle’s partner, Linda.  If you’d like to attend let Lennybhoy know, lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

    Timbhoy in Spain.

I’m inland up in the Murcia region.

Are the Spanish betting sites poor?

Will have to do a bit of research.

    Thanks for your information.

    Hail Hail.

Not too far from me then.

Thing about any .es betting sites is they have to report any winnings to the Spanish government & they are treated as income & fully taxable as such & they don´t take losing bets into consideration. It´s not just the winnings that are taxable,it´s the total returns.

EG.you put 10k on Frankel at 1/10 to win a grand.

    11k return right ?

But it´s ALL taxed here at about 20% which is 2200 quid so your return is 8800 pounds.

    Good eh ? The Spanish haven´t a clue .

I use betfair myself most of the time.

If you need any help you can get my email address from Paul.

The last time I put it on here I got some nasty & threatening emails from some stickies believe it or not. They were soon told in no uncertain terms where to go ha ha.

    Thanks again & Hail Hail.

Neil Francis’s CV never qualified him for the celtic job (IMHO) but he done not a bad job.

Big Wavy, what makes you think Roy will be able to manage through a Champions League campaign?

What evidence is there of Roy working with a tight budget and selling players to get something to spend?

I’m hoping all of this previous evidence was only down to his previous two clubs having the wrong structure and not Roy himself.

  5. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

Since when did it become an absolute no-no to question decisions made by the club?

Being a Celtic supporter doesn’t give any of us the right to criticise or question when we feel it necessary to do so.

Rather it bestows upon us an obligation to do so.

I think that those in favour of the appointment are criticising those of us who may not be. And using it as a means to undermine our passion for Celtic is a cheap shot.

I don’t think Roy Keane is the best candidate,so shouldn’t be the choice. I also don’t think a 37% holding gives anyone the right to be kingmaker.

Doesn’t make me less of a Celtic fan than anyone who disagrees with me.

  6. What type of managerial cv did Neil have before he got the job?

The biggest opponent that Roy Keane or, whoever the Celtic manager will be is, the culture-change within the Celtic environment.

That change is…the ‘rebels’ in the Jungle have gone, only to be replaced by ‘snobs’ in seats.

All of the above – In My Humble Opinion of course.

  7. mullet and co 2

How did we know Neil would ?

How would we know anybody could until they’ve done it ? All of this is a risk but the point I’d make is that he will exist inside a structure that is meant to be set up for success and which is different from previous incarnations.

Scouting, player development, etc will be part of the supporting act.

As for the profile issue I wholeheartedly agree. That Desmond fella is no mug and as we move further down the bargain bucket basement as our neighbours get richer it makes a lot of sense in player attraction and club profile to have a RK in place rather than a Jackie Mac.

    Let’s wait and see.

  8. What is curious is the deafening silence down Edmonson way.

That’s a first in the last 2/3 years.

The curious incident of the dead in the night

  9. TET –

    100% agree.

Some of the comments against Roy Keane are quite bizarre.

I am also amazed that some posters purporting to be Celtic supporters have slaughtered him for disrupting Ireland’s World Cup preparations. Unbelievable.

    a) When did football supporters whose club is in the process of recruiting a new manager ever stop to think of the welfare of his present employers? A great big smokescreen.

    B) And even if they did, what manager, on being head-hunted by a top club for a prestigious job, and having been given the present employer’s permission to speak to them, would turn his back on such an opportunity because he doesn’t want to disrupt their plans? An even bigger and more absurd smokescreen.

Listen, if you don’t like the guy, just say so. Don’t insult our intelligence.

  10. Bobby

That sounds very queensbury rules fella and cuts an awful lot of slack to ‘some’ posters who have been personal here. The guy hasn’t slipped on a celtic trackie and kicked a ball in earnest and has been damned not on results, performance or otherwise but because they don’t like the man.

We all have some reservations (myself included) and you could build a case against any new incumbent, including Henke but a respectful ‘let’s see and don’t take the man’ approach would be befitting a celtic supporter site imho.

  11. mullet and co 2 on

If I was a major shareholder I would be asking serious questions about this appointment and what the strategy is.

If the name at the top of the cv was anything other than Roy Keane we wouldn’t even consider this.

Sunderland was passable but the story of how he got there was eh interesting. Check the amount he spent and the volume. Ipswich was a complete and utter disaster. They almost got relegated from the second tier.

It will be interesting how this is spun at the press conference. You could hardly stand up and say we have got an excellent manager with an excellent track record.

  12. Morning all

BMCUWP I agree with your post of 9.39. I thought the purpose of blogs such as this or fanzines such as NTV is to discuss what is happening at Celtic – not just say everything is great all the time a la the Celtic View c1987 or the entire Scottish Traditional Media with regard to Rangers until the beginning of February 2011.

Roy Keane has not been announced as Celtic’s manager. He may never be announced as such. Whether he does or dies not manager I am entitled to doubt the wisdom of appointing him on the basis of his record as a manager to date, to admit that whilst he was an effective player he was not, often, one I enjoyed watching and his persona on ‘panels’ suggest that he is not a particularly affable bloke. Two of these traits are of course irrelevant but they have shaped how I think of Roy Keane.

He is an intriguing individual though and he may thrive at Celtic. If he comes I would wish him personal success. As things stand though I am still entitled to hope that he does not become our manager

    BIG WAVY

    Put like that,I totally agree.

FWIW,I supported Neil from Day One,even after shocking results. Although I still criticised him occasionally! Difference is,he was in place immediately. Roy isn’t.

No matter, our new manager will get the support of the vast majority of us,whoever he is.

  14. mullet and co 2 on

Gold Coast Tom, I think big wavy is saying, if you don’t like the guy then don’t say so.

To be clear, I do like Roy Keane (assault on a fellow professional excepted).

What is it about Roy Keane that makes you think he would be good for the job?

So far all I have read is that he would scare McCoist, the press would be fears and he would take no prisoners. Accept all of those. However, what is there to suggest him being good with subs when you are 1 nil down and staring at going out of Europe? What is there to suggest brining in the right signing within budget just when the club needs a lift? Those are the kind of things I expect a manager to do not giving McCoist a right hander or serving revenge cold to the no marks in the media.

  15. mullet and co 2

Would you say the same of Malky McKay – slightly less win ratio as Roy, promoted with a war chest, punted and less tenure in EPL, wasted signings ?

I see very little in his candidature that separates him from RK but lauded by many here (which is fair enough)

  16. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

Ah,Celtic-related posts and amicable disagreements. It will never catch on!

  17. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Even the hapless Superdupercoisty would win the SPL with Celtic; the new manager has to deliver in Europe, which means bein’ able to negociate his way through the ole qualifyin’ rounds.

  18. My tuppence wurth!

Roy Keane as a player was a leader with a fierce determination to win. He was managed by two of the greatest football managers in British football and Swalex :-).

He has a chequered managerial record but so did Gordon Strachan and we didn’t do too shabbily under him IMHO. If appointed give him the support and good will that we should offer any new member of the playing or coaching staff at Celtic. He will want to be successful and if he is we will benefit from that.

    We are all Celtic.

  19. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Roy Keane’s assets as incomin’ Celtic manager

    1/ He’s Irish

    2/ He’s from Ireland

3/ He speaks with an Irish accent

This focus on the innate qualities of his Irishness seems a bit Sevconian.

KEVJ takes the easy option of choices with about as much chance of landing the job as I do.

    Wise man!

  22. mullet and co 2 on

Malky seems destined for serial promotion and relegation in England. No thanks. No European experience. He would only be a candidate because he played for Celtic.

  23. My understanding is that Ricky Sbragia was a Rangers supporter as a boy. Then again so was John Robertson and it didn’t matter a jot to MON. And so was our greatest ever manager.

  24. BMCUW @0939

    I agree.

Those of us who have reservations about the probable imminent arrival of RK have every right to express those sentiments on here.

It DOES NOT make us any less ‘Celtic minded’ than those who are happy to welcome RK to the club.

Whoever gets the gig will receive my FULL support.

    HH!!

  25. My favorite all-time Celtic player was highlander and for me, his best quality was that…

    1. He could get effffed in on the pitch

    2. He could tackle – without fouling – that’s important

    3. His disciplined structures stood him in good stead

    4. He could distance himself from this daft Celtic-minded p#sh and, see a spade as a spade – thats why he was sought by Wim who later said that -“….without Murdo winning the double would not have happened.”

  26. As far as I’m concerned the only true Celtic fans are those wanting Pope Francis as manager.

    Everyone else is a hun.

  27. Just thinking back to my own views prior to previous managerial appointments at Celtic :

I thought Kenny and John would be the Dream Team. I was wrong.

I thought Martin didn’t have enough experience at the top level to turn us around. I was wrong.

I thought Gordon wouldn’t “get Celtic”. I was wrong.

I thought Tony was an experienced, strong character who could not possibly fail. I was wrong (though to be fair – he was cheated by the huns and SFA). But I was still wrong.

I thought Neil didn’t have the temperament to handle the job. By God – I was certainly wrong.

So I have learned to be a little more considerate when a new managerial appointment comes along at Celtic.

BTW – if anyone wan’t tips on the nags or the lottery numbers, just let me know…

  28. mullet and co 2 on

Tim tanium, Strachan had Coventry in the top tier for 2 or 3 seasons before getting relegated the sacked. During that time he reached an FA cup quarter final.

He had Southampton in an FA cup final and 11th and 8th placed finishes in the top tier.

The only aspect that is chequered is the relegation. I questioned his appointment at the time but his record compares well to Kean.

  29. I thought I made it clear in my post that while people are entitled to be against a prospective managerial appointment, my target was those with “bizarre” reasons for not wanting him. Hence why I said, “If you don’t like him just say so” rather than convoluted excuses for not liking him.

  30. !!Bada Bing!! on

I posted last night ,Ricky Sbragia and Scotland U19s use the hotel where Mrs Bada works as Director of Sales. He told her a few weeks ago he was retiring.Could well be the case that RK is wanting him back as Chief Scout,as he was at Sunderland.

    KEVJ

Not sure he was correct in saying that.

‘The double’ is The League and The Scottish Cup. Not the league cup.

    Nitpicking maybe…
