The cycle of sacking managers

654

We spoke about Stale Solbakken here as an option during one of our recent management vacancies.  At the time he was manager of Copenhagen, who were playing monopoly with the Danish game and had become the first regular Champions League competitor from that country.  Yesterday he was sacked as manager of Wolves, who are 18th in the second tier of English football.

Mick McCarthy led Wolves to promotion into the FA Premier League in 2009 but was sacked in February after slipping into a relegation place.  The club were relegated and Solbakken was appointed in July.  Solbakken, still only 44, won five leagues in six seasons at Copenhagen and competed well with a tiny budget in the Champions League.  He is a good manager but his failure at Wolves presents more evidence that the fabled guru football manager doesn’t exist.

Managers are cogs in a management system which involves players, scouts, technical experts, coaches, youth development staff and administrators.  If a club gets all the other components right, as Copenhagen unquestionably did, the guy with ultimate control over team matters will appear to over-perform.   Conversely, if you have a genuinely talented manager but he doesn’t work with a crucial part of the football structure, progress will stall.  Martin O’Neill taught us more about football tactics in his first season than we had learned in the previous 20 years, but he was not known to sign players he hadn’t identified when playing against his teams.

Wolves chance of recruiting a manager as good as Mick McCarthy is slight.  They could do worse than look at how Celtic stemmed the flow of failure by taking a guy who was already working with the scouts, coaches, technical experts, youth development staff and administrators.  Don’t look for a guru, get the system right and find someone who will work within it.

  1. Afternoon all

Just reread the Celtic Fc official Facebook Review of 2012 and in particular the closing sentence of the April 2012 entry. Aside from wondering whether I have any sort of life – as I have also read the comments of somebody called Andrew Dickson on said entry/ I wonder quite why anybody on either side of the factual divide is getting aereated about this. Celtic have not played Rangers Oldco , Newco Rangers, the Rangers, Sevco 5088 or any clubs approved of (or in fact not) by the ECA, UEFA or SMERSH since April 29 2012. This is not mischief making or disrespect or anything else. It is a fact. Now I’ll away and do something life enhancing like change my bed clothes or an ironing in a bid to improve myself.

  2. If true about Paolo Di Canio & St Pauli, that is a disastrous match. Cannot see Di Canio’s extreme right wing views and antics going down well with St Pauli. Anti Fascism being the cornerstone of their principles.

Hail Hail St Pauli , don’t do it!!!

  3. Gene, Puerto Del Carmen is a fairly stretched out resort. At one extreme end you have the resort of Matagorda, then walking towards the main resort is a little area known as Los Poscillios, then on to the New Town and eventually up to the Old Town & Harbour Area. So it depends on where you want to base yourself. I usually stay in the San Antonio Hotel but that is just beyond Los Poscillios and at outer end of The New Town. Its a long walk from there to the Harbour Area which is probably the nicest part of the resort. If you are energetic there is a smashing cliff top walk from The Old Town to Puerto Calera, its about 50 minutes but there are a lot of steps to go up at the begining. You would need to be some way fit but if you are try the walk, its worth it.

Aw Naw – still room for plenty of football debate on here!

The current model we’re working to appears to be bearing fruit, going by the progress in Europe over the last two seasons and you have to look as far back to Davie Hay for such effective scouting.

I don’t prescribe to either the full-blown European model, where the managers are almost inter-changable or the typical British model, where the manager’s word is gospel.

The Director of Football role, so common in Europe has not proved to be particularly effective in British football either.

I think the foundations of our current success lie somewhere in between, where we have the right people operating within a working solution and we have a manager that everyone respects.

Previously, during their 3iar, many of us felt that PL was playing Football Manager with our club and I remember being very critical of the board.

For example, the amount of player trading was quite ridiculous. You could have been forgiven for thinking that somebody at the club was on a cut of player deals in & out of CP!

Our biggest problem is still being stuck in our current environment. I’m pig-sick of it and I’m sure there’s plenty more feel the same.
