The day has come

403

Celtic’s primary job tonight is to defend properly, something we have singularly failed to do this season to anything like the levels achieved last term.  This is not solely to do with the defence, and has nothing to do with the goalkeeper (who missed the Legia debacle), but is a function of the entire team.

Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen have the primary job of protecting the back four but most importantly, whoever plays wide midfield, has to partner with the corresponding full back.  The full back positions have not been stable recently.  Emilio looked to be back to his best at the weekend, but his form since returning from the World Cup has been erratic.  We’ve had Efe Ambrose, Adam Matthews and Mikael Lustig at right back, leaving Callum McGregor little chance to establish a working relationship.

We have the speed, and Salzburg have the defensive record, to suggest we can score on the break, but focus should be on ensuring this is not an open, fluid, game of football.

The day has come

This is a unique time in our history and a CQN’er and academic has prepared a survey to record who we are, where we came from, our views and how closely our objectives align with the Club.  You will be asked about the Referendum, faith, education, your heritage, the Offensive Behaviour Act and more, but you’ll be finished in around 5 minutes.

The objective is to identify why you support Celtic and whether these reasons are being recognised and served.  You don’t sign up for anything, but the survey will record only your first visit.  You’ll find it here.

I’ve never waved a blue and white – nor red, white and blue – flag in my life.  Nationalism holds nothing for me, so I’ve found the political question of our time to be a difficult, technical, assessment, principally about jobs – Scotland’s real need.

This time tomorrow we will know the verdict and whether it’s Yes or No, we will come together behind green and white flags once more.  In the event the polls are accurate, and No wins an unconvincing victory, use your voice in as many places you can, and let the chastened UK powers now that if they have any intention of Nation Building, they must use their influence to stop the exclusion of Scottish clubs from the dominant England-and-Wales football market.

Many people in Scotland feel culturally and economically excluded by this England-and-Wales legally permissible cartel.  It suits the regions of England, it suits Wales, but it costs jobs and income in Scotland, is unjust and must end.

Allowing Scottish clubs to enter this market would bring tens of millions of £s into the east end of Glasgow every year.  It would also establish emotional and cultural ties among groups in society who feel disenfranchised, and who the Westminster parties seem to have lost.  In political terms, reaching out to football is a no-brainer.

Nation building is part art, part science, but it doesn’t work if you exclude people on what they hold dear.

I believe we have turned the corner. Obviously we need the cleansing of the SFA offices but I’m confident there will be a few revelations soon which will make the positions of those at the very top untenable

Going fishing tomorrow It is a democratic vote and if it goes against my side, then I just have to accept it and move on. Good luck to everyone.

Must have been a difficult decision. They fear the cost of living going up but believe that the future is for the young. Hail Hail. YES Scotland. Now is the time.

  8. Salmond votes ‘No’

    18-09-14

ALEX Salmond has voted ‘No’ to Scottish independence.

The SNP leader cast his ballot this morning near his constituency home and then emerged from the polling station and gave a ‘thumbs up’ to the media.

When asked how he voted, Mr Salmond said: “I voted ‘no’ actually. Last minute change of heart, I suppose.

“The idea of independence is quite exciting, but at some point over the last couple of days I just thought, ‘it seems like a lot of bother’.”

He added: “I’m also a wee bit worried about my pension.”

Deary deary me,a little stretch of the truth in my opinion. The reason you are annoyed by Celtic fans is that we are not all blindly accepting that you are 100% right and we are all wrong. You are not disenfranchised, you have chosen to walk away in a big huff and you’ve taken your ball with you because the big bad boys would not let you win.

Fella sounds like you need a rest from CQN I can understand in some way as there has been many harsh words said against the No voters on this site something I wouldnt have expected from fellow fans. However, maybe that was naive as I know I have been at many Celtic games and have had different opinions to fellow fans at the game.I suggest you take a break until you feel refreshed and feel like coming on to the site.As you know I dont share your views on all things Celtic but I do believe you are entitled to your views and I am sorry that you have not been treated as you would have hoped.H.H.

    ‘corkcelt,

I think the higher turnout is what swung the poll statistics from being an easy no victory to a tight no victory.

Many reasons but it is thought that the disengaged were from the poorer end of society and they see this as an opportunity for change’

    ####

Yes those ‘from the poorer end of society’ have been conned into believing that an independent Scotland would be a left wing country and that’s why they have engaged with the political process.

Now, we both know that any notion that an independent Scotland would be a left wing country is delusional nonsense.

But that doesn’t matter, if you can con enough people into believing it you might, just might get a majority.

And that’s all that matters. It doesn’t matter that you’ve lied. It doesn’t matter that people’s aspirations will be dashed. None of that matters. What matters is that Scotland will be independent. That’s the only thing that matters. An independent Scotland. Damn the consequences. Independence is the only thing that matters. That’s nationalism.

You should answer the Nazi jibes and the people who made them. I did and will call out anyone who disgraces our side of the debate; I am asking the decent Yes voters to do the same with their side. Do not call the man out because of where it is imagined he lives, which was the point I was making re the ernie jibes.

    monteblanco

Thank you. The boy voting Yes has similar reasons that you expressed. I wish there were more on your side willing to call out the excesses of the “I can’t understand Tims voting No- they must be Orangemen!” type posts.

    MWD

I got no facts wrong. I said it was hypocritical to call ernie out on his residential deficiencies to be Scottish and praising Andy Murray who shares them. If you can establish, and you have not done so online yet, that ernie has lied about his residence, then you can call him out as a liar. But he is still as entitled to comment on the Independence issue as kitalba, Snake Plissken, Taurangabhoy, PJBhoyNYC, GerryBhoy, and a host of other ex-pats and Irishmen who have taken positions on “Our” referendum. Can you say with any honesty that you have called for them to butt out as much as you have asked ernie to.

    kitalba

I don’t know if Murray has a vote but he has tweeted, as he is entitled, support for the Yes campaign. I suspect he can afford more than one house- maybe he is still registered to vote here. I was not decrying his ability to vote or comment; I was trying to point out hypocrisy over who we might wish to censor or harass.

    Geordie M

That’s not for me to judge? But, rather than leaving it hanging, can you articulate why the reaction is different to the voting intentions of Andy Murray and ernie lynch

  23. Neg Anon

The simple stat that 12% of the Scottish police force self-declares as RC, whilst the population at large self-declares at 16% is interesting and has face validity.

But, it is not proof of institutional discrimination against applicants.

The additional information that other posters requested is highly valid and is, in fact, necessary, before any such charge is being considered.

You need to consider the alternative options:-

1)The RC population may be discriminating against the police.

If less than 12% of RC’s apply to join the police but as much as 12% are accepted into their ranks then you have a hypothesis to investigate via further research. That hypothesis would be that RC’s mistrust their chances of being selected by the police and do not bother to apply but are wrong to think that way. Or there is a historical distrust of the polis from the RC community leading to them being unwilling to even apply to the organisation. Both of these hypotheses would need to be further tested.

    2) RC’s are under-declaring their religion

There may be more than 16% of the polis who are actually RC or loosely RC, but a significant proportion of them either are wary of declaring so for fear of being discriminated against, or because they are thrawn about the civil liberties issues involved in self-declaring such information. Again, both of these hypotheses would need to be further tested.

    3) All religions are under-represented in the police force

If the figures for self declared Protestants, self declared Muslims and self declared Jews are not equally considered, then no case can be advanced for a discriminatory process. It may be that all religions contain a proportion of people who are wary about their affiliation being known to management. Or all religious people in the police force may have strong civil liberty issues about revealing sensitive information. Again, further research is necessary.

    4) The Polis discriminates against RCs (or any other religious affiliation)

For this to be proven, you would need to determine whether there were more or less than 12% of RCs applying to join the polis. You would need to know whether among those that chose not to declare a religious affiliation, there were fewer than 4% who were secret RC worshippers, and you would need to know that some other religious group, or those with no religious preference, were being selected for posts in numbers disproportionate to the application percentages. Further research would be required.

So those who pointed these issues out to you were not, necessarily, disputing that there was no discrimination in the polis. They were just pointing out that your figures alone do not nail the case. They are interesting but not conclusive at all.

The most common outcome from social science research is that more research is necessary- it very rarely nails “truths”.

    The numbers never lie.

Unfortunately, the words surrounding the numbers can be filled with mistruths, evasions and omissions.

  24. Kilbowie Kelt will vote YES on

I had better say it now when I don’t know the result.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the buzz of the build up to decision day. Rarely have I heard such passion in the pubs & on the streets. Most of it has been argued passionately but without any excess of rancour.

Whatever way the numbers stack up I hope that the result will get the same reaction.

We have all had our say.
