The difficult January transfer window

372

The script was written. Dedryck Boyata was destined to open the scoring against Hamilton Accies yesterday.  The only surprise was that this wasn’t followed by ‘a Dedryck moment’, as he mis-controlled for an equaliser.  Brendan now has some big decisions to make about the player, but with Jozo Simunovic and Jack Hendry injured, we are down to only two fit central defenders heading into the games against Suduva and Newco, the latter after the transfer window closes (Marvin Compper isn’t even in the debate).

We continually hear that January is a difficult time to sign players.  That being the case, we might get as much money for Dedryck then as now.  I would also be concerned about signing a player a day or two before throwing him into an atmospheric (cough) capacity game.  Especially if he is young.

Brendan has made his thoughts known on our defending this season, but yesterday’s footage from Fir Park will give him some ideas for this Sunday’s game.  With so much in play, you feel there is a pivotal week ahead.

The one that springs to mind is the ten man win at Ipox , their first goal.

That is “it” mate, once . How has that one mistake taken root so much, I can still see “it”. Our friends in the media do that, but they wield the weapon. But it’s the Celtic support thatis the weapon.

    Here’s another “the squiggler”.

Celtic supporters are a double edged sword.

  2. The reason Boyata is still there, and the Club losing around £9 mil, is down to lack of replacement being brought in, gross mismanagement.Boyata and his agent blanked requests to do a new deal, which tells you he wanted out.

  3. We’ll get hee haw for him in January. We don’t need him for this week.

Get him sold if he’s not signing a new deal and get a defender (or two) in.

  4. Neganon

If the board kill off Res 12 at the forthcoming AGM, then we will have confirmation that they do not want to pursue all the issues surrounding RFC’s liquidation, including the cheated titles, new club etc etc. THEY must be held to account, along with the SFA and others.

What, in your view, would be the best way to achieve this?

  5. Ger57 the only way is to change the regime at Celtic and the only way they will is if we starve them out.

That won’t happen though and so we need to make our individual choices.

  6. Dedryk Boyata haters read it and weep

BRENDAN RODGERS rates Dedryck Boyata in the “£10million to £15million” class – and wants the defender to remain at Celtic.

The Belgian international yesterday made his first appearance for the Hoops in just over three months – and scored the winner against Hamilton Accies at Parkhead.

Boyata, 27, has stirred the emotions of the champions’ followers with his recent no-shows in the vital European ties against AEK Athens and FK Suduva.

He has 10 months left on his contract and will be able to talk to interested clubs in January.

If the centre-back, who was the subject of a failed £9million bid from Fulham before the Premier League deadline on August 9, does not leave Parkhead by the close of the European transfer window on Friday evening, the club risk seeing him walk for free next summer.

Rodgers, though, hopes there is still a future for him at Celtic. Looking at his matchwinning performance against Accies, the Irishman said: “He cruised the game because he is a top-class player.

“We are not a squad which can do without a player of that quality. He made his commitment to the team and was there for his team-mates.

“He was first-class and it was ironic he got the goal. Everything he did was superb and it was great to have him back in there.”

Asked if he believed the Belgian World Cup centre-back would still be at the club in five days’ time, Rodgers replied: “I’m not thinking anything other than that.

“He’s in his last year and you never know how the game works.

“But, like I said to him, however long you are here – whether it’s a week or the rest of the season – your best place is on the training field and out on the pitch on a matchday.

“So, we want him there. He’s been a big part of what we have done for the last couple of years.

“I respect that a football career is short and you have to maximise your playing time.

“We will see what happens this week, but I’m not planning for anything other than Dedryck being here.

“He’s been pivotal to a lot of our really good performances since he came into the team 18-odd months ago.

    “He’s a £10million or £15 million-rated World Cup centre-half playing for us.

“That makes a difference to a squad like ourselves. You see him in there, he calms everything down.

“He defends very well. He’s quick on the turn and he serves the ball nice and quickly.

“It was a really good performance by him and that gives the stability to the rest of the team.”

I was with Morrissey on the day of the 2013 AGM. We both felt then that the board had something to hide re the goings on. Remember, we didn’t have all the info that we have now, but it felt strange that our board would be reluctant to pursue the bad guys in support of our own wronged shareholders.

I reckon those wronged shareholders would have a case against the SFA in a civil court. Maybe even our board too.

My feeling is, as you say the Celtic Board seemed to be content for the most part, to let the shareholder/supporters to run with it.

  10. Res 12 was dead the minute it was taken away from discussion at original AGM. This told you all you needed to know about Celtic. They wanted it kicked into long grass. Strung Res 12 boys along from the start. No intention of doing anything. Afewt 6 years still not one thing done about New club getting into league or into Europe when they don’t quaify for either. No clainm to get titles stripped . No stating it is a new club. Only positive thing to happen in 6 years was getting BR in and giving him a little money to improve team…this because we lost semi-final to Ibrox team and emptied seats

  11. BCW

I admit he has steadied up recently. Infact I was impressed with his performances for Belgium in the World Cup. Even yesterday on a couple of occasions he did really well in tricky situations, but my heart was still my mouth. I think he will still be a Celtic player next week. I also think Brendan rates him and was hoping he would sign on for an extension of his contract. The transfer window has turned into an absolute shambles after a great start (Eddy). Who do I think is the main culprit in this !Lawwel!

  12. BSR- I think the best we can do from the Boyata situation, is try and get him on a new deal, with a buy out clause and he gets a % of the fee, at least that way we keep Boyata and give us a bit of time to get 2 new CBs in( Jozo and Compper can go anytime), and we get decent money for him next summer.

  13. NEGANON,

Difficult to type this with my fingers in my ears.

Your last post to me more uninformed “Guff”.

Thank you for the information about Wilson, that passed me by and explains a lot.

Do you recall 3 years ago or so?, Sevco held their AGM, poss EGM and banned all the press, well Wilson was one of two BBC journalists who were still able to attend, in their capacity as Sevco shareholders!!!!

That’s what we are dealing with.

    Turkeybhoy.

Sometimes you have to open your mind, even just a little, just because you don’t like some posts, it doesn’t mean they aren’t true. The fact that Rodgers, Brown and Boyatta held a meeting, tells you that there was issues in the dressing room. Boyatta wasn’t the only issue either, fingers crossed the meeting has cleared the air and we move on as a club.

    Hail Hail to all.

He will get none from me.

    Harsh,but them’s the breaks.

  17. I hate discussing Celtic players on here in a negative fashion as half the posters on here aren’t even Celtic supporters and they jump on anything to feed their agenda and then the real fans respond and rightly so.

Having said that BSR in his post mentioned Tom Rogic . He has struggled this year, perhaps a World Cup hangover. He is incredibly gifted and joyous to watch at times. I’ve always felt that he’s struggled against CL opposition, he’s not alone, but hoped at EL level he would shine as he has many times in the SPL.

It’s the business end of the park and perhaps explains why Brendan seems more keen on looking for a no.10 than a centre half.

Anyway Tom is most certainly earned the right to be called a hunskelper , hopefully he can unpick a packed Sudova defence on Thursday first.

  18. BADA BING,

The reason Boyata is still with us is that Brendan wants him.If PL could have got £ 9 million from Fulham, and given Brendan £3 million for a replacement,Memisevic,eg,he would have been clicking his heels.Even now,I have no idea what Brendan hopes will happen with Boyata. My belief is that Brendan thought, after talking to the player, that Boyata would stay.I dont believe for one minute we had a list of alternatives drawn up.If we did,why all the scrabbling about now?

  19. TB- any business re CBs should have been done weeks ago, we are now firefighting to salvage some worth in Boyata, a real lack of forward planning IMO

  20. JIMMYNOTPAUL,

I have to open my mind?.Mostly, all I read on here are closed minds.Everything is PLs fault. No thought put into it.If,in my case,I try to approach it with an open mind, the blog idiot Neganon, cant wait to label me a PL,Board lover. What issues in the dressing room? They could only have been about Boyata not getting his transfer. That,as we all know,is down to Brendan.Do you honestly think that PL would not have bitten the hand off Fulham for 9 million?Really? The money grabbing, bean counting villain.

There has been a lot going on,and there are many to blame.Blame being a harsh word.Yes ,I agree, open minds should be used, but sadly,it wont happen.

    TURKEYBHOY

I disagree. I think that PL and BR sat down at the end of the season and reviewed the season, and planned ahead.

That included a budget and areas which needed strengthening, and particular targets. It always does,no matter the club or manager.

Do you think that our manager has been backed this summer? There you go,Pete, have £40m CL money for the second year, and I’ll try to get a hat-trick on peanuts.

    Bloody shameful.

  22. Bada @ 1.33

You’re thinking about it – too complex for me, no idea how it all works.

I think I said to you a while back the hopeful plan to keep Dedryk Boyata was flawed, whether we rate him or not, more importantly Brendan Rodgers does with the caveat that there had to be a lined up replacement , there wasn’t a replacement, so Brendan wouldn’t sell.

Normally our bomb scare, liability, big coward ,centre backs from the sieve don’t’ attract speculation never mind bids of £10M to £15M. Rodgers is part of the window poker game and he’s waiting just like us to see what happens. The will he ,won’t he play stuff, was cat and mouse for MSM, and it worked a treat, climaxing in Brendan Rodgers telling Sevilla or whoever to get the cash out, having boosted the player and his value and importance to Celtic?

The worrying bit is why there was no CB lined up, never mind signed .

If we sell Boyata the board will get panned if we don’t sell Boyata guess what the board , will still get panned.

Henrick. If you question lawwell or paul67 his lapdogs attack. It’s as predictable as it is boring.

The real question before us now is whether this infinite patience nonsense was part of the ploy to keep us dangling and not coming to rather obvious answers.

I have to laugh when folk who have none of it laugh at what they do not have – patience.

I also get annoyed when folk like yourself who have done SFA but batter a keyboard to death until it melts in a pool of negativity, have a go at folk who actually get off their arses and try to make things happen.

Chairbhoy has pointed out the handicap Res12 has had to work under and in that vacuum folk will apply their own meaning.

You might be right about Celtic’s reluctance to engage but you are way off beam about Res 12 guys making that easy.

  27. BADA BING,

I totally agree with you on that, but,I get back to the point I have been making,Ad Nauseum, who is to blame for the lack of preparation?Like everyone else,I am loathe to slate Brendan for anything, but his recruitment of defenders in his time with us has been poor.I mentioned the other day,and was shot down by someone, totally uninformed, that counting loan payments for players,Brendan has had nearly £ 30 million to spend.Check the facts.Of this,we got Toure ,free,Gamboa,1 million,Hendry,1 million,Izzy,free,Commper,1 million.Ajer, already there, but switched.

When I say Brendan has a weak spot with signing defenders,I am a Board lover. The facts are there.Brendan brought in Congerton, who to me,has been an abject failure. With all the very decent CHs we are now being linked with,he came up with the boy from Aberdeen, who Brendan went along with.

Hopefully, its get sorted, but not before time.
