The difficult task of replacing Commons

447

Brendan Rodgers would have looked at Kris Commons age, position and recent injury record and assumed he’s not going to get much from him this season. He’d not be the first Celtic manager to come to that conclusion about Kris.

Kris has created more chances per minutes played than anyone in a Celtic shirt over the last decade, and that includes the golden era of Nakamura, Maloney and McGeady, which brought us into the Champions League knock out stages for the first time.

He didn’t fit Ronny’s system and might not fit Brendan’s, but to win leagues, cups and qualify for Europe, you need someone who can be relied upon to open obstinate defences, and we’ve struggled to find a better tool for this job than Kris Commons.

He’s in the final year of his final Celtic contract, but if he goes, I hope it’s not before 31 August.

I’ve attempted a reply on JJ. Seems it has been depth charged again.

    Heyho.

Rangers fans-the real ones – need to get their club back, under control of someone they can trust, and someone who isn’t gonna simply rip them off.

In doing so,they consign their club to oblivion for a good few years, but the size of their support, and the income that produces, will see them near the top again.

Hopefully not too near,I’m not Santa Claus.

    But..

I know how I would feel if this was happening to Celtic. I know how a lot of my mates back home feel about it happening to “Rangers”.

No more ripping off the punters, and a bit of honest reporting from the MSM would go a long way.

  2. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

As you and I have discussed before, they have had real chances – chances that few other football fans have been offered – to take control of their own destiny. The fact that they haven’t is bewildering and pretty hilarious. They just love a good spiv.

  3. !!Bada Bing!! on

If Johansen only had a year left, that’s decent money, now that is a guy who played when he felt like it……seen his pal van Dijk go on to 40k a week, and he started digging his escape tunnel.

  4. Real Rangers Fans:))))

Bobby, yer having a laugh mate, there’s 500 million of them worldwide:))

They sold by and watched there club die the death of a thousand cuts because????? because???? because they’re so used to someone else wiping their arses that’s why…

They love their victim role and are always just about to get organised against the Unseen Fenian Hand that has took over their country and their kultcha:))

Oh Real Rangers Fans where are you????

Their club is in the hands of real Rangers fans Dave King and Paul Murray it don’t come any realer than that!

I almost feel sorry for them….not…

    Ok.

Busy day. Flight to Lisbon nearly on time despite beast efforts of striking French Air Traffic Controllers. Nice G+T on the plane to top up the pint of Stella from Wetherspoons Edinburgh Airport at 4.30am!!! Couldn’t check in at Midday, so aff oot for a few local brews and a quick reccy of Lisbon. Back at hotel now, showered after melting in 30c, and feeling good.

Two nights here. Going with Mrs H to Stadio Naçional tomorrow (she’s English but understands) so looking forward to that. Then we are off to Ponta Delgado in the Azores. A week there, then a week on Pico Island, then 3 nights in Terceira, before returning to Lisbon for 3 nights, and then back home.

I’ve asked before but does anyone have any info on The Azores? Would appreciate any tips and/or advice or recommendations.

Miss H bought me a 40th anniversary hoops for the visit to the Stadio Naçional – Wee Star, buzzin.

    Hail Hail

The phrase ‘real Rangers fans’ has the same sentiment as ‘real KKK members’ to me.What are these real fans doing backing an odious,hate-conduit that is the thems in whatever guise?Being a fan of such an organisation is a mistake from the get-go.By choosing thems as your team you are, wittingly or unwittingly, endorsing what they stand for.IMO real Rangers fans ARE the Billy Boys and No Surrender mob.

  7. Be glad to get any fee for Stefan Johannsen, a player that clearly lost his way at Celtic largely because he didn’t have a lot of football to start with, but made best use of his great engine.

Did Stefan bang his head at Celtic? – he unlike Efe Ambrose or Kris Commons should command a substantial transfer fee whilst not being on many Celtic fan favourites lists, after a player of the year award.

There must be some amount of moles at Lennoxtown where we know so much detail about Kris Commons – or is it just the internet made up stuff, like the Efe to Leverkusen story?

  8. mike in toronto on

My thoughts on SJ leaving …. great engine, and played a good pressing game when he was in the mood …. but that only works well if everyone is doing it (and often, he (and sometimes LG) were the only two playing the pressing game that I expected under RD. Except for his work rate, he didn’t bring as much to the team as I had expected he would ….

having said that, 1.1 million seems low for a Norwegian international midfielder.

But we have too many of the same type of player, so there needs to be a clear out …. if we get money for SJ, then so be it….

    Bobby M,

In the context that you use the term, there is no such thing as a RRM.

To greater or lesser degrees, they all support what that outfit stand and stood for.

They were reared in a climate of entitlement and being ” looked after”.

    They acknowledge that TATP.

How far back would one have to go to find a spiv free environment at Ibrox?

As for Celtic attempting to treat us like that ; for one thing they wouldn’t, but more so, how far would they stray off the straight and narrow before the SMSM would be screaming from the rooftops?

Perversely, it was the silent compliance of the media that facilitated Murray and his successors.

The spoon wasn’t long enough with which they chose to sup with the Devil.

G67- I think a player like Whelan/Britton is what we have lacked for a few years HH

Rumour on KDS is that its Mattieu Flamini

  12. Gary67

KDS were convinced that Moyes was our next manager, straight from his cousins mouth, another even said he overheard Moyes telling someone that he had signed a contract but was waiting till the end of the season before it was to be announced.

There is as much a chance that Flamini will sign as Pedro will pay £14 mill for Allen.

I wonder if we will spend anything this window :-)

Aff oot to find some tea. Back later.

  14. Flamini?

I’d rather have Xavi and/or Pirlo!

We just came back from a long weekend in Lisbon, very enjoyable. The Hotel Tivoli has an excellent rooftop bar for a teatime swally, canny stay too long as the music would burst ye!

The fan park will be interesting tomorrow night, down at the sea near the Praca do Commercio. Alfama a nice wee neighborhood with wee bars.

Take the funicular train up the hill, the Elevador da Gloria to Bairro Alto, lots of wee pubs with I kid you not 0.2L of beer for €1!

    Have fun!

Private Tuk Tuk tour will cost circa €50 for 60-90 minutes, also well worth doing.

  17. MIKE IN TORONTO on 5TH JULY 2016 4:40 PM

Totally agree. 1.1m is very low for an international midfielder.

  18. A fully fit Commons would score at least fifteen domestic goals next season – what other midfielder have we got who could do this?

I hope he stays another year at least.

  19. ROBINBHOY

Just back from Lisbon then heading to Silverstone this weekend and then Taiwan hence my lack of availability for the gowf!

A meeting the week after Taiwan in Birmingham for the week so hopefully catch up towards the end of July

agree chump changee, he wsnt that bad.

    tet

thought br would have had some bucks to spend and spent a couple by now.

  22. Bearing in mind that Celtic is responsible for the last year of Johansen’s contract, I very much doubt that the Gross fee is only £1.1m.

  23. timaloy29 sleeps on the heated driveway on

If King Brennie wants to sign some more players, he will surely have to get rid of some.

Who’s left? Scepovic and Stokes were out on loan and have left permanently. I don’t think they count towards our actual squad.

I’m not sure Cole and CKR even count. Cole was effectively gone by January. He was on pay per play and wasn’t playing. I don’t think he has even been in Glasgow since January.

CKR actually started to show some form before he disappeared. I’ve heard it’s a disciplinary issue (who’s surprised by that?)

Meanwhile, we’ve offered Charlie Mulgrew a new deal and Darnell Fisher has appeared in the friendly. I understood that Fisher’s contract was up this summer so maybe he’s getting a chance to play for a new deal.

Rodgers hasn’t made any big decisions on the first team squad yet. That’s his prerogative. He needs to make more decisions before signing new players though.

Joe Allen has played so well he’s priced us out the running. I doubt Swansea will be the only EPL team after him now. The same goes for Hal Robson-Kanu.

If we sign Gunter and Duffy, I’d expect we will be waving goodbye to Efe, Fisher & Janko (possibly on loan)

  24. timaloy29 sleeps on the heated driveway on

Also, it appears Stefan Johansen is off as he isn’t signing a new deal. Fair decision. Get some money back and let Brendan bring in his own players.

I’d say the same about Tom Rogic and James Forrest. No point wasting our time on guys who don’t want to be here.

  25. Timhorton

It’s early yet, still seven weeks to go, though I would have thought that getting players in for the qualifiers would have been a priority.

The first two rounds really shouldn’t be a problem, it’s the play off round that we have failed at the past couple of years, you would have imagined that lessons have been learned.

Problem for us is we have no idea what the remit is, what the spend is, if consolidation this season for an all out assault next season is the remit, fair enough, but I somehow doubt it :-)

We are just going to have to wait and see, and suck it up if needs be.
