The difficult task of replacing Commons

447

Brendan Rodgers would have looked at Kris Commons age, position and recent injury record and assumed he’s not going to get much from him this season. He’d not be the first Celtic manager to come to that conclusion about Kris.

Kris has created more chances per minutes played than anyone in a Celtic shirt over the last decade, and that includes the golden era of Nakamura, Maloney and McGeady, which brought us into the Champions League knock out stages for the first time.

He didn’t fit Ronny’s system and might not fit Brendan’s, but to win leagues, cups and qualify for Europe, you need someone who can be relied upon to open obstinate defences, and we’ve struggled to find a better tool for this job than Kris Commons.

He’s in the final year of his final Celtic contract, but if he goes, I hope it’s not before 31 August.

He then flew him to London for a pow wow in week one of the job.

My take was Brendan had feedback from previous management team ref the squad during last season to get some balance he invited Scott as the captain and most senior player for his views

I suspect Brendan then went on to lay down his rules as explained in my post at 19.11, he wants discipline, no big egos, no tantrums in dugouts or dressing room, Scott would relay this back to senior squad members

I would be amazed if he promised Scott a starting slot

    BMCUWPs,

Sorry for the delay in getting back.

The RRM of Rangers First have gone from ‘No money will be spent on anything else whatsover’ (shares)

    To a 5 % admin fee.

    47.5% on projects. One proposed project is;

‘Purchasing Ibrox or otherwise securing our iconic home for supporters.

‘From who?’ Another project is renovations.

47.5% To an unspecified loan vehicle to purchase unspecified shares at an unspecified time. Where’s the loan going? (‘Share purchases from existing shareholders’ Who??)

The option not to go down the project route but only to go ‘down’ the unspecified loan route. Again where’s the loan going?? The Projects?/Who knows.

The reassurance being that it’s ‘not envisaged’ that the project monies ‘won’t be used as general working capital.’

What do the mean by general working capital?

If the RRM are happy with that, it’s all about trust I suppose.

Big bucks involved though. Aiming for 50k members at £50 donation per month plus the initial fee of £500:)))

  3. WC,

Have had a very frustrating day and have come on to CQN for the first time and read your post @7.41. Cheered me up no end. Give my regards to Auldheid, one of my Celtic heroes.

Thanks, I will, once I acclimatise to the heat. Was over 30c today. It’s been about 15 or less wher I live.

Ref Joe Hanson, Commons, Rogic etc.

I normally agree if players don’t want to be with us, then they can gtf. However I can’t help but feel disappointed in Rogic, after us showing him good support through what could have been a career ending injury…….but if his heids no in it…..well watch the door disnae skelp yer erch on the way oot.

  5. Good evening from a sunny North Staffs

Just logged on great to see so many football related posts – it will never catch on.

I think SB will get a start tomorrow – would be surprised if any promises were made.

Biton is a lovely footballer but too much back or across for me.

SJ based on last season, i’d take the money.

KC best creative player we have had for a while, needs to prove his fitness.

Winning Captains – are you teasing again

BTW for me Commons should stay as a game changing sub, but he better change his attitude from last season.

Hoooowwwweeeeeeevvvaaahhh, Chas Mulgrew? Walking off the pitch? For me watch, erchie, door!!!

I also don’t think any promises were made, i’m reading it that BR will have identified Brown as his dressing room leader and on filed general.

SB will have received glowing reports from the coaching and management staff given his involvement in many aspect of the club outside of his remit, for example, his presence at an extrodinary number of youth team games and – benders not withstanding – is seen as the team leader.

I think the role is his to lose, but no promises would ever be made.

  12. Sammy was a good footballer, Efe has ability & Nir probably has the best technique of any of our current squad. Yet all three have came in for heavy criticism amongst the support. Yes they all had/have flaws to their games but I tell you what. I’d much rather have good footballers in my team than guys who’s second touch is often a tackle & who’s passing is more than suspect. Funny how these types of players seem to escape the most criticism.

I guess many prefer the blood & snotters approach, me I prefer good footballers.

Unless a very silly offer comes in then I’d much rather we keep guys like Bitton. As for me we need more of this type of quality throughout the team certainly not less of it.

  13. Just had a chance to read back. Re: Kriss Commons, I got this opened link sent to me from a mate, it’s from the record…

“Our Parkhead blogger admits he’s in love with the playmaker who has vowed to stay and fight for his Hoops place.”

    Anybody know who they mean?

For me Kriss deserves a chance to prove himself.

WDH … you and BRTH … that sounds like trouble! :)

I have never been much of a drinker, but of late, starting having a few ciders. And had a lovely amarone last week… developing an appreciation for some of it (not beers or spirits, yet) … but had an amazing white at Liam’s recently… so maybe my palate is maturing somewhat.

Just had a look at that Alborne Estate one you recommended. Great reviews for that price. And it sounds like it would something that KT would love …. and I usually enjoy finding wines that she will like more than I like finding them for myself …. (and not just because it gets me in the good books!) So, much obliged!

I will have a listen to that interview. Thanks for finding it and posting it.

    Cheers pal!

  15. More than just a hunch, but bhoys I foresee this line-up both in terms of personnel and formation, as being the side to lead us through in to the Champs league group stages :

    ———————–C.Gordon————————-

    Jancko/Lustig. Erik. Toure Tierney

    ——–Brown. Rogic. Armstrong———

    ——P.Roberts. Griffiths. Dembele——

Subs : Ajer, Allan, Christie, Bailly, Jancko or Lustig

    Thoughts ?

  16. I temper that by saying, that in away games a more pragmatic approach….

    And nae Griffiths

  17. I’m sure thems at eufa are not impressed with the sfa, but they won’t do anything about it, to do so would reflect badly on them.

Just like in the US of A just now, I see that Clinton is getting off with the email thing, the FBI have decreed that she broke the law but not enough to charge her, now had this not been a run up against Trump, she may well have had to answer a few harder questions, or maybes not, her hubby is getting away with rape and sexual assault so a few dodgy e mails ain’t that big a deal.

They are all as bent as nine bob notes and they don’t care, cos they can and will get away with whatever they want.

  18. mike in toronto on

Ruggysman …. you might not be far off, but what I think is missing from that team is football intelligence, and, particularly, a QB type, the brains, who can direct the team on the pitch. Ihad hoped that Armstrong would have provided that, but he hasn’t shown much, and certainly not as much as I had hoped/expected when we signed him (I had big hopes for him).

I still think the best option is to put Erick in the middle of the park …. although I have high hopes for young Ajer …. he looks young, but like he has all the tools, just needs a bit of experience.

TET … sadly, I think you are right. EUFA is, much like the SFA, looking out for themselves … Given their prolonged silence, I am questioning if the guys that run our club are really that different?

  19. And certainly from what I hear and what I can gather Rodgers is open to formation and tactical flexibility. Another formation I believe he will try through course of the season, is the old diamond formation….

The FBI boss didn’t want to end up on the Clinton’s murder list so he didn’t put her in jail.

Lymmbhoy…. After his first season, I thought that NB, if he moved forward 10 yards and was a bit more aggressive, would be the lynchpin for Celtic. But he never really moved forward … if anything, he has gone backwards of late. But I think he has the skill for that role… just not sure he has the right attitude for it.
