The draw of a lifetime

120

Our Champions League rivals have had a very mixed few days.  Tuesday’s opponents Borussia Dortmund were thrashed 5-1 on Sunday by Stuttgart.  That’s a painful one for last season’s Champions League finalists, who face Bochum on Friday.

Last night Atalanta lost at home to Como, giving the visitors their first win of the season, showing the Europa League holders are far from invincible.  We face them in Italy in four weeks.

Leipzig gave St Pauli their only point of the season in a 0-0 draw on Sunday.  St Pauli had only 30% possession but interestingly had the lion’s share of chances.  There is a method of getting to Leipzig.

The roof fell in on Brugge, who lost 2-4 at home to Gent on Sunday.  As with Leipzig, Brugge enjoyed 70% possession, they even had an incredible 80% of chances in the game, but lost four goals to a Gent side who only had three shots on target (assisted by an own goal).

Gent are above Brugge in the table, so that split between chances and goals is more likely to be a strategic determination by Gent than a random result.  As with Leipzig, there is a way to get at Brugge.

Dinamo Zagreb lost 4-1 at bottom club Slaven Belupo on Saturday.  Slaven remain bottom of the table despite that win.

Young Boys got their first win in seven league games this season at bottom side Winterthur.  which sees them rise to 9th.  We don’t face the Swiss champions until 22 January, lots can change between now and then.

Our only opponents who seem to be motoring with any consistency are Aston Villa, who beat Wolves on Saturday, won at Wycombe in the League Cup last night and sit a point behind Manchester City in the EPL.

This could be the best Champions League draw Celtic get in our lifetimes.  I fully expect a near-impossible playoff opponent next season, so let’s make the most of this one.

There’s more of these on YouTube – absolutely brilliant every one of them. I emailed Celtic about a year ago asking that they do similar either on their own or in conjunction with a sponsor and silence was the loud reply. I might try again via JPT and see what happens.

Do a search on the FSR site for ” fair presentation” of accounts.

Now from 2001 onwards Rangers accounts had one/two line entries that mentioned ebts.

    No mention of side letters.

“Fair presentation” is a general accounting term that requires the accounts to be an honest reflection of the undertakings of the business.

That requirement existed in UEFA regs from at least 2005 and I doubt the accounts from 2001 would have complied.

The requirement still exist and given UEFA know all about ebts and side letters the SFA failed to ask questions about for 10 years, I reckon the SFA and R2ngers will be subject to just a bit more scrutiny than before.

R2ngers is an entity that cannot be honest about itself, so what are chances it can be honest with others?

  10. Certainly are interesting perspective on this seasons Champions League.

The new format seems to give more games and opportunities to middle ranked “Champions”

And although a favourable “path” for Celtic we face some very good teams most away from home.

“This could be the best Champions League draw Celtic get in our lifetimes. I fully expect a near-impossible playoff opponent next season, so let’s make the most of this one.

Our away record in the UCL is, and it can’t be sugarcoated, awful

Our last three seasons of UCL qualifiers saw us put out by Cluj, Ferenvacos and Midtjylland.

Sure, we have improved markedly this year but our Pedigree is woeful and one good game in fortress Celtic Park hasn’t changed that.

Always OpTIMistic but if we get any points from the next three games we will have done exceedingly well.

It is often more difficult to face a (lesser) top team in form team (as we will face in our next matches) than a big name on the wane…

Having said all that, we have got back to back UCL wins for the first time in ages and we are much better prepared for Europe than we have been in a decade…

    So…

    We’ll see…

Enjoying the fsr chat, informative as per.

However still find it incredible we do not implement it at our own sfa level.regardless what Neil Doncaster thinks.

    HH

    …..

I suspect the issue is that the league can’t afford the overhead of the minibus of accountants and lawyers to manage the process.

The Hun would see a local FSR as a challenge rather than a set of guidelines and would be constantly lobbying for changes to the rules in their favour when it suits them.

I suspect Doncaster is daft the right way on this topic.

  12. Dortmund playing on Friday night and us playing a whole day later (Premier Sports live game) at 17:30 will likely have a strong influence on the outcome of the game.

The Dortmund game is Tuesday as well. Not much recovery time.

Did we have any say in the timing of our fixture?

I bet we make more money for one CL win than the whole of the league get for the whole Premier sports deal!

  13. SS

a lot of the empty seats would have been in the Falkirk section and a lot of others would have been HCTS scheme; paid for but not attending, like me.

I watched on the TV and was surprised how full it was for Falkirk televised game. Big gaps at Hearts would have been partly due to the 2 plane issues out of Dublin. Guy on my plane had stacks of STs to dish out across Irish CSCs

  14. Ek bhoy.

Respect your point tho,I don’t think it should be down to a right or wrong way but a transparent and uniform way that we as fans/customers of the Scottish game can see clearly.

I don’t see how they could have the power to see fsr as a challenge as the sfa would be setting up their parameters to fall within Uefa guidelines.

Doncaster would have the domestic governing body and Uefa to back him up,and unlike England the nooklub are always in European competition.

As Auldheid tells us in his 3.53 side letter were omitted in their reporting, ebts mentioned twice as ubend-gers reported.

Given the chance I suspect R2angers would evade info too,but we don’t know that at this moment as Doncaster doesn’t like it.

After 2012 every rule possible should be imported and incorporated in our game, especially financial ones, but hey ho :-))

    Near impossible?

    Really?

I assume you believe we have a decent chance of winning the league this season?

If so, which champions of which countries in the mix fill you with such resignation?

The good news is, Kilmarnock are scheduled to scrap their plastic pitch at the end of this season.

That means the only clubs with artificial surfaces will be Livingston, Raith Rovers and Airdrie.

In an ideal world goodwill and cooperation would be default , so that the rules can be followed and administered fairly for everyone. Sadly , in Scottish football that is not the case , with the Hun being the bad actor.

They would complain about the timing of its introduction, unfair as they need to spend more to catch up ; complain about the lawyers and accountants affiliations , surnames , complain about their suggestions for improving the rules being rejected and on and on it goes . It would be another squirrel to deflect away from poor performance on the field but a they would also use this to gain concessions elsewhere from the league.

Trust and goodwill is absent and we need to just look at the away fans fiasco at the OF , we can’t take them at their word , only their actions

Tom, Hearts don’t need much hiding, having sat in their stand it was as bad, if not worse than ibrox. maybe Hearts have more than their fair share of bigots.

It’s not tarring Hearts but the open displays of hidden sectarianism that courses thro Scotland

*it’s the day of the black walk and a crowd of us are sitting in a pub on the bonnie bonnie banks, it’s a mixed crowd tae, we are away tae Stirling in the LC which is only a hop skip and jump away fae where were sitting, the huns had a home game with the bankies, but the super sons, after 50 years in the wilderness, were at home tae the calvinists in the same tournament, so a bunch of us, a couple of diehard zombies notwithstandin, decided tae go intae boagheid for their home opener.

It was a gorgeous late summers day with a more than healthy crowd but over in the opposite terracing were the scum as that’s who they were with their chants of “jimmy johnstone is a fairy eff the pope and the virgin mary” as well as “eff your harry, lou macari, kevin barry, harry hood”, meanwhile 3 of those plyers mentioned would be turning out for the bhoys less than an hour away up the A811 while the other lad of 18 summers gave his life for his country almost 50 year before.

Those chants didnae go unnoticed, boagheid is one of those grounds where you can walk round changing ends depending on where your side is shooting intae, so the mad mental young People’s Republic of Brucehill Tims made their way round to confront this horrible mob, all hell broke loose as they ran away as the song says “demanding police protection as a guard against the bhoys and also cursed the Pope in Rome”, and to further add tae their woes they lost 1-0 to a Celtic supporting Roy McCormack goal plus when they reached the local common where their busses were parked they found all the windaes panned in.

No done yet, 4 months later and they’re back again in League business, I’m now working for a contract company in one of the distilleries just down the road fae boagheid, we’re away at Easter Road that day but me and a Tim pal opted tae work the Saturday, time and a half for the morning and double bubble for the afternoon, its also a “job and finish” which means that we can leave as soon as we are done and still get paid for the full shift, so around hauf two we louse for the day and take off for boagheid buying a couple of cans enroute.

We were in the Dumbarton version of their coo shed and when the final whittle went at a 0-2 loss for the “firewatchers”, as the locals called their team, made our way to the exit, just as I did I heard my name being called and it was an older former bluenose work colleague, a decent guy as I had bought a house off of him on my return hame fae the colonies a couple of years before, “great result for you the day Tontine” he said, so I asked whit the score was and he replied “4-2 at Easter Road”, now cock a hoop I went intae the lavvy only tae see it full of the marron huns without bus fares.

One of them standing beside me said tae his mate “see the effin animals won the day”, you would think that they would be delighted their cross town rivals had lost but naw, now this was also during the period of power cuts and 3 day weeks so the huns were playing on the Sunday which was now permitted, so a cheeky see you next Thursday me said “:naw the animals are playing the morra”, just then I felt my collar getting tugged and its my bluenose friend pulling me out of there before as he said I get my heid kicked in, but that just illustrates how much they hate us more than a club who allegedly had James Connolly as a ball boy.

  19. Dortmund are more known for being a tourist attraction tather than for football ability.

  20. EK BHOY 6.44.,

    Let them complain.its the rules.

If those rules fit in with uefa rules and mean if they fit sfa rules then uefa rules are a formality.

They can get as many lawyers and accountants at their own expense to question but if they do not meet open and transparent sfa rules they default with uefa.

It would also denote we do not have 1 team questioning the sfa and treating it as its own chatel, which it did to 2012 and is still doing with this under the nooklub.

An opportunity for rues to be laid down and adhered to,otherwise why have fsr if we don’t have compliance.

Ps just as I type a hibee on querying why he does not know if he is going to £1 park on Saturday.yet another example of nooklub making its rules up as they go.diff issue I know but same supremacist attitude
