The Eddie Howe lesson in discretion

295

There are names suggested as being on Celtic’s shortlist, but there is no informed comment.  This mirrors the appointments of Ange Postecoglou in 2021 and Brendan Rodgers in 2023.

The day Ange accepted the offer, almost the entire body of Celtic fans had to look up how to spell his name.  Brendan’s return was met more by incredulity than expectation.  The weeks before Ange’s appointment influenced Celtic.  While John Kennedy was interim manager, the club openly pursued Eddie Howe.

Howe was (and is) a successful manager, Celtic were keen and most of us believed he would have been a good fit.  That positive narrative seeped out of Celtic Park, only to crash when Howe declined the opportunity.

Compare and contrast to the open briefings last month across the city, as sources close to the club churned through a number of candidates who were close to being announced as manager, only to decline.

Information is currency and those low on other currencies can use information to buy favour with the media.  Whether the information is good or bad does not matter to the media, who only need to attract eyeballs.  If we are told Steven Gerrard is to be appointed manager within a few days and it doesn’t happen, they have another story to tell us when the bomb drops.  Everyone wins (not really).

The Eddie Howe fiasco was a lesson in discretion.  Business like this is best conducted in private.  All we know for sure is that the boards have been cleared.  Brendan’s crew, alongside John Kennedy and chief scout Jay Lefevre have all left the building.  I don’t know who will be manager, but he will be the first of several new appointments in the coaching and scouting department.

  1. So Sky are saying that they have still to talk with O’Neill and Maloney about possibly extending their stay.

Our board don’t have a fecking clue what they are doing, what a effin debacle,

  2. THE EXILED TIM – ALthough nothing would surprise me, I expect MoN is speaking to the board on a regular basis. Assuming he is interested in whether he will be there for a week or a month, I doubt he is not asking for updates. I also assume he has DD on speed dial and would go above the board if they were stonewalling him.

  3. My take on all the new managers , is , if we do not change any of the bores ( board) , then we could get Pep or Klopp and there would be little difference or improvement

Nothing will change, but I suspect the meeting between MON and the bold Desmond may have Martin in as Director of football Operations, certainly hope so

It seems a little curious to say the least that one of the (bookies’) favourites for the Celtic job – widely acknowledged as one of the most challenging in the game – has managed fewer than 100 matches in top level football.

That’s not a lot of data to draw upon in making an assessment.

Meanwhile another chap was managing college football in Canada before he got a shot with an MLS side less than 3 years ago.

I think only Lenny mark 1 had less experience going back as far as Liam Brady.

Given our successful managers last less than 3 years in the job, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of value in ‘growing our own’. He’ll no sooner have figured it out than he’ll be offski.

And that’s if he figures it out at all.

It just feels counter-intuitive. This isn’t a job for a promising youngster.

On a less frivolous note Pablo … I enjoyed your leader.

I like Eddie Howe and I like watching his Newcastle team.

Decent mix of good old fashioned sturdiness and aggression with sprinklings of skill and guile.

Plenty of pace and power in the team.

(Dan Burn is in it too)

But they are a yo-yo club structurally.

Can’t compete turnover wise with the big six … even though they have rich owners who some expect to “just spend the money”

    Pesky FSR.

So they make the Champions League, fail while daring greatly, deplete the energy in the squad, fall off performance wise, take a season and a half to recover, make the Champions League …

    … and repeat.

As for the messaging bit? Agree.

World is full of legal entities with nothing to say but who speak anyway.

MoN doesn’t strike me as someone who suffers fools, given that I imagine his talks will be with the head honcho.

We are weeks in and by the looks of things no further forward than we were weeks ago, hopefully I am wrong but.

Thing is we are in the position cos of the board and their obsession with the OF, we have had numerous opportunity’s to get rid, but we seem hell bent on the attachment, that is where the problem lies IMO.

“Terry Cassidy ( mind him? ) CEO that thought football managers were a pure waste of time and money.”

    …….

Terry Cassidy the first ‘outsider’ CEO in fairness didn’t last long due to his performance on the board , a bit like Dom McKay

    ______

Yes Cassidy was for the watching alright, but he was just a running down the clock, shield, for McGinn and co.

On the 2nd “SAVE OUR CELTS” meeting thanks to the invisible LEGEND, WILLIE WILSON, Cassidy was there as a guest on stage getting his ass fried, he couldn’t believe that fans were upset at his ‘leaked’ suggestion that Celtic fans should pay an extra 2 quid per week and it would be used as a funding source to buy new players?!

Cassidy and some guy called, MIKE RYAN, from, Chrystal Palace, were this scheme was supposed to be in use and Cassidy was said to want this at Celtic as well.

He sat up on stage and his head was sunken onto the table, after he had stopped banging it off the table, for most of the meeting, as he asked fans:”WHERE DO YOU THINK ALL OF THIS MONEY IS GOING TO COME FROM, TO BUY ALL OF THESE PLAYERS THAT YOU FANS SAY WE NEED?”

This right here is the problem still to this day.

Why can’t we just get a “coach” who will shape whatever players are there into a team, no matter the tactics, JUST GET IT DONE, should be the new Celtic Way.

Or as ROY KEANE used to say on ITV’s CL Highlights program, after every Brendan-1 CL massacre, RK:

“THAT ISN’T CELTIC OUT THERE BEING HAMMERED 0-7.

    CELTIC DON’T PLAY LIKE THAT.

CELTIC ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO WIN.

IF THIS WAS UNDER, NEIL LENNON, OR RONNY DEILA, THE FANS WOULD BE WANTING THEM SACKED!

    AND QUITE RIGHT TOO!

BUT BECAUSE IT IS AN EX-EPL MANAGER, BRENDAN RODGERS, HE GETS AWAY WITH IT!

    THIS ISN’T CELTIC!

    CELTIC DON’T OPERATE LIKE THIS!

WHAT IS GOING ON UP THERE?

    JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH.”

    Aye he did you know.

And then there was, Dominic McKay. The stunt mhan. lol

We lost 10 in a row. Fans wanted Lawwell out. And he did leave as well, to sit round the corner at the Clydebank carpark, in a darkened out windows, JAMES BOND, type of car.

Waiting for the phone call, ot text, to say that ALL SEASON TICKETS were sold out.

And as if by MAGIC, PETER LAWWELL returned as, a non official kind of guy with ZERO influence. SUPER LOL.

We truly are a FAIRY STORY club.

But the SACKING OF THE PLC MUST go full steam ahead now….or they will sell the club….and blame it on Russian hackers….or some other guff.

What a time to be alive.

  14. The danger in all of this is that, DERMOT DESMOND, is not going to come out cap in hand and say that he overreacted and now wants to make things right.

    NO.

DD will not stand on a golf course full of rich anti Palestinians and tell them that the Celtic fans got him bang to rights.

So he had to come down from his ivory tower and break bread with them.

    NO.

DD is a product of an Irish state that couldn’t get further away from the working class principles of, JAMES CONNOLLY, even if it tried.

So negotiating with DD’s kind of mindset will lead to an inevitable back door stitch up.

Who do you think was behind the recruitment drive to bring in players from the anti Palestine country in the middle east?

How many was it 4 players, in the Celtic 1st team?

    FFS!

Is that the REAL reason why NEIL FRANCIS LENNON got the hell out of the place in 2014/15????

Where was the Celtic Collective when this was being done to the club, and fans were unaware, because the Genocide was not being reported on the BBC, or the even worse, The Guardian pish wrapper, in those days?!

DD is dangerous, and his entire executive has to be removed with him, as NOT A SINGLE ONE of them can be trusted.

[[[[The fans now have to grab the Celtic PLC bull by the horns and physically throw it out of the boardroom window, all one after another.]]]]

Or the PLC will [SLYLY] create a Manchester United vs The Glaziers situation, were one day you will look at your phone and it will be full of announcements about “CELTIC’S NEW OWNERS” and not one single Celtic fan will have a say in any aspect of the club.

I think that has already happened with the Huns but they don’t know it yet.

    Oh dear.

Can you imagine Celtic and Rangers just BOTH AT THE SAME TIME disappearing into the night never to be seen again.

PS, Fergus McCann was ALL FOR selling the club to some [obscure] Japanese company in his last season at the club, with a board full of puppets nodding along, including, SIR WULLIE HAUGHEY, aye!

I like EH and really hope he’s our manager one day.

The £90m in the bank iis still ours/Celtics….its not been pocketed by directors/owners.

I wish they would tell us the plan right enough but that money would be in the likes of the Glaziers or Cavsnaghs pockets and not sitting in our bank account gathering interest.

    Lastly…a prediction. re Sevco..

.Marathe (?) and any other connection to the SF49ers will dissappear around March time as planned.

They WILL or maybe have already, buy the stadium and lease it back on a 50 year deal for around £1m a month which will cripple them.

Defo lastly…they bought the huns for about £20m not £80m as thought.
