The Eddie Howe lesson in discretion

There are names suggested as being on Celtic’s shortlist, but there is no informed comment.  This mirrors the appointments of Ange Postecoglou in 2021 and Brendan Rodgers in 2023.

The day Ange accepted the offer, almost the entire body of Celtic fans had to look up how to spell his name.  Brendan’s return was met more by incredulity than expectation.  The weeks before Ange’s appointment influenced Celtic.  While John Kennedy was interim manager, the club openly pursued Eddie Howe.

Howe was (and is) a successful manager, Celtic were keen and most of us believed he would have been a good fit.  That positive narrative seeped out of Celtic Park, only to crash when Howe declined the opportunity.

Compare and contrast to the open briefings last month across the city, as sources close to the club churned through a number of candidates who were close to being announced as manager, only to decline.

Information is currency and those low on other currencies can use information to buy favour with the media.  Whether the information is good or bad does not matter to the media, who only need to attract eyeballs.  If we are told Steven Gerrard is to be appointed manager within a few days and it doesn’t happen, they have another story to tell us when the bomb drops.  Everyone wins (not really).

The Eddie Howe fiasco was a lesson in discretion.  Business like this is best conducted in private.  All we know for sure is that the boards have been cleared.  Brendan’s crew, alongside John Kennedy and chief scout Jay Lefevre have all left the building.  I don’t know who will be manager, but he will be the first of several new appointments in the coaching and scouting department.

    I always think these old bands head to one extreme or the other.

     

     

    They can either nail a live performance in their sleep

     

     

    OR

     

     

    They’re just a shadow of themselves touring for the money.

     

     

    A few years Toto were headlining the Cognac Blues Festival – we just happened to be on holiday in the area – so took the kids to see them.

     

     

    As we drove in that evening I tried to set expectations.

     

     

    They’ve changed the line up several times.

     

     

    They’ve split and reformed.

     

     

    They’ve all been in rehab or Betty Ford.

     

     

    They’ve fallen out, had creative differences.

     

     

    You’ll recognise the tunes but they are old men who might just be off it.

     

     

     

    How wrong was I ?

     

     

    They didn’t drop a note or miss a cue all night.

    There are questions whether this manager or that are good enough for us (Shaun, Martin, Neil, Ronny etc)

     

    More importantly tho, are we good enough for really capable or promising managers?

     

    I mean – aside from a step-stone to the EPL – who are we really?

     

    Definitely a club that gets its ribbons on goldfish pond silver with impressive regularity.

     

    And a club that makes a lot of money by commercialising sponsor exposure to a fanatical global support.

     

    But apart from 1967, 1970, 1972 and 2003, some fans might see us as over-hyped under-achievers (some Engerlish lads at my football club have said so).

     

    What fundamental changes are needed for us to stop relying on our illustrious history as plucky underdogs.

    One thing that stands out with many of the remaining posters on here, one of whom. Quadro, not too far back, is a sense of entitlement, which paradoxically you do not find with the like of Burnley78. We have an almost unique route to Europe in that we have had unbroken access to it for all of this century. Haven’t always done as well as we hope we might, but over the same period we have played against some of the greatest football clubs in World football, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and beaten, amongst them, AC Milan, Barcelona, Benfica (thanks Aiden), Manchester United et al whilst clubs like Newcastle, Aston Villa and Notts Forest go decades without setting foot across the channel, or in Crystal Palace’s case competing in Europe for the first time in their history. Our Chairman and our biggest shareholder maligned, and yet they helped bury our greatest rival, the BOS financed MIH fronted RFC. Domestic success is disdained, yet MONs treble in 2001 was our first since 1969. And somehow this entitlement has morphed into a hatred of the Board, not genuine criticism, but animus, personal attacks and campaigns against bona fide Celtic Supporting members. No, not for me, not down that road, it’s not always easy, but as Oldtim67 used to try and stress on here there is a kind of joy to supporting Celtic Football Club, one that many on here seem to have forgotten…

    So basically CELTICMAC you’ve deduced I’m entitled for pondering/wondering whether we’re as big news as we might have been, despite the largely easy path to Europe we’ve had and with the mighty resources and wealth at our disposal (how much in the ole bank atm??)

     

     

    Since 2004, I don’t think we’ve won a single European knockout tie ?

     

     

    And, what, you and Burnley are better supporters than anyone else on here who muses – not even criticises the club – cos you’re zen with domestic domination and sneaking the odd result against big fish clubs?

     

     

    Different strokes I know but wondering who we are in the fitba world isn’t the mark of entitlement.

    Utter crock. Untrue. That’s not me or my style. I don’t hate Board; never said so but believe they could do way better (as they acknowledge themselves). I’ve variously credited PL, yet suggested he made errors. I never personally attack any posters on here despite to and fro disagreements. I largely believe respect is vital.

    It has entitlement written all over it….and through it

     

    It is that, in my view, level of entitlement, that leads to, and or contributes to, the animus towards the Celtic Board, (and its’ Celtic supporting members), that we are witnessing now. I will use the same language I used against James Forrest some years ago, it is not the one road, it is not the right road, it is the wrong road, that some, if not you, then others, are following, one which ultimately stresses the disappointments, and ignores the joy (copyright OldTim67) of supporting Celtic Football Club.

    Still, you prompted me to self-reflect if my writing relayed (even unconscious) entitlement. I asked ChatGPT to check my post for entitlement. This is what it deduced…

    Not a word from any of these talking heads about the FACT, that Rodgers kept last seasons transfer window intake[ which he said he was delighted with] all on the bench as we failed to defeat Kiarat.

     

    Why has nobody from TCC asked about match fixing?

     

    Are Celtic employees immune from crime, especially the richer employees?

     

    How will we ever know if we only speak to echo chambers?

     

    Rodgers threw the SCF last season to Aberdeen, and almost succeeded in throwing the the same trophy to the Huns the season before.

     

    Why did Bernardo and Idah get the Rodgers doghouse treatment, AFTER, winning the cup for Celtic fans?

     

    If asking these questions are too difficult for Celtic fans, what do you think laying down the law to the PLC sharks will be like?

     

    Desmond and the rest should have been sacked for far worse things than the Rodgers virus which has demonstrated how many vacant signs are flashing out of Celtic fans eyes.

     

    Its written all over MON’s face that he realizes that the Celtic supporter base are educated by the 24 hour fake news cycle.

     

    Why don’t TCC inquire as to why Rangers and their fans were well aware that C19 was not an issue, but the entire Celtic supporter base were on their knees in front of their TV’s being brainwashed by krankie and the 24 hour Fake News cycle, and actually turned out to be the biggest collection of Karen’s anywhere outside of the Democratic party in America.

     

    Point is, people were tricked by the media, politicians, planted celebrities, yet the dumb Huns were clued up about how this was a scam, and highly educated Tims fell hook line and sinker for EVERY C19 lie.

     

    Do you think that the board are unaware of this landscape as well?

     

    What if Desmond says I’m selling my Celtic shares to the highest bidder cause I’m a business man.

     

    And some unheard of fly by night appears and buys out Desmond, on the same day.

     

    And nobody knows who he is.

     

    This share pish is a Tory trap.

     

    You’ll probably find that the vast MAJORITY of shareholders actually bought shares in 1994 so that we had a stadium to play in.

     

    How many of them are still alive?

     

    Where was TCC when the PLC tried to throw the CBC abuse victims under the bus, and then lied their erchies aff aboot it?

     

    Was the CBC abuse victims not a bigger deal than a Karen Rodgers mind virus, to seek regime change.

     

    Morals are fake, or convenient when they suit.

     

    What if MON leaves when the new guy comes in, and the new guy turns out to be a planted erchie, because the Huns need the CL money?

     

    What then?

     

    Season ticket boycott?

     

    The PLC have enough spare money more than a 100 million quid lying under the boardroom table, how many seasons worth of season tickets does that cover?

     

    The fans will be on their knees on Season Ticket Renewal Deadline day, on the Celtic way saying vigils about how stopping buying tickets is just a bridge too far.

     

    All TORY THATCHER seating has created the ticket trap.
