There are names suggested as being on Celtic’s shortlist, but there is no informed comment. This mirrors the appointments of Ange Postecoglou in 2021 and Brendan Rodgers in 2023.
The day Ange accepted the offer, almost the entire body of Celtic fans had to look up how to spell his name. Brendan’s return was met more by incredulity than expectation. The weeks before Ange’s appointment influenced Celtic. While John Kennedy was interim manager, the club openly pursued Eddie Howe.
Howe was (and is) a successful manager, Celtic were keen and most of us believed he would have been a good fit. That positive narrative seeped out of Celtic Park, only to crash when Howe declined the opportunity.
Compare and contrast to the open briefings last month across the city, as sources close to the club churned through a number of candidates who were close to being announced as manager, only to decline.
Information is currency and those low on other currencies can use information to buy favour with the media. Whether the information is good or bad does not matter to the media, who only need to attract eyeballs. If we are told Steven Gerrard is to be appointed manager within a few days and it doesn’t happen, they have another story to tell us when the bomb drops. Everyone wins (not really).
The Eddie Howe fiasco was a lesson in discretion. Business like this is best conducted in private. All we know for sure is that the boards have been cleared. Brendan’s crew, alongside John Kennedy and chief scout Jay Lefevre have all left the building. I don’t know who will be manager, but he will be the first of several new appointments in the coaching and scouting department.

Think I can name 8 of the players, anybody come up with them all? por cierto

I recall a bhoy who was on our flight to Lisbon to play Benfica, he was pished on boarding and throughout the two days.
On the day of the match I noticed him staggering up the stairwell, got hold of him and sat him down on a spare seat. He feel asleep and missed the entire game 🙄

Proof positive that Billy McNeill (and John Clark) left Alex Ferguson a very good squad of players indeed, not beyond the realm of possibility that Billy could have won the tile with the Dons. Ally MacLeod deserves bit of credit too. Not sure who signed Gordon Strachan, but wish we had at the time.
No new article?
It was the Board who put Neil Lennon in charge. They also presided over the need to close the Upper Lisbon Lions Stand.
I’m baffled about your ‘tangerines’ comment.
Billy signed Strachan for about 50k and Steve Archibald for 20k

Billy was different class! He came to Aberdeen at the right time in my life and my family’s life and helped my career.
When he came to Aberdeen, I heard that John Clark said to him, “That boy McMaster is a decent player, have a look at him”. John Clark had come to Aberdeen with big Billy and they were watching reserve games and the like. Very clever people, they looked at the players coming through the youths and reserves at the time, a bit like Fergie did later, very similar.
Billy had a winning mentality and he built a good team, we just fell short at the last hurdle with Rangers being magnificent that season – but we hardly lost a game. He played me on a regular basis and put his arm around me and I responded by putting in performances. I had the tools but I’d never had someone like that who believed in me. Billy McNeill played a big part in my career and it took off in his time at Aberdeen.
Both Billy and John had learned from the master in Jock Stein, two Lisbon Lions coached me at Aberdeen, how many people can say that? I only had Billy and John for a year but they made a huge impression on my life. It makes a big difference when someone believes in you.
Billy brought a team of all stars to Pittodrie for my testimonial at a time when the English clubs were banned – Billy got round the ban by saying, “It’s an all-star select, not an English side!” That was the kind of man he was!
I have a lot to thank him for, he was such a great guy and will be sadly missed.
It could be argued – allthought “the Rangers” won a treble in 77/78 the building blocks of a succesful Aberdeen team had been put in place by Billy and John.
Aberdeen cmae in 2nd only 2 points behind them (2 for a win remember). Despite beating them 3 times in the league, and losing the cup final 2-1,
Bizarelly Celtic beat them at Pittodrie, and drew at Celtic park, in a season when we finished 5th.

Silly board driving a cheating opponent out of business and resulting in many fans not enjoying 4 years of turkey shoot football in a league which was a total irrelevance to many outside of Scotland. And many in Scotland.
No tv coverage and no competition meaning no real interest in coming here for overseas talent.
Silly board eh.

So what was Celtics best ever CL result ?
Easy 2-1 v an incredible Barca team at their peak in 2012.
Followed by Man U and Milan. 2006 and 2007.
2 managers reviled and abused by our own. 2 managers detested even by some. Looked down on by other entitled self appointed but bitter experts on here.
2 managers abused by our rivals and one who really did take one for the team personally.
‘Something inside so strong’ was one of my favourite days as a Celtic fan.
Sadly the ‘entitled’ have short and selective memories. Preferring to remember and quote 2021 and 2009 or 2011 rather than remember these great European occasions or the 8 leagues these guys did win against sometimes cheating domestic rivals. The loss of 4 leagues titles in 20 years is astonishing. These 2 played a big part in that against mostly potent backed and resourced rivals.
To do this against the backdrop of the challenges faced and a miserable entitled bunch of experts / consumers in our own so called support is beyond incredible.
Of course they may not be perfect for now. Almost certainly not. I am not advocating that. I am advocating a modicum of respect. Not the booing WGS had in 08 after defeat to Motherwell prior to winning that league. Or the booing of Neil Lennon v Blackburn in the Seville season. Scum like behaviour.
My old man and his would have loved to have the joy Celtic has brought me in my 63 years, never mind that my son has had in his 29. As for the misery it seems to bring many on this blog that is a shame.
As for the money this misery and projecting it brings to those bloggers who seek to perpetrate it …..those who sponge from the gullible sheeplike so called fans I wish there was a way of diverting every penny to the Foundation. These leeches will get their comeuppance.
Of course the club is miles from perfect but ffs show me one which is ? Show me one which has come from where we were in the 40s and 50s to now.
………………………
Another pile of poo from a happy clapper who detests anyone who dares criticise the Celtic Board. Gordon Strachan won three league titles out of four and he took us to the last 16 of the CL twice. He would have taken us to the last 8 if we hadn’t been denied two stonewall penalties in the San Siro. Why drag his name into it? He was a tremendous success. Nearly every Celtic supporter I know liked him and loved how he treated the media with total disdain.
As for Neil Lennon the same thing applies with regard his first stint as Celtic manager. It was the right thing to do to appoint him Interim Manager when BR left for Leicester. He managed the club for around 10 games and successfully concluded the Treble with League and Scottish Cup wins. He should then have been thanked by the Board and paid a handsome bonus instead he was given the job full time after the laziest, most amateurish and shambolicrecruitment exercise ever in the history of Celtic FC much against the wishes of the majority of the Celtic support.
You have the cheek to say you are advocating a modicum of respect yet you yourself show absolutely no respect to posters on here who challenge your agenda or who dare to criticise anything regarding the Celtic Board.
‘Self appointed but bitter experts’, ‘the entitled’, ‘a miserable bunch of entitled experts’, ‘scum like behaviour’, ‘the gullible sheeplike so-called fans’. Yes you’re a great Celtic supporter who seems to regard yourself as superior to the rest of us if we dare to oppose your view.
Away and gies peace.

Our Board didn’t drive our cheating opponents out of business. They achieved that on their own merits.

A FAIT ACCOMPLI.
Take the Name Lennon out of it and imagine for a moment at any other club.
You have an interum manager who wins the 8th succesive title, and completes a season treble.
He himslef , won the first 3 leagues.
Everyone wants the ten.
If you do not retain him, a winning manager, then who do you bring in at that time, who gets you 9 and 10 ?
If they didnt win it, the question would have been why did they not keep the winning manager.
damned if they do and dont
Saint Stivs
If you ignore the feeling of the fans at the time your point is a good one: ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t.’ Celtic fans were looking for a big name appointment at the end of that season. Lenny’s interim record as a manager had not been great in between his first stint as Celtic manager and his interim appointment. He managed at Bolton and I think it may have been Hibs but could be wrong. Anyway I can recall huge disappointment exacerbated by the shambolic appointment in the showers. The Board could have and should have done better.
even these years later, I dont know how you can just let go a winning manager.
back then who should they have appointed ?
St Stivs
Sorry I omitted to make the point that the expectations of the Celtic support had been raised by the tremendous performance of Brendan Rodgers over the previous two and a half seasons and they were looking for a similar appointment. Another ‘elite’ manager if you will. When he left Celtic had an 8 point lead in the League with about 7 games left to negotiate. We were also on the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup. Lenny did well to see both competitions through to a happy conclusion but it was Brendan who laid the foundation for both successes and that is why we wanted someone of his recognised ability.

………………………
I can’t remember who the desirable managerial candidates were at the time but the shambolic way Lenny was appointed rendered getting in a big name meaningless.
It was the Celtic Board who helped them stay in business
If you like your managers getting poured out of taxi’s, pished at 10 in the morning….

The Bada Bing @ 5:54 pm,
“For us, it’s disappointing that they’re not there,” Desmond told BBC Sport.
“But that was a decision by the various clubs, a decision by the various leagues and we accept those decisions.”
“Rangers is a great football club, it has a great history and it’s unfortunate that they have been relegated,” said the Irish businessman.
“We would certainly like to contest with them every week – we believe we’ve got a better team and a better management structure.
“Rangers is a fantastic football club, it is one of the greatest football clubs in Great Britain, we’ve got to acknowledge that. But we can only look after ourselves.”
Dermot Desmond – 3 October 2012
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/19823518
It’s was interesting for me that the bunch of Celtic fans I watched the games with in 2012, it seemed everyone over sixty wanted Rangers “back”, most young ‘uns;) wanted them gone.
Yet six years later no one, not a single supporter I knew wanted Lenny as fulltime manager.
Hail Hail
I’ve never understood why so many on CQN are obsessed by the fact that Neil Lennon was given the job “in the showers” and claiming it was shambolic and an embarrassment to the club.
The truth is that after Lennon sealed the treble, Peter Lawwell was despatched to the dressing room to inform him that the job was his. As it happens, Lenny was in the shower when PL arrived. He was standing at the entrance to the showers with a towel round his waist when he was given the news, which resulted in a huge cheer from everyone in the dressing room.
That’s not a scandal. It’s yet another happy incident that has been weaponised by elements of the support as a stick with which to beat the board, and they probably will for decades to come.
This ain’t a job for a novice and history proved it also.
Who would win a fight between a “novice” and a “busted flush”?
The Battered Bunnet @ 1:21 pm,
Yes, the Celtic job is very challenging and with competition from the Capital as well as Ibrox now – we may well be seeing our domestic dominance threatened.
For me, keep Martin at the helm until we review where the club is headed…
Hooefully less of the “world class” nonsense, a realistic vision, with realistic goals and a battle hardened, experienced quality manager who is supported by the Board to deliver.
Hail Hail
Liam Scales playing for Ireland – Johnny on the bench…

Maybe he should have gone back to his fellow Directors and summoned Neil Lennon to a place more suitable to offer him the job and to leave out the comment about throwing the applications of other candidates into the waste paper basket without reading them. Yes we probably will hear about it for decades to come -perhaps to help ensure that it never happens again.

The Board were aware of the behaviour of Neil at Hibs and Bolton.
They were aware some very serious allegations against Neil had been made by a young woman.
He should have been nowhere near the job.
Venue owners should get blackballed…..
Or checked for bugs 😄
