The Eddie Howe lesson in discretion

295

There are names suggested as being on Celtic’s shortlist, but there is no informed comment.  This mirrors the appointments of Ange Postecoglou in 2021 and Brendan Rodgers in 2023.

The day Ange accepted the offer, almost the entire body of Celtic fans had to look up how to spell his name.  Brendan’s return was met more by incredulity than expectation.  The weeks before Ange’s appointment influenced Celtic.  While John Kennedy was interim manager, the club openly pursued Eddie Howe.

Howe was (and is) a successful manager, Celtic were keen and most of us believed he would have been a good fit.  That positive narrative seeped out of Celtic Park, only to crash when Howe declined the opportunity.

Compare and contrast to the open briefings last month across the city, as sources close to the club churned through a number of candidates who were close to being announced as manager, only to decline.

Information is currency and those low on other currencies can use information to buy favour with the media.  Whether the information is good or bad does not matter to the media, who only need to attract eyeballs.  If we are told Steven Gerrard is to be appointed manager within a few days and it doesn’t happen, they have another story to tell us when the bomb drops.  Everyone wins (not really).

The Eddie Howe fiasco was a lesson in discretion.  Business like this is best conducted in private.  All we know for sure is that the boards have been cleared.  Brendan’s crew, alongside John Kennedy and chief scout Jay Lefevre have all left the building.  I don’t know who will be manager, but he will be the first of several new appointments in the coaching and scouting department.

  1. Alcohol to be sold at Pittodrie.Wow,Aberdeen fans on the lash at the game.Estimates say they expect the Bars to take in between £30-50 per game.

  2. Turkey! As a NE bhoy, I resemble that remark.

You know that copper wire was invented by two Aberdonians fighting over a penny – old ones are the best.

Not sure about your economics – they seem optimistic 🙂

  3. Before I depart, does anyone REALLY think the mob allegedly down in”That London”,will do anything fekin useful?.We are back in serious action next weekend.I don’t mind MON and Sean standing in,but I don’t trust the halfwits doing the recruiting.

Great result for Ireland last night, well played Liam Scales, immense.

    Laxalt @ 8:59 pm,

    Fullstops aren’t necessarily “wrong”.

It’s like I said to your friend Celtic40me a little time back, be careful what you wish for.

The Rodgers loathers seemed to have forgotten something.

They have been repeating the tired old mantras for so long now they have started to believe their own propaganda.

With the business politics within Celtic Park, manifesting the cult of personality and the blame culture the hierarchy’s perception of what happens at Celtic and what is needed at Celtic is highly flawed.

Having business types who think they have got the only winning strategy, back slapping and high fiving each other for twenty years means their judgement and decision making has gone to the dogs.

When Martin O’Neill came into Celtic twenty five years ago, he had a world class striker in Henrik Larrson and bought Chris Sutton from Chelsea who would be a 30 mn striker in today’s market.

Our retrenchment of the football club and dogmatic business approach by the PLC over the last twenty one years has regressed the Club beyond all recognition.

We look like a club starved of investment, more to the point is a Board starved of ideas.

What the Rodgers loathers forgot was he is a highly competent manager and coach, with a good staff and implemented a solid football structure at Lennoxtown.

Yet the club greatly needed modernised and real investment, BR&Co were a bandage covering a festering sore.

By not supporting him and getting rid of him prematurely the Celtic Board have exposed the wound and made a huge rod for their own back.

With record breaking financials and little investment in the club this summer, the general support have had more than enough, they want to results and improvement.

And that’s the issue isn’t it – the Board can always do the easy stuff, the chopping back, the retrenchment, the sackings but the innovative thinking, the quality decision making, that is beyond them, as their attachment to the “old firm” model has proven.

They now need to employ a better manager than Brendan Rodgers, better coaches than Kennedy, Sadler and Jack Lyons – it now looks like our Head of Performance Glen Driscoll knew what he was doing after all and not replacing him immediately was a big mistake.

The football department needs restructuring and the football squad rebuilding.

The blame culture will try to stick that on those who have left but that won’t wash and no one in our hierarchy has the first clue as to how to fix this.

You lot have won, “toxic ted” has gone – congratulations.

So why are you all so miserable, a solid dose of reality perchance!?

Like I say – be careful what you wish for.

    Hail Hail

You are morphing into a Kev Jungle poster – repetitive ad nauseum.

I am sure the vast majority of supporters can see that the problems at Celtic go beyond Brendan Rodgers – but also that Brendan Rodgers was definitely a problem.

You and B78 seem to be respective cheerleaders for Brendan Vs Board – maybe you should just swap email addresses or meet up in the pub?

  8. Tim Malone Will Tell @ 10:00 am,

Brendan Rodgers and Co have moved on.

    So have I.

The posters who have damaged the Manager and coaches reputation and have done so much damage to the blog continue.

Laxalt called me a liar, I’m supposed to take that and I’m supposed to met folk in the pub because you sat so.

Who I meet and where I meet them is up to me – so don’t be telling me what to do.

I probably spend a lot less time in pubs than you do.

    Hail Hail

I think you are confusing me with BRRB :-)

Post what you like, whenever you like – but when you referred to Auldheid as a board placeman a couple of weeks ago, your objectivity and credibility took a significant hit.

  10. Tim Malone Will Tell @ 10:24 am,

You have some brass neck of some – four comments in ten hours.

Only one covering the subject on the lead article and you are having an a conceited pop at me.

I’d never confuse you with BRRB – he seems a top man and a top Tim to me.

    Hail Hail

I would definitely agree that BRRB is great fun and a Top Tim – and definitely not a Board Placeman.

    Good morning CQN.

    At least I think so.

    8 days to go.

    I think I’ll make it.

  13. The AGM in a week.Who is exactly is down in”. That London”?.None of the managers we are supposed to be interviewing are.Cannot be their agents, they only talk the terms, conditions side.Just WHO is there?.

  14. Big Scales, standing in the centre of the area.Just before the corner is kicked,he pulls out, runs around the back, beyond the post,by the time the ball reaches him,he has been able to see the flight, and has had a run and jump at it.3 times successful last night against a great team.

Never seen it used by us.In fact, never seen any tactic other than, just lump it in.

  15. We will not, repeat, not get Knutsen or Hyal if we don’t get rid of some board members, full stop.

These guys are no mugs be assured, and unless they have FULL authority over players etc, then no chance, imo.

and allowed to bring their backroom staff with them.

We know the board don’t like spending money so there is little chance of them paying out and compo either.

So, where does that leave us exactly. Indashit

    Good shout IMHO.

In fact, at a stretch you could make a case for him being an honorary Chairman …

.. as part of a healing process but also because he is smart enough to perform either role adequately.

    One possible problem though …

He partly fits that pale, male, stale demographic identified by the collective as needing changed at board level.
