The enormous building maintenance costs for Celtic Park

Over the years I’ve gone on about the cost of running a football club the size of Celtic.  Before you start to employ a footballer, coach, or someone to put the cones out at training, you’ll be pushed to spend less than £17m.  If you want to have appropriate resources in place, you’re going to spend more than this.

The club spend a lot of money each year on building maintenance at Celtic Park (have a guess?).  The fabric of the building, plumbing, painting the steps, fixing the locks, ensuring electrics and heating systems are safe, costs a small fortune at a stadium that size.

There is a tendency to think of Celtic Park as ‘new’, but it’s not.  It recently entered its third decade, and like any building that age, with large areas exposed to the elements, it requires a continuous programme of renewal and repair.

Structural damage can happen to any building during a storm, it’s not necessarily a sign the building’s been under-maintained or is otherwise dangerous.  But when parts of the roof hang free over the heads of spectators, as happened at Ibrox last night, lots of things need to be checked.  Starting with the maintenance records.

My preference would be that games are cancelled during high winds.  Better safe than sorry.

Annual building maintenance cost of Celtic Park is £800k (not counting Lennoxtown or the Superstore).  That’s a lot of money to find, if you were scrapping by on emergency loans.

  1. Send the sevconian army in against Daesh….just tell them Daesh are Kaffliks.

And Scott Allan should deffo start:)

  2. I hope Scott Allan starts on Saturday, he won’t get any better sitting on the bench.

The Green Man – if your paramount concern is the Syrian bombing, why are you spending time on a football forum? There are many places on the world wide web where you can discuss the Syrian situation without being rudely interrupted, on a Celtic blog, by talk of who should play for Celtic.

Congratulations on your anniversary and you would have met TD in Vegas

    just being dragged shopping,

but will be in sunny hamilton on Saturday Auchengranite road (spelling))

  5. I am a little naive.

If Is has been getting bombed for a year with smart bombs that can even go up closes, why is there any of them left?

I mentioned the other day that when Callum came off the bench ( I think) a few weeks ago, I immediately noticed a difference in his demeanour. Much more confident. Could we not accommodate bot Scott and Callum?

I think we play with ten up front at Home anyway so Griff as a lone striker on paper would not bother me.

    Forrest McGregor,Armstrong, Allan.

Maybe someone can tell me the last time Syria invaded another country ?

    Around 1948.

  9. Tickets for the Fener match…….

Does anybody have or know off 2 possibly 3 tickets for the match? Thanks in advance!

Calum McGregor – this is why I have a problem with Ronny

Calum was Ronny’s darling 18 months ago played about 10 games in a row when Ronny arrived – he was the future faster fitter etc

Then he completely disappears for a year not in the managers thinking not even sub –

then straight back in the team ????

I have no gripe with McGregor – in fact I have sympathy for him – but how de we explain this

Why has Calum McGregor not featured in a year ????

    I just don’t understand

You have dismissed criticism made by various people on here of the Celtic board on the grounds that they (the CQN posters) haven’t run a business.

    Not me,mate.

  12. 67 European Cup Winners

He went off radar after we brought in Zig & Zag, who both started off reasonably well before going downhill fairly rapidly, Calumn kept his head down, worked hard and won his place back. Big squad players have to fight for their place???

  13. Stringer Bell

    Keep yer hair oan.

Check my post about sending the sevconians against Daesh….which also mentioned Scott Allan, in favour of him starting:)

  14. McGregor missed the last two months of last season with an ankle break. Was on crutches when he collected his championship medal. Played in about 30 games last season, started well then hit a form slump which coincided with the January signings. Decent squad player to have.

Some time ago, I asked about Celtic, Vintage silk scarfs but had no luck. A minute ago, I ordered one of these:

and post the link in case anyone else is interested ( especially the Fife Bhoys). It did say only three were left and I have bought one. Nice wee Christmas present .

PS I realise the above looks like a Sales pitch but I can offer assurance that I am not involved in this deal!!

  16. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

Having checked the link, I see that only two are available now so I think the `3` claim was genuine ( as if a Tim would lie!)

  17. Burgas…,

Which country would that be ?

And it obviously justifies the current action, thanks for that.

  18. Anyone know the latest news on Janko?

JJ, you on the bus on Sat, or are you slumming it with the flouncer?

  19. Canamalar

Shhh we are not allowed to take about the bombing in Syria.

    They will blame me:)

    Scott Allan is more important.

About suffering they were never wrong,

The old Masters: how well they understood

Its human position: how it takes place

    While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;

How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting

For the miraculous birth, there always must be

Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating

On a pond at the edge of the wood:

    They never forgot

That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course

Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot

Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer’s horse

Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

In Breughel’s Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away

Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may

Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,

But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone

As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green

Water, and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen

Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,

Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.”

  22. The Green Man,

It’s awright to talk about Celtic sometimes surely :)

And Scott Allan is quite an important distraction from our impending doom,I’d play him instead of Johansen myself.

  23. The Green Man

How about you try something a wee bit different, you talk about what you want to talk about and let others talk about what they want to talk about, you know like a democratic process…

  24. jeez those israelis will be quaking in their boots as UN resolutions are being acted on ….oh wait.

The hypocrisy of western governments foreign policy geez me the boke!

regimes propped up and supported by us are now the bad guys.we have form(in the west)

maybe we should go after those fundamentalisty type nutters but bombing Riyadh/Saudi wont happen!

we sanction Iran for building nuclear power plants whilst, ssssh,no ssssh, whisper it we build Dimona on the quiet,

gauling,so it is the inhumanity we show to our fellow humans just so each country with its neb in the middle east can repatriate its profits back to shareholders here.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust,DNA into dust, once those technological wonders called missiles, with their orwellian labelled ‘bomblets’ loaded by the thousand in each missile, break out and heat seek for destination, indiscriminate in what it shreds within a certain radius of where the missile is activated.precision my ass.we pay for these missiles, yet another transfer of wealth from the poor to those who have,

  25. Starry Plough

    I don’t care what people talk about….its a blog.

I post an opinion like everyone else.

  26. I agree that Joe Hansen should be dropped. He’s been below par for too long.

Brown will also be leaving a void in midfield and I’m not too sure how fit Charlie is. Maybe Biton & Rogic in the deeper positions and Allan behind Griff?

  27. Starry Plough

I thought my joke about the sevconians being sent to fight Daesh, shows I’m not entirely serious.

    People are touchy today.

  28. An T…,

The sick bit is, we pay for the missiles the wealthy cream the money and deliver the missiles to the poor in other countries in our name.

They are bombing a city and are telling us no civilian casualties, aye like that’s going to happen.

  29. I seen a poll yesterday that 59% of the UK supported bombing of Syria and only 20% against.

Just goes to show you about the silent majority, they don’t want to discuss politics they want blood.
