The exceptional Celtic Movement

900

When this publishes, I should be a few kilometres into the Great Scottish Run.  These events can be humbling.  You see people there with messages on their shirts.  ‘The big C’ gets a lot of mentions, in many of its forms, as does heart disease and conditions most of us will, fortunately, be less familiar with.  Some simply have a loved one’s smiling photograph on their back.  Their former feeling of helplessness matured into purposeful action.

I’m running for Celtic Charity’s 1254125 campaign.  This is not something controlled or even organised by the club, but it is fundamental to what Celtic Football Club is.  The Celtic Movement was called together in a church hall in November 1887 to alleviate the distress of poverty in those unable to feed themselves.  It is different from other clubs because it started differently and has since walked unfamiliar roads.

The spirit to help others has been increasingly self-evident in recent years but I am sure the commitment has become more embedded as a result of 1254125.  It is now part of our routine, what we know to expect from ourselves.

We will only stay different if you and I continue to insist we walk (or run) unfamiliar roads.  We all worry about where our club is going.  There is little we can do about many potential dangers but we can make sure Celtic remains anchored to the spirit which founded it.  You can support 1254125 through the MyDonate page I setup to convince me I shouldn’t give up halfway through this run.  Your support is appreciated.

Yesterday we lost Cllr George Ryan, or St John Doyle, as he was known on these pages.  George touched the lives of hundreds of people but unless you were in direct contact, you would not know what he did for the people of Glasgow, for Celtic supporters in difficulty, or even for the Thai Tims.  He was an exceptional Celtic man who lived the way exceptional Celtic people have ever since that meeting in St Mary’s Hall.

Yes, I see what you are saying, but I’ve carefully posted before I’ll not see ‘the reincarnation’

If I’m viewed as damaging the future Celtic, I’m fully prepared to become a permanent nostalgist.

God save Celtic from Dermot Desmond’s single soundbite, and damn him he’s only a detached majority shareholder, compared to me.

I’m prepared to fight for Celtic, the under 18 Celtic v Rangers signal is enough to make the sabre rattlers uncomfortable already.

If you’re telling me there will be nothing we can do about their return, – I’m devastated.

  7. For what its worth, I believe most of the fans I know who have stopped going to CP now and are missing the Zombies are of a younger generation who latched on during the MON days. Unlike others on here who had to go through the hard and dark times of late 80’s and 90’s, and who have not forgot the euphoria of them Lording it over us. However I have met a few elder Tims who seem to miss them, it baffled me somewhat, I hated that feeling in my gut when we lost to them, worse when it was helped by the MiBs, in the later years I did not even look forward to the fixture.

Sorry Kojo…but I for one won’t go back. My old man took me to the 1956 league cup final and replay against our big Glasgow rivals, partick thistle…that was the year before we humbled out other Glasgow rivals 7-1…so I have served my apprenticeship and paid my dues. Also, and this is important, I no longer feel an affinity with the players. The distance between today’s players and the fans is greater than ever and I am made to feel more and more like a customer by the suits…so, the moment is drawing closer when I will feel ‘that’s it!’ And it will coincide with the arrival of the new team with the old moronic supporters into our league…no thanks!

If I can still afford my ST if and when thems come calling again, I will choose not to attend. As far as thems ground is concerned, have not attended since the disaster. Just my way of thinking. Firmly agree. Being a bit younger wbc, Following Celtic from 1979 until the bad days of 92/93 picking the odd game hear and there and noting the need for change, I like the many others got behind wee Fergus and his plan bought my first season book at Hampden (Putting the cause before my young family and holidays etc), and remaining a SB holder with my son to the present day. I will always look back with pride and being part of the Celtic renaissance when support was needed.

No one will ever make me feel guilty If I decide to withdraw my financial support in a corrupt league, however if we ever have any custodians with enough balls to take on the Establishment, I would be back in a flash.

  25. That team destroyed Scottish Football as a credible competitive entity. Their return will only be the final nail in the coffin for me.

The favour they have been dispensed, by the authorities, by the press, by the police, by the government, by our Scottish politicians, by the armed forces has been nothing short of shameful.

My God, there are fans of the pub team and indeed pundits on the radio and television stating this country needs the pub team back to stop the competition being a one horse race in Celtic’s favour.

This whilst missing the irony that that is exactly what the Govanites did for over a decade. They started the race to the bottom and, also ironically, they won it!

The pub team will be back – amid fanfares and much jocular hilarity from the likes of Young and Johnstone and Dodds and Tanner and McLeod and Walker and especially the tabloid ink smiths.

And some bank will forward them credit and some combine will pencil their name across their chests and some bureaucrats will sanction the stars on their chests and the race to the bottom will begin all over again – captured beatifically in high definition by SKY and BT.

And I feel this to be true because there is nothing, absolutely no proof and nothing to the contrary to prove to me that any of the imagined troubles that should or will befall them ever, ever will.

And will we all feel good within? Bathe in the warm pleasures of the moral compensation that we are the sole good guys in a rigged game?

Rangers played with and got away with breaking the game and setting it to their own needs. They destroyed, in my own, single opinion, and present everyday belief what I thought good about the game.

And maybe more fool me. But what they broke can’t be fixed. And I wouldn’t sully my integrity by being involved in anything that they are involved in.

I’ll be on the outside, but i won’t be looking in either.
