The exceptional Celtic Movement

900

When this publishes, I should be a few kilometres into the Great Scottish Run.  These events can be humbling.  You see people there with messages on their shirts.  ‘The big C’ gets a lot of mentions, in many of its forms, as does heart disease and conditions most of us will, fortunately, be less familiar with.  Some simply have a loved one’s smiling photograph on their back.  Their former feeling of helplessness matured into purposeful action.

I’m running for Celtic Charity’s 1254125 campaign.  This is not something controlled or even organised by the club, but it is fundamental to what Celtic Football Club is.  The Celtic Movement was called together in a church hall in November 1887 to alleviate the distress of poverty in those unable to feed themselves.  It is different from other clubs because it started differently and has since walked unfamiliar roads.

The spirit to help others has been increasingly self-evident in recent years but I am sure the commitment has become more embedded as a result of 1254125.  It is now part of our routine, what we know to expect from ourselves.

We will only stay different if you and I continue to insist we walk (or run) unfamiliar roads.  We all worry about where our club is going.  There is little we can do about many potential dangers but we can make sure Celtic remains anchored to the spirit which founded it.  You can support 1254125 through the MyDonate page I setup to convince me I shouldn’t give up halfway through this run.  Your support is appreciated.

Yesterday we lost Cllr George Ryan, or St John Doyle, as he was known on these pages.  George touched the lives of hundreds of people but unless you were in direct contact, you would not know what he did for the people of Glasgow, for Celtic supporters in difficulty, or even for the Thai Tims.  He was an exceptional Celtic man who lived the way exceptional Celtic people have ever since that meeting in St Mary’s Hall.

I’m ambivalent to the prospect of ever facing a form of Hunco. Be great to slaughter them on the park and ridicule them with some well thought out songs, banners, etc.

    Good reply

I’m a good bit older and I’m on season ticket 32 in a row,*not previously posted or boasted* and only respond to supporters, I’m confident that actually support Celtic.

Maybe I won’t be able to give up the club I love as sftb says it’ll be difficult, but I’ll decide on the basis of how Celtic react to the wishes and aspirations of thousands of Celtic fans past and present, who were cheated.

At best I’ll get a response and reaction I hope for, at worst we’ll get a reaction.

A lifetime of supporting Celtic won’t be altered, I wish Celtic well in how they deal with

    the future.

Yes, there are missing Celtic fans, but I believe most of the gaps are created by fans that have given up because of Sevco, and not because they are missing the club that was liquidated.

Re the games with Rangers ( or whatever) personally I would not want them back and not just for the reasons that Ulysses McGee outlined.

I was probably only at about a dozen matches with them from about 1993 onwards – during which time both teams had at least one spell of total dominance. The atmosphere was horrible- they brought out the worst in so many people in our own support- and if we won going for a celebratory drink was not always a safe idea and the games were often abysmal as actual spectacles of football

I will obviously continue to support Celtic irrespective of whoever we are forced to play. But the games themselves will, for years after they (re) start be even worse than before

Imagine the remote control Celtic supporter trying to tell anyone what they are.

Like every other business if those in charge don’t listen to their clientele they know they are damaging the business, not the other way round as some clowns would have you believe.

Now, as a shareholder and many like me who are completely against the return of any incarnation, are not listened to the same applies, it’s simply wrong to ride roughshod over the wishes of the clientele and shareholders and those who are contemplating such an idea will be fully responsible for any damage done to the club.

  12. Margaret McGill on

If all Celtic supporters thought in 1993 the way Kojo thinks 20 years on there would be no Fergus. No Celtic.

I am not suggesting its that bad today, however, this is a once in a lifetime chance to force the Scottish football authorities to remove the hun legacy and cancel their legitimacy and have Celtic thrive more on a European platform rather than “what are the huns daein?” mentality that I believe this bored are prone. They are NOT dead. THEMS need to be dead. I hear rumours that their financial cancer is not in remission and that they are eating themselves out of existence again.

I will believe that when I see it.

15:56 on 6 October, 2013For what its worth, I believe most of the fans I know who have stopped going to CP now and are missing the Zombies are of a younger generation who latched on during the MON days. Unlike others on here who had to go through the hard and dark times of late 80′s and 90′s, and who have not forgot the euphoria of them Lording it over us. However I have met a few elder Tims who seem to miss them, it baffled me somewhat, I hated that feeling in my gut when we lost to them, worse when it was helped by the MiBs, in the later years I did not even look forward to the fixture.

    100%

  16. Anyways…. on to more sensible arguments.

I read two proposals to deal with our alleged failures in youth development, namely that:-

    1) we should scrap our youth system and just buy the best products developed by Hibs and Dundee United etc;

    or

    2) We should scrap our set up and send all our best youth prospects over to Barca (or Ajax) to be trained because they do it better there.

These suggestions seem initially sensible but it only takes a minute’s reflection to see deep rooted flaws in both.

    If we close our development set up and seek to cherry pick from others, what do we do when they follow our example? For the same reasons that we lost Islam Feruz to inadequate compensation, so United and Hibs and Aberdeen have been inadequately compensated for the loss of Grimmer, Fraser, Goodwillie, Russell etc;

Posters like TBB and BRT & H have told us that these clubs are concerned as to whether their youth set ups are commercially viable. If we steal Gauld or Souttar from United, or Cammy Smith, Ryan Jack or Joe Shaugnessy from the Dons, or Alex Harris from Hibs for less than they are worth, how long will the development squads of these clubs last? Will they not look to follow our example and scrap the apprenticeship schemes looking to steal promising young players from Div. 1 to 3 clubs instead. And so, the knock on effect will lead to mutual cutting off of noses and lots of spiteful faces.

Similarly, transferring our young squad to Barcelona would place them in a more hothouse atmosphere where they would be forced to compete with better prospects. But there are two obvious problems to this simplistic solution:-

    a) What is in it for Barca to dilute their talent standard levels to accommodate lesser players from lesser clubs? and

    b) What is to stop them from doing a Chelsea and stealing the best of our youth prospects as they see, at close quarters, who is developing best.

I am afraid, that there is only one solution to square this wee circle of problems which we have and that is to have a more realistic value put on youth development costs, and top talent, in particular.

At the moment, there is a severe conflict between a desire to promote talent development and the rewards available for doing this successfully. As a result of our attempts to get away from the contractual slavery issues of Jim McLean type 8 year youth contracts, we have made youth development an uneconomic field of activity.

A more sensible formula is needed to allow clubs to, at least, recoup their development costs for the player sold, plus an additional value that reflects the high churn and failure rate of such set ups.

Having a youth training camp reciprocal arrangement with a big Continental club might then be helpful to get an “Andy Murray at the Sanchez-Casal Academy” effect without the danger of Andy Murray competing for Spain or a Spanish club.

  21. Thinking back to game yesterday.

Anyone else think it significant that Kayal and Rogic never got on?

When Adam got injured there was an opportunity to bring on Kayal, and similar, when izzy came off.

Equally significant when Izzy came off and when Pukki came off, in both cases it could have been Rogic who got the nod, instead it was Biton.

I am not quite sure what has happened to Kayal, I know he was still troubled by his ankle at end of last season, but it would be great to get him back to his best.

As for Rogic, looks a decent build for a footballer, but his fitness (IMHO) is lacking, he is one footed, and sadly whenever he plays, statistically, we are more likely to drop the game.

I wonder if he really is an offensive midfielder?

Maybe left back or holding mid might be more appropriate?

  22. Two years ago if somebody said to you that the Govan company/club would be liquidated and that a pheonix version would be made to again start on the bottom rung of the SFL, how many of us would NOT have rushed to sign on the dotted line?

This is Scotland, they were the establishment’s club/team.

This is as good as it gets for us, and we have every right to enjoy it (for reasons too numerous to mention…).

If the pheonix version ever make it up to the top level in Scottissh football, I think they will have more to worry about than we have.

The gulf in resources by that time should vrtually guarantee some serious spankings for them.

Their ambition will be (à la Motherwell or Aberdeen) to get into the lesser European tournament – once they are eligible.

That is assuming that the football landscape hasn’t changed by then, and that we won’t have moved off to new green pastures.

    Here’s hoping.

Anyway, some great points today about what we do should we ever be forced to play the Ibrox Mob. Personally, in the event that it ever happens (and we might only be a few months away from it being impossible!) my decision will depend entirely on the actions of our own Club. Any suggestion that it’s a return to the old firm, that it’s our first match for 3 years, or that we treat them in any way different to any other Scottish club (e.g ticket prices or ticket allocations, etc) then I’ll be spending my weekends golfing. Or running ;-)
