The FA doing societies hard work

152

Social media is a window into society, into families and into the heads of those (including you and me) who engage with it. You and me are OK, obviously, but out there, it’s a minefield. Think, for a second, about the adults who go online to brand themselves by expressing racist abuse at a footballer.
That’s bad enough, but think about one of the sports governing bodies presenting an evidence pack to the police, only for the police to tell them they don’t have the money to do anything with those responsible for such a desperate self-own,
Ahead of the EUros, The Football Association have funded the police to pursue criminals who indulge in racist behaviour online, because society apparently has other priorities. A spokesperson for the FA said, ““We obviously talk to the players about [racist abuse]all the time and now we are doing things differently.
“In the past what we did was put together all the data, effectively an evidence pack, to give to the police to prosecute. But this time we have gone a stage further where we are actually funding a unit within the British police that will then prosecute.”
Four years ago, the Euros concluded with two black English players on the receiving end of racist abuse, the like of which less prominent people of colour endure on a regular basis.
The perpetrators are doing the equivalent of sending The Bat Signal into the clouds, identifying as a absolute one for the watching. This will not be their only misdemeanour, you can be sure.
Football picks up the reputational tab for societies nutcases, because football provides a cover where they can emerge from the shadows, but be sure, this is not a football problem, this is a social and criminal justice problem. The FA deserve credit from all of us who value the game and its reputation.

  1. Good morning from a bright North Staffs

    Professor Iain Stewart made a terrific documentary on Maxwell nearly ten years back;

‘Scotland’s Einstein: The Man who changed the World’, still available on U Tube. Also got an honourable mention in terrific a lecture/documentary ‘The Science of Doctor Who’ given at the Royal Institution ten or so years ago, by Brian Cox. where both Faraday and Maxwell had also given demonstrations in front of their Peers. Maxwell’s theories on electromagnetism (and light) (not to mention the maths) are as incredible today as then, and the basis for radio, television, mobile phone etc etc. Also created the first colour photograph in front of a live audience.

Friend of Faraday’s in London, and died relatively young in 1879, the same year Einstein was born.

Dont know if there has ever been a film based around his life as per Baird, Turin, Oppenheimer, Hawkin, Nash et al and amazingly relatively unknown in his Scottish homeland.

Newton – Maxwell – Einstein take us all the way to 1955, with many great Scientists, Mathematicians and Inventors in between. A bone fide genius of the highest order.

  3. so what have i learned overnight.

well the celtic double was won even with a spiteful board in place,

    dearie me

I hope the tartan army have cleaned up after the party in Munich. Is there any chance that the Record is scouring the streets taking pics of all the litter and interviewing terrified business owners in the area?

  5. Paul

Was thinking much the same – the difference is of course that the governors and businesses in Munich are set up to WELCOME and cater for the influx of fans – compare and contrast with Glasgow.

  6. before a ball is kicked,

    or a player signed

    or even the fixtures released,

and with a scrooge like board in place

with the current squad and management.

I will make a prediction now,

Celtic will win the next league.

not with hope in my heart, not because i have faith in the manager and set up,

but simply because it is what we are set up to do.

regardless of whatever alternative view is held by internet angus ogs.

CELTIC AS OF NOW, WILL WIN THE LEAGUE.

    Reading back.

Still Celtic supporters moaning that we only just scraped the league and were lucky to win the cup because we won a penalty shoot-out and didn’t score in the final until the 90th minute, all because of the board.

We won the Eurooean Cup only after a 90th minute winner in the quarter finals and in the final we didn’t score the winner until last 5 minutes.

they died that long ago blue tie mckay still had hair.

  9. aye Tom, fitba, sport, competition, what is it like eh, the other mob trying to stop you winning, celtic should be better than that, if only we spent the money on better players,

i blame the board myself, evidenced by todays inactivity, 09:12 am, window opened for 12 mins and not a registration at hampden park made yet.

  10. Tom McLaughlin on

It’s been a long time coming.

Come on Scotland. Do us proud. I think we will get into the last 16, even if it’s one of the 4 third place qualifiers.

As for tonight, I’d take a draw now.

Good luck to the 4 Celts over there. 🍀

  11. As a Celtic and Scottish sport fan things have rarely been better in my living memory …..

Celtic are enjoying as dominant a position as almost any other team in Europe domestically. 5 Trebles and 19 trophies out of the past 24 competed for domestically. We sit on the cusp of a newly structured CL which will give us at least 8 games to go to against different top European teams. We only played 9 in the 2 times we reached the final ! The new format maybe a game changer for us.

This weekend we have Glasgow Warriors with a tiny bit more than a punchers chance of reaching the final of the United rugby championship when they travel to Munster. A first in the new format if they get there.

This weekend we have Bob McIntyre sitting nicely in the US Open. In with a real chance given his form. Maybe the Open at Troon might be his big opportunity though.

This weekend we have an outside chance of reaching the last 8 and knocking out holders England at the cricket in the T20.

This next week in football Scotland will be doing their all to reach the knockout stages in a tough group in the euros. They have earned that right. I really hope they can do it.

And we have Josh Kerr and others in with a real shout of golf at the olympics in the blue ribbon even 1500 metres next month too.

And we might be rid of the tories.

    Great times to enjoy.

Right off for a cycle and then a bit of work.

  12. Looks like Celtic FC Women are getting their signings in early doors.

Judging from his recent leaders Paul67 will be having panic attacks

    Over sustainability and such like.

I see we’ve signed a couple of Danish twins, 22 year-old Signe and Mathilde Carstens for the women’s team.

  15. Really hate fans calling players who are now being given the chance to leave”Duds”.Leave that to the media. Both CHs signed, are anything but.Already clubs in for them.Defy anyone who watched Nawrocki play,to tell me was a ” Did”.Lagerbielke played the first 5 games of the season, virtually having stepped off a plane,2 home games,3 away,we never lost one, including a clean sheet at Ibrox.Swedish International. Some ” Dud”.

Holm,BR has already said, has a great future ahead.Palma, terrific signing, who,if it was not for Maeda, would have at least have equalled Jota’s quota of goals, assists.CL goals as well.Oh we are about to make a lovely profit on.The other 2,we will see.BR,for his own reasons, did not fancy the 2 CHs,that’s his choice, other managers do.

Time now for BR to produce the quality players he said we needed..They will be his choices.

  16. A composite settlement of £56m was agreed with HMRC, which reflected the outcome of the Supreme

Court decision in 2017, and can be summarised as follows:

    £’000

    EBT/ IHT ` 41,648

    Small tax claims 4,079

    Craig Whyte era 10,273

    56,000

  17. In regards to Idah’s fee ….if we are interested.

Really like him but don’t think he’s had enough game time…. just wondering how much any of us would be willing to pay for him ?

    Me… I think £ 5m plus add ons….think anything over £6 m is too much …yet again I am a tight Jock ! 🤪🤣

  18. in todays markey values £4-5m gets you an Oh.

£5-6m for an Idah is not unimaginable, or indeed over the odds.

pay it if we want him.

he got enough goals, and minutes to prove himself as being a contender.

then again, he might want a shot at the EPL. or someone else might pay twice as much to get him.

  19. Stivs

Just wondering how many people would question how much we offered without be classed as being usual Celtic, being too tight to pay market value…..

It’s a difficult market but every player has a price , will be interesting ?

  20. As a youngster I was Scotland mad. Heroes like Dennis Law and Dave McKay ranked alongside Paddy Crerand, Jinky and Bobby Murdoch. Vividly remember the 9-3 thrashing and thinking the world would end.

Tonight Scotland are playing whilst self and Mrs S are flying to Krakow, and I’m not really bothered. I know I’ll get a bit excited about CalMac, Tony, Greg and maybe the other ex-Celts but not really feeling it.

That said, maybe it’s the Krakow effect. We haven’t been back since the pandemic and missing it badly.

Anyway, Best of Luck to the Bravehearts!

  21. before the tournament starts.

anyone got any plaers they think are in celtic recruitment criteria we should go and sign?

James Clerk Maxwell was up there with Einstein. Am looking forward starting to Year 3 Physics at Glasgow uni this September where Maxwells equations will be studied in depth. (As a very very mature student) My interest in physics clue is in my moniker!)
