The fight against a disease which takes young and old goes on

238

It is the indiscriminate nature of life that can shock us the most. Liam Miller, 36, is critically ill with that most feared of diseases, which has taken so many in our families, and our own CQN community. Legend has it that Sir Alex Ferguson came to Celtic Park to watch 17-year-old Vincent Kompany, but was blown away by Miller, who got on the end of an incredible move to score, as Celtic humbled Anderlecht in the Champions League.

This may or may not be true, I suspect Ferguson knew about Miller before travelling north, but the player’s potential was irresistible, either way. He was the brightest graduate of the Celtic youth system since Paul McStay – delivering on the same level Kieran Tierney is now.

Ferguson offered a contract five time more lucrative than Celtic and Liam was off to Manchester, as Celtic fans bemoaned the apparent futility of a development system that took years between producing players of quality, only for them to leave after delivering for a few months.

For Liam, that was the high water mark, he never against reached those levels. Let’s hope he wins his fight against a disease which takes young and old, often as a consequence of a genetic lottery. Decades of fundraising and education (including by many on here) have made a real impact on survival rates, but much still needs to be done. And for goodness sake, don’t sacrifice your life for the tobacco industry.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT NOW!

  2. Michael Stewart swatting away Boyd, Young and McIntyre , even with stats they argue about the huns being the reason attendances went up 2012- 2015…not true

  3. Boyd and Young struggling with basic arithmetic. They don’t appear to understand averages. Michael Stewart battering his head off a brick wall trying to explain.

Snap again. Funny listening to two idiots trying to argue Black is white. They should ask Boyd how his EBT worked, his head would explode

  6. Michael Stewart has my sympathy trying to educate someone like Kris Boyd whose thought process begins with the Gers , and ends with the Gers . Nothing else is relevant in his narrow mindset.

Did you get my mail this morning about Robert Burns?

  8. Chiellini with blatant elbow does not get second yellow despite ref having clear view.

2 penalty decisions not given, one for each team when both could have been.

This ref is under tremendous pressure.

  9. Another penalty not given but could have been.

    This time Sweden.

Sweden could have had two and Italy one.

Robert Kelly was spot on about tv ruining football.

All sports that are televised understand how viewing figures effect price.

The Thierry Henry hand ball and subsequent bribe to Irish authorities showed that perfectly.

Here in the USA it becomes abundantly clear towards playoff times.

If you look at Celtic in Europe we seem to have been the victims of a number of poor decisions against teams from large population countries. 5 1/2 million does not give us much collateral.

The bigger tv market teams get lucky with decisions.

The only danger to Italy not qualifying is their own ability as a team.

  11. Wtf is it with the adverts?

Can only see half the screen on an iPad. Pointless trying to read.

“The only danger to Italy not qualifying is their own ability as a team.”

Nail on the head, the game is brutal, neither of them deserve to qualify.

Money is the reason the huns are still the huns, how sad that in this day and age it’s worse than it’s ever been.

  14. Moussa’s third goal, who does he think he is – Scott Sinclair?

At his second, when he runs away and lunges over the piles of snow, anybody else thinking ‘Yer hamstrings, son, mind yer hamstrings!’

  15. Another good shout for penalty ignored for Italy this time.

This ref has a horrible job today but so far being even with decisions.

  16. Hello again all you young rebels.

Hope all you hooteneers have finally sobered up, it’s our

turn over here in a very hot Oz as our big Celtic day

arrives this Sunday again, our new venue upstairs in the

old Bay Hotel now called The Publican has been getting a

final touch up for our special day so i hope to see a few

    new faces.

Our main entertainment the huge rebel Richie Mckay has

just been blessed with a newborn son so i’m guessing the

singing will be a bit louder than usual as a new bhoy joins

the Celtic family, a big welcome to Hunter McKay.

Like everyone else i’m saddened by the news of Liam Miller

when i first saw him i thought ” this bhoy will be the

mainstay of Celtic for the next few years ” alas not to be.

Thoughts and prayers for him and his family.
